Browns Still Say No To Video
NEW YORK (P)—Now its official that the St. Louis Browns, still stubborn holdouts on the TV pay issue, will play no night games at Yankee Stadium in 1953.
The New York Yankees, announcing a 14-night game schedule Wednesday, insisted their action was not a "retaliatory" measure. They explained commitments with their TV sponsor called for telecasts of at least 14 home night games.
President Bill Veeck of the Browns, holding out for a share of TV receipts on the road or no TV at all, has refused to permit any Browns games to be televised. The St. Louis Cardinals are following much the same line in the National, although they have signed agreements with Chicago and Cincinnati.
To make up for the absence of the Browns on the night schedule, the Yanks added an extra game with Boston and Cleveland. With the Red Sox and Indians now listed for three night dates and all the other clubs except St. Louis down for two, they have their full 14-game program.

'Higher Fees' for More Fish, Game Lawmakers Told
SACRAMENTO (UP)—Seth Gordon, state fish and game director, told state legislators Wednesday California sportmen would gladly pay higher license fees if they produced more fishing and hunting.
"We are inclined to feel from statements of sportsmen up and down the state that they will gladly put up additional revenue if they are shown the department is operating efficiently and improving conditions for them." Gordon related to an assembly ways and means subcommittee.
A similar view, but with a different slant, came from George Difani, representative of the Organized Sportsmen.
"We will resist any license increase until we can be shown the program is producing more hunting and fishing. We want to see what the new setup will do," he said.
A Alan Post legislative auditor, told the subcommittee costs of the fish and game department next year may be about one and a third million dollars more than will come in through license fees.
The subcommittee took no action on the fees. It approved the department's requested $6,161,508 budget except for a $131,312 item for 28 trappers and hunters which it put aside for further study.

'Experts' Differ on Davey-Gavilan Fight
By JERRY LISKA
CHICAGO (UP) — The welterweight title bout between Champion Kid Gavilan and unbeaten Chuck Davey a week from Wednesday night has puffed an incredible difference of opinion between armchair experts and ringside students of boxing.

Two Assistants Selected by Cardinal Mentor
CHICAGO UP—New head coach Joe Stydale of the Chicago Cardinals Wednesday named two assistants, Ernie Jorge, who resisted during the day as College of Pacific coach, and Dick Gallagher, head coach of Santa Clara which dropped football after last season.
Jorge will be Cardinal line coach and Gallagher will handle the ends, said Stydale, who appeared at a press party honoring him as successor to Joe Kuharch.
Stydale named Cardinal coach last Thursday after Kuharch was fired in a row over assistants, said he would name a backfield coach and possibly another aldea. He did not indicate his probable choices.
Jorge, 38, was the only College of Pacific coach ever offered more than a one-year contract. Last week COP approved a three-year contract for Jorge, whose 1952 team won seven, tied one and lost three. Jorge began at COP as a lins coach in 1947 and moved up to head coach in 1951/He attended St. Mary's College and played guard, under Slip Madigan.
Gallagher, 45, a native of Ironton, O., was an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns in 1947-48-49 and the past three seasons directed Santa Clara Broncos. Gallagher played foolball at Kentucky Wesleyan and in 1940 was an assistant at William and Mary.

MIAMI (AP) — Sunny Dale surprised the midweek crowd of 19,272 at Hialeah park Wednesday when she came out of the pack at the head of the stretch to take the front running Emardee and win the $15,000 added Columbiana handicap.
Sunny Dale whipped the favorored Emardee by three-fourths of a length in the seven furlong sprint for fillies and mares.
La Corredora was third.
Time for the seven furlongs was 1:28 2/3 over a slow track.
Longshots dominated the card and the daily double was a whopping $1,136.40, made up of Troy Weight $26.40. In the first race and Faces East $34.70 in the second.

Fourth Race
It was the fourth terrific race in less than two months for the Aussie comet, who has run three straight mile races in less than 4:04, probably the only man in history to package that many standout performances in so short a space of time.
He excited the track world by running the mile in 4:02.2, only eight tenths of a second off Gundar Haegg's world record, on Dec. 1. On Jan. 3 he covered the mile in 4:02.8 and on Jan. 24 he won the Australian championship on a grass tract at Perthin 4:04.2.
Although he bettered the Australian two-mile mark Wednesday night and won his race by 90 yards the lean speedster failed by 5.2 seconds to break the British Empire record held by Chris Chattaway of England. He was 20.8 seconds short of cracking the world mark held by Belgium's Gaston Reiff.
Troubled by Heat
Landy said he was troubled by the heat.
"I perspired so much at times I could not even see the track," he said.
The race was staged at 9:30 p.m. with the hope of avoiding the intense heat. But the thermometer registered 86.2 degrees and humidity was 46 per cent when Landy began his run.
