From the Files of Anaheim Gazette

February 1878
A band of young cattle was driven through town yesterday afternoon.
Our merchants complain that there are no potatoes to be had.
The Fairview Sunday school has been reorganized and Mr. Simon B. Smith is now superintendent, and Mr. Edward Evey is his assistant. Irwin Kellogg is librarian, Miss Emma Clark, organist and Mr. Frank P. Marsh is secretary. Last year's total attendance was 1250 for the year
An average of 24 pupils each Sabbath. There is a balance of $12 in the treasury.
A gentleman passing along Los Angeles street on Monday found a half dollar near the Gazette office. We have repeatedly warned our devil to be more careful about the sweepings, as we have no doubt that large quantities of $20 gold pieces and half-dollars are daily wasted in that manner.

W. J. Hole was in town from La Habra on Saturday driving with Jake Stern of Fullerton. Mr. Hole said he had sold 69,000 acres of land in La Habra valley for the Stearns, rancho this year. He also sold 1000 acres of his own land. He has secured a 120-foot right-of-way through the valley for the Huntington electric railway, which he said would build through the Placentia country.

Orange County Citrus Growers Meet at AUHS
The annual Orange county Citrus Institute will be held at Anaheim Union High school, with both morning and afternoon sessions, next Friday.
Sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, the institute will be presided over by J. J. Coony, the new county director of the Agriculture Extension service.
In the first session, new improvements in the growth of citrus crops will be discussed by A. M. Boyce, director of the Citrus Experiment station, Clem Meith and J. C. Johnston, citrus specialists from the University of California; and Roy Smith, agriculture economist at UCLA.
In the afternoon, methods of increasing income from citrus crops and the future of the citrus industry will be developed by A. G. Salter, Sunkist; Thomas Eadington, Fullerton; E. A. Beavens, U.S.D.A. research laboratory, and a panel of citrus growers.
U. S. Savings Bonds Pass $250,000 In Orange County
Sales of U.S. Savings Bonds in Orange county during January passed the quarter-million-dollar mark, with Series E Bond purchases amounting to $255,310.46, Harry L. Hanson, Defense Bond committee chairman for the county announced today.

INSPIRATIONAL — Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.—Matt. 6:12.
COST OF LIVING — Anaheimers are eating a little better than they have. Meat prices have dropped enough to bring a steak within the range of the average household's budget. But as the upward spiral of price is temporarily halted and the law of supply and demand takes hold, certain legislators began to sound off. It doesn't make sense. Everything in this modern economy is subsidized except the family budget. Most any Anaheim housewife can tell you that she's had to economize in times of plenty. Now, that the more expensive meat cuts are within her price range, the headline grabbing senators and congressmen want to put on the old squeeze. Gasoline prices went up another cent or two just the other day, but there weren't the legislative squawks about that. Taxes—hidden and otherwise—were primarily responsible. There are a lot of theories on economics, but those artificies that keep up prices don't benefit the average Anaheimer.
SIDELINES — Anaheim's Senator, Tommy Kuchel, made himself a lot more friends during his Lincoln week talkfest to California. Clyde Nickel is in there pitching for the Anaheim YMCA fund membership campaign. Earnie Moeller is considered the "most successful promoter of Anaheim" by Buena Park's Paul Kroesen, who didn't do so badly himself in promoting his home town. Tom Quayle has really become a civic booster since joining Anaheim industrial forces. It is through unselfish cooperation that a city is built... Herschel Wilton and Don Wright are small fry Anaheimers who have that certain something that will put them over the top.
PASSING — Cecil Blasingame. The president of the Fullerton Izank Waltons spends a lot of time in Anaheim's environs. He's an estimator for the Edison company and handles assignments throughout the county... Milford Mauerhan is one of Anaheim's most beloved teachers. Her pupils say so... Dick Dusteroff is another highly efficient young man. He is the fellow who gets results... Kenyon K. Kohne. The Anaheimer was one of 19 to receive Santa Claus college midterm.
Mrs. George Boyd spent several days in Los Angeles this week visiting relatives.

They will return on Sunday afternoon.
Vending Machines Double 6 yr. Take
NEW YORK OP—Those coins dropped into vending machines for cigarettes, candy, and such added up to 1¼ billion dollars last year—just about double the total of six years ago, an industry leader said Tuesday.
Robert Z. Greene, president of the Row Corp., the nation's largest maker and operator of automatic vending machines, told the sales executives club of New York it took some 2,750,000 vending machines, making 19 billion individual sales, to reach last year's volume.

PASSING — Cecil Blasingame. The president of the Fullerton Izaak Waltons spends a lot of time in Anaheim's environs. He's an estimator for the Edison company and handles assignments throughout the county. Milfred Mauerhan is one of Anaheim's most beloved teachers. Her pupils say so... Dick Dusteroff is another highly efficient young man. He is the fellow who gets results... Kenyon K. Kohne. The Anaheim was one of 19 to receive Santa Ana college mid-term diplomas. Congratulations! Martin Morrero, principal of the Katella school, has to work to keep pace with the additional enrollment. It's rough to keep from half-sessions, as builders can't build classrooms fast enough.
CONSISTENT — Clyde Beatty's circus won't be holding a one-day show in Anaheim this year. The permit was denied. That's in keeping with the zoning regulations. Last fall a revival meeting was denied on similar grounds. Robert Merrick, vice president of the Fluor Corp., made a hurry-up 23,000 mile tour around the world. He has something to talk about... Jack Painter of Brea has developed a rocking bed for polio patients. That reminds us of the hospital bed a former Anaheimer, Logan Burkart, invented. It was complete with push-button controls, but didn't go over as hospitals seem to prefer the manually operated kind... Joseph Webber is put out. His bill fold was lifted while he was working on the Anaheim-Fullerton municipal court building. Some day you may read about a judge having his pocket picked while sentencing a pickpocket. Won't that be something?
