Recreation Dept. Director's Report Shows Varied Activities The report of January activities in the Anaheim City Recreation department, released yesterday by Director Don Derr, disclosed a large number of local youngsters taking advantage of varied activities offered by the department. The report follows: The department's activities took a strong up-surge during January. An attendance total of 9503 the highest participation yet achieved during a winter month was recorded. The Social Dancing classes held at Fremont school Tuesday evenings for 7th graders, Thursday evening at a Katella school for students from Katella, Magnolia, Centralia and Loara, attracted over 300 youngsters for instruction once a week. The classes are sponsored by various P-TA groups and conducted by Recreation department personnel. The social graces as well as ballroom dance steps are taught. This program has met with wide approval through the Anaheim Union High school district and is one of the department's most successful activities. Highlight of the month's activity was the Roamer Girls vs Ballman basketball game which played to a crowd of 500 people who contributed to the Northern Orange County Boy Scout Jamboree fund. Basketball on the playgrounds and at the high school saw 28 Anaheim terms taking part in six leagues and one tournament. The leagues involved 85 youngsters in the 5th and 6th grades, 193 adults in the Anaheim City, Industrial and Church leagues. Eight Anaheim men make up the County league and 20 Anaheim junior high school youth are taking part in a junior high school basketball tournament in Santa Ana. The department, is cooperating with the Kwikset Recreation club in its organization of a rifle club. This group meets twice a week, day shift on Wednesday nights, and night shift on Tuesday mornings on the police range. Instruction is supplied by Mrs. Corra Watters, the marksmanship specialist for the department. The Kwikset club reimburses the department for Mrs. Watters time. The Junior Rifle club as well as the Tennis club held weekly practice sessions during the month. Eleven groups used the high school gym during the month under the supervision of the department and four groups reserved the swimming pool. Special activities rounding out the month's activities were finals and presentation of awards in the free-throw tournament and the finals in the Christmas vacation basketball league held in Fremont gym. The director appeared before four groups during the month to give interpretive talks about the Anaheim Recreation program. CARE Asks More Help for East German Refugees Food and blanket packages to help in the emergency created by the flight of thousands of East Germans into the free western area have been dispatched by CARE, the non-profit relief agency, according to an announcement made today by O.G. Thomason, local CARE chairman. CARE has directed its German mission chief to distribute these packages immediately to centers sheltering escapees," Mr. Thomason said. "The first delivery was made possible by an anonymous donor's thousand dollar gift launching CARE's drive to rush aid from the American people to German agencies unable to handle the increasingly serious situation alone." CARE packages stockpiled in western Germany ensure swift delivery of help at all points needed. Mr. Thomason appealed for public support as a demonstration of American willingness to aid victims of disaster wherever it strikes. He said $10 sent to CARE will deliver 21 pounds of food to an escape center. Contribution, an insurance amount will be pooled to provide delivery of fuel packages. The new Carl Harvey school just completed at a cost of $113,862.50 was formally accepted by the board yesterday, and will be occupied as soon as possible for the instruction of cerebral palsy students from all sections of Orange county. The school, containing four large therapy rooms, including physical and vocational, was financed partly by state funds. It was announced at the board meeting that Dr. George Butler, director of health for the school system, will return to duty March 1 after two years' military leave during which he served in Korea His replacements, Dr. Helen E. Robertson and Dr. Thomas G. Goven, will terminate their services on his return. Trial of Local Man Begins Trial began following selection of the jury yesterday in the case of Carl Oscar Peterson, of the Valencia hotel, who was arrested on a drunk driving charge Jan 14. Peterson, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was represented by Lloyd Verry, of Fullerton while the people were represented by City Attorney Preston Turner.
