"I think this shows we mean business," Police Chief Michael Gaffey said after the squad led by Sgt. John J. Curran, Jr. swept through the night spots in the downtown tenderloin district. The arrests were made in the five bars. Charges ranged from selling liquor to minors, selling after hours, drunkenness and vagrancy. A few weeks ago the State Board of Equalization brought in agents from Sacramento and raided some taverns suspected of after hours liquor sales. The local police were not let in on these raids. There were no Board of Equalization agents with the police squad in its Friday night's whirlwind action, which kept patrol wagons busy until 4 a.m. carting arrested persons to jail. The special raiding squad was formed without even general knowledge of it within the department. Gaffey said he decided to organize it after talking the taven situation over with Dist. Atty Thomas C. Lynch, and a mutual agreement that a number of the places should be checked. SF Gas Stations Raise Prices SAN FRANCISCO GP—Nine-times per cent of the independent gasoline dealers here have less than 1 gas price 1 to 12 cents a gallon and another round of boosts is in prospect, an official of the San Francisco Petroleum Retailers association said Saturday. It E. Prumbe, executive secretary of the association, which counts a majority of the city's independent operators, said retailers would jump prices again if oil companies raise wholesale prices. A spokesman for Standard Oil Co. of California disclosed his firm would increase its gas prices, but added exact amount had not yet been determined. Flumbe said Standard's action on wholesale prices is generally followed by the industry as a whole. The initial boosts following removal of price ceilings Thursday, caused retail prices in most San Francisco stations to 27 cents for regular gas and 29.5 for premium fluoride, who said independents operate more than 85 per cent of the gas stations here, declared "90 percent" already have raised prices and other bay area councils. McCarthy (R-Wis.) said Saturday night that a state department security agent who testified before his committee last week had been transferred to "a beat." McCarthy identified the agent as John E. Matson, who testified during an appearance before the committee about the disappearance of documents from secret state department files. The senator said Matson had been assigned "to doorbell pushing and beating the street in investigations after testifying before the senate committee." McCarthy said Matson's transfer "appears on the surface to be a case of reprisal or intimidation" against a witness of the senate investigation committee. The Wisconsin senator announced his committee would hold a public hearing on Matson's transfer. Matson confirmed in Washington that he had been transferred.
