Both Adult and Youngster Fans of Potter’s Show Protest Time Change
BY TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—For the benefit of TV station owners all over the country, a perfect example of TV viewer protest against a program change is being discussed. I had no intention of getting into this fracas, until phone, letter and personal requests seemed to force the issue. It appears that the majority of viewers of the Peter Potter “Juke Box Jury” which used to be presented over the CBS owned television station, KNXT, here, on a Saturday night, object to its-being replaced by what they call “International Wrestling” on the same hour, moving Potter to Sunday.
“Juke Box Jury” “was” very popular among the teen-agers, which means that the station had a good audience during this show. Few homes sport two TV sets so consequently, mom and dad, who are the buyers of products, also became lookers, whether they liked it or not (ED NOTE: Most adults like the show too). It takes an audience to build a TV station, and it takes buyers to maintain it. Furthermore, it takes a good program vehicle to create both. Pete had it while he could present his show on a non-school night. Now, he hasn’t!
I would like to quote a part of a letter sent in by a reader: "A good, clean, youth-uplifting TV program under the guidance of Peter Potter—known as ‘Juke Box Jury’—has been pushed off the desirable viewing time of temperate homemakers and school students by a co-called ‘International Wrestling’ program I enjoy some of these staged wrestling matches, but this ‘international deal is out.’ Signed, B.L."
Jim Aubrey, manager of the station, explained the move as “strictly financial” with more revenue coming into the station’s coffers from wrestling than from the Potter stint. “I'm not the kind—a medium enjoyed in the sanctuary of their own living rooms by millions. Programming should therefore be carefully planned, and the pulse of the public considered.
RAMBLING AROUND... I ran into my friends, “Smillin’ Ed” Tabor and Bill Jay, who told me that they now have a brand new lodge at San Jose Del Cabo, deep in Baja California, Mexico. This is another of the additions to the “Flying Sportsman Club” of Hollywood. They evidently know what they're saying when they unconditionally guarantee marlin hookup—and I'm going to make them prove it to me sometime soon.
A brand new tune with a Western air by Virgil Thorpe will be getting its TV debut on the Spade Cooley show this week-end. It's an “up tune,” very bright and bouncy... Have been requested to tell why Walter O'Keefe is off the air. It was explained this way: When the sponsor decided to put the show on television, it was moved to New York with Bert Parks selected as emcee Then, for economy reasons. Parks was asked to do a three-day simulcast (combining radio-television at the same time) making it necessary to do only two additional radio shows per week to fill out the stripper.
TELE-TIPS... The desert playground of Las Vegas will be visited on “The Open Road” tonight at 7:30 from KTTV (11)... Elizabeth starts an ostrich farm in the back yard during “Life With Elizabeth” starring Academy winner Betty White, over KLAC (13) at 7:30... The case of a young man found clutching the body of an older woman baffles the law during “Dragnet.” tonight at 9 from KNBH (4)
Washington Reports
By Congressman
JAMES B. UTT
During a conversation with a man on the street here a few days ago, he said, "All those people who were going around with 'I Lake like' pins on will be hunting for some other message to carry after this." He was speaking of the axe wielding which the President promised The Charlotte, North Carolina "Observer" summed up my views on this matter by saying "The best way to clean up the mess in Washington will be to make a clean break with the past President Eisenhower's first message to Congress makes such a break with a cleavage as sharp as if it had been made with the surgeon's knife."
Let's take a little diversionary excursion into some interesting California history and some facts about the seat of our State government.
It may come as a surprise to some of us to realize that the City of Monterey, located on beautiful Monterey Bay, played such a leading role in the official life of the State of California.
From 1781 until 1846, with the exception of a few years, Monterey was the seat of government for Alta California under both Spanish and Mexican rule. It was the military capital of Upper California under American control from 1946 until 1849.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Constitution Drafted There
Monterey was the meeting place for the delegates who drafted the Constitution of 1849. In spite of this rich background of association with the development of California Monterey never played host to the newly formed legislature of 1850. The City of San Jose, the first incorporated city of California, had the honor of the presence of the First and Second sessions of the Legislature, in 1850 and 1851. In 1852 they met in Vallejo and in 1853 in Benicia. In 1854 they moved from Benicia to Sacramento designating that city as the permanent seat of the State government.
Even then there was no Capitol building in which to meet and it was not until 1874 that the present Capitol with its dome was completed. 14 years after the laying of the cornerstone.
This original Capitol building is four stories in height, and of Roman Corinthian design, surmounted by the huge green dome. This dome is of copper-covered wooden sheathing painted green. At the apex is a cupola with a small domed roof covered with gold leaf. The crowning ornament is a 30-inch brass ball plated with gold coins valued at $300.
Traveling to the Stake Capitol now, one wonders how the executive and legislative branches of the government could possibly have functioned in the cramped quarters of that original building which has been augmented by the recently completed Capitol Annex.
This annex is joined to the eastern face of the original building, and has six floors, though only the same height as the 4 floors of the old building. Constructed in about three years, it embodies many of the latest features of modern building construction, and is truly a credit to the State of California and a monument to government and the people that should stand for many generations to come.
Approves Repudiation
While there are many points in the President's message with which I cannot agree, I am pleased with his proposed request that Congress renounce the secret agreement made at Yalta which has proved so embarrassing to the United States.
His reference to the 7th Fleet having been an Arm of the Chinese Communists who are fighting us, was a rude awakening to some of those misguided gentry who contended that the Chinese Communists were gentle agrarian reformers, and I am glad that the 7th Fleet has been withdrawn so that pressure by the Chinese Nationalists can be effected. This should ease the pressure in Korea if this is followed by an effective blockade of Communist China, we will then be going at the matter at hand with some hope of successful conclusion to the bitter conflict. I am certain that these measures will not expand the war.
Legislation
The present activity of the Ways and Means committee is confined to a subcommittee investigation of the alcohol tax administration. While the amounts involved are much less than those revealed in the investigation of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the exposure of graft, evasion, and mal-administration will prove just as spectacular. Watch your newspapers for accounts along this line.
There will not be a general revision of the Internal Revenue law this year, but rather legislation to plug loop-holes, clarify certain sections from an administrative standpoint, and make some reduction in rates. At this point, let me say that I do not agree with the administration's position that appropriations must first be cut and then taxes. I hold to the doctrine that we should cut the tax first and then make the Appropriation committee tailor the expenditures to fit. If there is no shortage of funds, there is no incentive to cut expenses.
