Lions, Rams Prepare For Detroit May Field First Stringers If Layne Ready DETROIT, Dec. 15 (AP)—Quarterback Bobby Layne's fitness for starting duty in next Sunday's tie-breaking pro football game means the Detroit Lions will field their first string backfield for the first time in 11 weeks. Lion Coach Buddy Parker had feared a strained ligament might keep Layne out of the National Conference's post-season playoff here in Detroit against the Los Angeles Rams. The game will be televised nationally. The winner will face the Cleveland Browns, champions of the American conference, for the National Football League title Dec. 28 at Cleveland. The Lions licked the Rams twice during the regular season, 17-14 and 24-16, but couldn't do any better than the Rams in the overall won-lost figures. Each won nine, lost three. As for Layne, he's the Lions' No. 1 sparkplug, No. 1 passer and No. 2 ball-carrier. He limped from the field Saturday after stretching a ligament in his left leg. The smiling blond from Texas showed up at the Lions' office today, streamed past a crowd of hundreds waiting to buy tickets and said: "My leg feels good. I'll play." Starting with Layne will be right halfback Bob Hoernschemyer, who missed the last two games because of bruised ribs; left halfback Donak Walker, who missed all but a few minutes of games No. 3 through 11 because of a leg injury; and fullback Pat Harder, who missed all of game No. 3 and part of No. 4. First Baptist Team Leads Church League Win Trio Grace Lutheran, Nazarene and the First Baptist church were winners last night in Church League basketball play. Topping the victors' performances was the First Baptist team which trounced the Church of Christ, 67-26, in a one sided contest that saw the victors leading all the way. The last quarter was the biggest for the First Baptist team which racked up 26 points in that stanza. Grace Lutheran administered decisive drubbing to Bethel Baptist by a 51-17 count. Gene Gibson led the scoring for Grace Lutheran by chalking up an individual tally of 19 points which included eight field goals and one free throw. Moore Training Hard For 'Dream' Fight For Title By MURRAY ROSE ST. LOUIS, Dec. 15 UP—Archie Moore has to pinch himself now and then just to believe that he's actually getting a crack at Maxim's light heavyweight title here Wednesday night. "Year after year I went along knowing that I deserved the oat at the title and hoping that I would get it and nothing happier said Moore as he wound up training. "Then all of a sudden I it—and it seems so sudden, just like a dream." Now that he has his opportunity, the husky 36-year-old Negro intends to make the most of it. He's trained harder and longer for this 15-rounder than for any other scrap in his 16-year pro career. "I've put in nine weeks training and have boxed between 130 and 140 rounds," said Moore. "I'm ready now as I'll ever be and I'm going to take that title. That's what I've been working for these years. "I think I can beat Maxim—I know I can. I think I'll stop him. I've seen Maxim fight and I always did believe I could beat him even in his best days." Long hailed as the "uncrowned champion" as titleholder after title holder passed him by for easier opponents, Moore feels that at 36 he's as good now and maybe better than ever before. "I knew that if I ever was going to get my chance that I would have to keep up with the current contenders," he said. In the last three and a half years, Moore has lost only once in 28 fights and has scored 19 knockouts. His victims included heavyweight contenders Clarence Henry and Jimmy Bivins. His sale loss was to rugged Harold Johnson, the Philadelphia 175 pound contender on Dec. 10 last year. He avenged that defeat by whipping Johnson a month and a half later. He had beaten Johnson twice previously. N. Y. City College Coach Ready To Fight Suspension NEW YORK, Dec. 15. (AP)—Dick Night Train Lane is definitely out of the Detroit game. That was the bad news dished out today to the Los Angeles Rams' high command. Lane, a rookie halfback from Scottsbluff, Neb., broke the National Football league record for interceptions against Pittsburgh Sunday, snaring three Steelers passes to run his string for the season to 14. But he was hurt on the record-breaking 14th. Today doctors diagnosed his injuries as a badly sprained ankle and a badly wrenched knee. Lane had figured prominently in Ram Coach Hap Pool's plans for stopping the sensational Detroit end, Cloyce Box, who caught three touchdown passes Saturday as the Lions clinched a tie with the Rams and forced the western division of the pro loop into a playoff at Detroit next Sunday. Lane's loss will be partly offset by the return of Herb Rich, who was out of the Pittsburgh game because 240 pound Ram Stan Rich, who was out of the Pittsburgh game because 240 pound Stan West stepped on his foot in practice. Pool said today that Rich will play even if his smashed toe isn't entirely well. There's a chance, too, that Elroy Crazy Legs Hirsch may get some duty in the deep defensive spot. Charles had dropped Buford for a 4-count with a two-fisted attack in the sixth and then referee Joe Zapustas stopped it after a straight right to the jaw felled Buford for eight in the next session. Charles weighed '187' to Buford's 202. The 24-year-old Buford—whose most notable ring feat was a verdict over Clarence Henry for the California heavyweight title—was on the defensive most of the way, but Charles was unimpressive as he tried to attack in the early going. The 31-year-old former champion had Buford's nose and mouth bleeding in the third round and stung him with a half dozen hard right hands in the fourth. The crowd of 5095 was stamping its feet for action in the fifth session, which like all the others was Charles' handily. In the sixth, Charles started to show his advertised new slugging style. Hassle Over Official May Cancel St. Mary’s-USC Basketball Game MORAGA, Calif., Dec. 15 (P)—Friday night's scheduled basketball game between St. Mary's and USC may be cancelled because of a disagreement over the assignment of a game official, St. Mary's Coach Tom Foley said tonight. Foley told newsmen that Frank McCormick of Los Angeles, Pacific Coast Conference supervisor of officials, "arbitrarily assigned an official unacceptable to St. Mary's to work the game, second half of a double bill at San Francisco's Cow Palace. La Salle and Santa Clara clash in the opener. Foley made it clear that St. Mary's did not object to the personality of the official, whom he did not name. But he said the man was not on the approved list of the California Basketball association of which St. Mary's is a member. Other members are Santa Clara, USF, San Jose State and College of the Pacific. "This is a matter of principal," the flery, red haired coach declared. "We cannot use that official. It is against league rules." "Moreover we are the home team and we're paying for the officials. Why should McCormick tell us whom we should use? This is autocratic rule by one man and I'm not going to be dictated to. "The college backs me up on this. Unless that official is replaced by one on our list, St. Mary's will not play that game." Foley said he talked with McCormick by telephone this morning, but was told that the game officials have already been notified and must be used. This afternoon, he telephoned Forrest Twogood, USC coach, and was referred to Bill Hunter, USF athletic director. Hunter said he tried to attack in the early going. In that session Charles banged both hands to Buford's head and body and dropped him in a corner for a four-count interrupted by the bell as Buford knelt with his gloves on the canvas: Charles slammed both hands to Buford's head in the seventh and then shot a smashing straight right that landed flush on the Californian's jaw. Buford struggled to his feet at the count of eight, but Zapustas stopped the one-sided battle as one of Buford's handlers tossed in a towel to indicate that Buford had taken enough punishment.
