CHRISTMAS RUSH—It's on again, in Anaheim post office as well as in every other one across the nation. Above, long lines of package and greeting-bearing Anaheimers await their turns at the local office. (Gazette) Anaheim Post Office Staggers under U Of Christmas Packages, Letters and Yu By JOAN S. WHITE "Do your Christmas mailing early," is advice handed out not so much to help the post office department as to help your packages and letters reach their destination by Dec. 25 in the best possible condition. Multiply the 16,000 packages handled by the local post office in 20 days last year by the number of post offices across the country and you have some idea of the bottlenecks which may ensue. This year Christmas promises to be a $40,000 business at Anaheim's first class post office. Our post office is first class not only from the standpoint of size but from the high quality service rendered by 55 regular employees and some 50 temporarily on duty for the Christmas rush un- 000 packages handled by the local post office in 20 days last year by the number of post offices across the country and you have some idea of the bottlenecks which may ensue. This year Christmas promises to be a $40,000 business at Anaheim's first class post office. Our post office is first class not only from the standpoint of size but from the high quality service rendered by 55 regular employees and some 50 temporarily on duty for the Christmas rush under the very capable direction of Postmaster L. H. Hoskins. Here in Anaheim the volume of outgoing and incoming mail each Christmas has been larger than the previous one. Due probably to increases in Anaheim's population, October and November have already shown a 22 per cent increase. Since the peak day for letters last year showed a count of $4,010 on Dec. 17, the count is expected to go well over 100,000 on at least one day this week. And this figure does not take into consideration the "meter" letter used by 15 large industrial concerns whose volume of business rates a special stamp that does not require the use of the cancelling machine. Additional Floor Space Our local post office is fortunate to have floor space sufficient for the increased needs although are arrangement of cases and racks has been necessary to make additional space on the floor to handle the volume of packages. "It is gratifying," says Postmaster Hoskins, "that in recent years there has been a tendency for early mailing of both Christmas cards and packages and it is hoped that this will be the case for this Christmas period. Patrons of the post office in greater numbers have come to know that if all Christmas mail goes in late, the terminals become so congested that delivery of part of the mail has to be made after Christmas is over." As always, there will be no mail delivery on rural or city routes on Christmas day but all Christmas packages that have arrived prior to Christmas day will be delivered. Stamp Windows There are now two stamp windows open and three employees receiving packages at the parcel post counter. Although this means even faster service than last year, postal employees note that the best time to make use of these facilities is either in mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Noon time is bad presumably because so many people try to do Christmas mailing. ON THE WAY—J. K. Haines, mail messenger, throws one of the last sacks of a load of packages on the truck before taking off for the depot. There are about 130 insured, a claim is made and the sender reimbursed accordingly—but the gift does not make the Christmas deadline. What becomes of letters addressed to Santa Claus? These are sorted from the other mail and sent to the local newspapers for publication. Are there any temporary jobs still available at the post office? More applications for this work have been received that can be used so there are no more jobs to be given out at this Christmas period. Holds Yule Party LONDON, Dec. 15. UP—Queen Elizabeth II tonight threw a real family and staff Christmas party at Buckingham palace. The queen, wearing a gown of silver and gray lace and a diamond tira, gave her first waltz to the yeoman of the glass and china pantry at the palace, Percy Benhalm. The queen's husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, stepped out on the fancy floor with Miss Isabel Ross, palace housemaid. And Princess Margaret, the queen's sister, glided across the cance floor with Inspector F. A. Kelly, the duke's personal police officer. Nation's Official Truman Dedication WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 UP President Truman dedicated magnificent new shrine for Constitution, the Declaration Independence and the Billions Rights today and warned that ideals of liberty they represent in a world struggle for vital. Freedom, the president said is menaced both by Communists and by some who hate Communism yet "want the government to regulate matters the mind and spirit." Chief Justice Vinson of the Supreme Court joined the paired in hailing the three historic documents as living and vital, just treasured relics of the past. “This is a time for sharper to the glistening point their inspirations which we have them,” Vinson said. The president and chief justice were the leading figures in a ceremony at which the newly inaugurated papers were installed formally in a marble, bronze and glass shrine in the Nation's Stamp Windows There are now two stamp windows open and three employees receiving packages at the parcel post counter. Although this means even faster service than last year, postal employees note that the best time to make use of these facilities is either in mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Noon time is bad presumably because so many people try to do Christmas mailing during the lunch hour. The rate on Christmas cards, unsealed with no written message on them, is the same as last year—the 2 cent third class. This may be satisfactory if you have a complete address. However, if there is any doubt do use the first class 3-cent rate. Cards sent first class may contain a written message, may be sealed, and will be forwarded on to a new address if the addressee has moved. Weight Limits By now everyone should be familiar with the different weight limits from Anaheim to different classes of post offices. Keeping in mind these restrictions will save inconvenience in repacking to smaller or lighter packages if the post office is unable to accept them within their regulations. From Anaheim to another office of first class, it is possible to mail 40 pounds to the first and second zones and 29 pounds to the third through the eighth zones. From Anaheim to offices of second, third, and fourth class, you may still send packages that weigh up to 70 pounds. The 70 pound weight limit also applies to packages to military installations and to men in the armed forces overseas. Information, Please What happens to the packages that break open because the sender did not visualize the condition to which they would be subjected in ordinary course of handling and did not use adequate packing? The Yorkmar, a liberty ship, ran around a week ago at the mouth of Grays harbor, 24 miles west of here. All efforts to pull her loose have failed. The crew of 37 remained aboard. Entering Era of Empire, U.S. Political Scientist Tells Group RIVERSIDE, Calif., Dec. 15, (UP) — A political scientist told the 29th Institute of World Affairs today that the United States is entering into an era of empire. "Wesern Europe is already a ward and protectorate of the United States, as are also Japan, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand," said Dr. Grover Blumberger of the department of political science, University of Utah. "America's productive capacity is now far greater than our normal peacetime needs," said Dr. Rich. "We are no longer self-sufficient in a number of critical materials. Our surplus capital seeks foreign outlets. Our military commitments cover the globe. These conditions express themselves in such policies as the Marshall plan, the North Atlantic treaty organization, and point four, all of which are signposts along the path to empire. Dr. Norman A. The new $10,000 building, measuring 40 by 60 feet in dimensions, has sufficient size to house most small private planes, according to Airport Manager William Nichols. As a safety measure, all electric switches have been sealed off from the interior of the shop, and a 48-inch blower is installed at one end of the shop to draw off gaseous fumes.
