Mickey Rooney Named as 'Acquaintance' Of Call Girl Pat Ward in Jelke Trial NEW YORK UP—Mickey Rooney's name popped up Wednesday from the purple past of call girl Pat Ward, but the pint-sized movie star said "We were never alone." Miss Ward, a copper-haired 19-year-old, is star witness at the cafe society procuring trial of Minot Mickey Jelke, who isn't much taller than Rooney. Also mentioned as Miss Ward acquaintances from the pre-Jelke days—when she was an already-tarnished belle of cafe society—were Disc Jockey Jack Eigen, Comedian Joey Adams and a "well-known newspaperman" — not identified. Eigen and Adams both denied any more than casual meetings with her. Another one-time acquaintance of the lithe prostitute was said to be Joe Moore, once a champion ice skater. Miss Ward's attorney, J. Roland Sala, said her meetings with the men were "entirely proper." The names of the men were mentioned outside of court by Defense Attorney Sam Segal, who declined to name the newspaperman. He was asked: "Did she say she knew them as customers?" "We didn't speak of customers," Segal told reporters. "We asked her about people she knew." Of Rooney, one of Hollywood's top box office attractions for years, Segal said: "She said she knew him, that she had been out with him, had been to his apartment and had dinner with him. She knew Rooney more than seven months before she met Jelke." "The last meeting with Rooney apparently was in August, 1951, when she went to Mickey's suite in the Sherry Netherland and had lunch and dinner there with him." Of Rooney, one of Hollywood's top box office attractions for years, Segal said: "She said she knew him, that she had been out with him, had been to his apartment and had dinner with him. She knew Rooney more than seven months before she met Jelke. "The last meeting with Rooney apparently was in August, 1951, when she went to Mickey's suite in the Sherry Netherland and had lunch and dinner there with him. "She said she went to see Rooney to ask if he would open the way for her to get into the movies." Both Segal and Sala denied published gossip that Miss Ward and Rooney once were engaged. Jelke, 23-year-old heir to an oleomargarine fortune, is on trial on charges of prostituting Miss Ward and other cafe society charmers for playboys who could afford up to $500 a night for their company. The state alleges the stubby bachelor took Miss Ward in to live with him in September, 1951—at a point when the defense claimed she had already borne an illegitimate child, posed for nude photos and cut a swath through the gilded salons of New York night life. Seven months before this would be about the time the 32-year-old Rooney was breaking up with Actress Martha Vickers, the third of his four wives. He eloped with the fourth, Elaine Mahnken, last November. ACCUSES PRESS — Attorney J. Roland Sala, swinging a walking stick, walks along General Sessions courthouse corridor in New York City with Pat Ward, main witness in the closed Minot (Mickey) Jelke III vice trial. The dapper Sala accused the press of distorting comments by Miss Ward, who appeared again in what she describes as a "Quaker collar." Stanton Area Ranchers Mobilize To Shoot Nocturnal Stock Killer Several ranchers in the Stanton area near S. Western ave. are keeping early morning vigils, armed with shot guns, to try to catch the dog or dogs that have caused so much havoc with rabbits, chickens, pheasants and sheep. One of first reports came from Oscar Van Tine in Hansen Manor that a large animal had eaten all the feet off his rabbits. The supposed dog must have been very large. Van Tine said, because the footprints he left were the size of a human fist. Carl Jameson, chicken rancher at 7341 E. Katella ave., was aroused after a large, short-haired, blonde-colored dog killed five of his chickens about 3 a.m., Monday night. He almost got a bead on the dog but his own dog got in the way. However, Jameson did get a good look at the animal. Other damage has been reported to the sheriff's office by R. B. Tom) Donovan of 1981 S. Western ave. He was awakened by hearing his own dog bark and found a large dog had killed a pet sheep. The other two had run off into another pasture but were badly clawed. The dog jumped and partially tore a five foot steve fence with three rows of barbe wire on either side. Ed Hauptmah on Katella reports the same dog has been after his chickens and a large dog was seen on the Gharles Korn ranch at 10641 S. Western ave., when he killed two grown pigs that Cal Koran, Jr., had raised as a 4-project and was going to market Ralph Jabs on the southeast corner of Ball rd. and Western also reports a large dog has been paying early mornings visits to h place. (P) — The daily newspaper. Judgment and conscience of American editors are under the severest test in history, Palmer Hoyt, editor and publisher of the Denver Post, said here Wednsady. Hoyt delivered the annual William Allen White memorial lecture at the University of Kansas. "Today," Hoyt said, "men with a grievance against fellow men are ignoring the courts of law to spread their charges with despicable recklessness under the protective cloak of congressional immunity." "They are raising matters in such a shape that they may not be ignored. They are challenging editors to set their jaws; to re-examine their consciences." A synonym for irresponsible charges, Hoyt said, is "McCarthyism." He said the term also was a description of an era; an era in which the charge becomes more important that the trial, the proof or acquittal. "The modern form of McCarthyism," the publisher asserted. "was made important by its leading proponent, Sen. Joseph F. McCarthy (R-Wis.) who has substituted newspaper headlines for proof, and whose reckless charges have shocked and excited the nation." Hoyt asserted that "McCarthyism" represents a problem for newspapers with which they will have to cope individually. "Under the operational plan of McCarthy," he said, "plain proof is not essential to his purposes; because each new charge produces a trial in the public prints." "There is no basic law which will insure newspapers against the evils of McCarthyism in handling of headlines, deadlines and news events." Hoyt said that the greatest daily impact in the United States is the Skelton Back in Hospital with Virus Infection HOLLYWOOD (P)—Red Skelton was back in a hospital Wednesday suffering from a virus infection and a severe case of new ralgia. Skelton was operated upon for a diaphramatic hernia in December, and still hasn't seen able to go back to work in a pending move or on his TV show. Dr. Stanley Immerman, who performed the operation, said a statement: "This has nothing whatsoever to do with his recent illness. Baring further complications, I will probably leave the hospice the end of this week." Tentatively, Skelton is scheduled to resume his television show in April. He made several advance before his illness. Roland Sala, swinging Sessions courthouse Ward, main witness III vice trial. The storting comments by what she describes as Mothers, Wives Protest Monroe Role in 'Niagara' HOLLYWOOD UP—Is Marilyn Monroe's portrait of a tramp in her movie too realistic. A trade paper said Wednesday that complaints are "pouring in" to 20th Century-Fox Studio. 20th denied this. Said Variety's article: "Many of the protests are coming in from women's organizations of all descriptions, but many, too, are from individual women deploring the effect Miss Monroe has had on their children, husbands or sweet-hearts." A studio spokesman said there have been complaints "but not any unusual number and absolutely none from organizations." Miss Monroe, who played her part in "Niagara" in a red satin dress and nothing else, commented: "I just did the best I could. The part called for a tramp. I couldn't play it like an ingenuue." asoline savings!
