HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago February 1878 The people of Prescott, Ariz., complain that water was never so scarce in Yavapai county as it is at the present time. All over the western part of the county the sign "No water for horses" is seen on the wells at John Dickson's at Scull Valley, water is worth five cents a bucketful and is scarce at that. Judge Sepulveda and Judge McNealy of San Diego, will swap judicial benches next week while some cases are on trial in the San Diego court in which Judge McNealy is disqualified to sit. 50 Years Ago February 1903 Frank Stone came up from El Toro last Saturday. He is engaged with the Santa Fe bridge gang which is at work putting up a new bridge at that point. While at San Bernardino some weeks ago during the strike he saw 65 dead engines on the Santa Fe track. 25 Years Ago February 1928 In the winter of 1861-62, which marked the time of the greatest flood that ever swept over this valley, the precipitation amounted to 49.27 inches. Water stood many feet deep from the foothills to the ocean for many days. Judge Pleasants of Santiago, recently informed us that he recollected the flood perfectly. That winter he lived in this city at the time. The family domicle was swept away by raging torrents and its four members waded about in the flood breast deep, with two children in arms, looking for a place of safety. They made their way to the Werder place on South Citrop street where they were barricaded in with members of the family. Rising waters drove them from their refuge and they proceeded east to Los Angeles street, returning north to the center of the city near the point whence they first started, which seemed to be about the highest ground in town. If there are any other persons living who were here at that time we shall be very happy to hear from them. (The writer of this item was Henry Kuchel former editor of the Gazette. Mr. Kuchel was about two years of age at the time. Their home, which was destroyed by the flood was on the north east corner of Center and Los Angeles streets, their vineyard extending to Olive on the East and Chartres on the north. The town was almost completely washed away—Editor). 25 Years Ago February 1928 In the winter of 1861-62, which marked the time of the greatest flood that ever swept over this time.
