HENRY KUCHEL 25 Years Ago Misses Rose and Elizabeth Donnelly entertained at a delightful bridge party on Saturday afternoon at their home on Lincoln ave. Dainty refreshments were served at the close of the game. Miss Beryl Kennedy made high score, and Miss Isabel Dolan was second. Those present included the hostesses and their mother Mrs. D. J. Donnelly. Misses Isabel and Geraldine Dolan, Beryl Kennedy, Mildred Henry, Bernardine Schlosser, Helen and Hazel Manter, Marcella Weber, Margaret Dauser, Margaret Bradley, Helen Daly, Jessie Palmer, all of Anaheim and Claire Sharpless of Santa Ana. 50 Years Ago Frank Fox was passing around cigars yesterday on account of the arrival of a new son and heir at his household, who made his appearance on Monday. This makes four, two boys and two girls. Frank says they are pretty nice things to have around the house. Fritz Rukman went to Los Angeles on Tuesday to see Buffalo Bill's show. Fritz used to be a sailor on the Flying Dutchman and takes great interest in athletics and broncos and Injuns, and clerk, which was accepted. H. Blanken and A. W. Steinhart applied for vacant position, but a consideration of the question was postponed until the next regular meeting. After transaction of the regular business, the board met as a Board of Equalization. They will continue meeting from day to day until the assessment list is gone through with. John P. Zeyn was taken to San Francisco yesterday by Dr. Hardin. His disease has assumed a very serious aspect. Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Strew on her roses, roses, And never a spray of yew. In quiet she reposes: Ah! would that I did to. —Matthew Arnold. WISH I SAID—"He who has great power should use it lightly." But Seneca thought of it 1900 75 Years Ago Our Spanish school is attracting a great deal of attention just now. We understand that the pupils are progressing well, notwithstanding their pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet is some what peculiar. One worthy has mastered the pronunciation of "Y" (ee-gree-al-gah) which he invariably insists on giving as Macgregor. The Alden Fruit Dryer is now at work on potatoes, turning out 600 pounds of the dried article daily. This is equal to 3100 pounds of green potatoes. A force of 13 men are kept constantly at work—eight being required to peel and slice the spuds previous to placing them in the evaporator. The stock of potatoes will hold out for a couple of weeks yet, and then the pumpkins will be utilized. Mr. Heiman informed us yesterday that he is endeavoring to make arrangements to secure a live agent in San Francisco who would peddle the products of the Anaheim Alden Works from house to house and thus bring the articles directly to the notice of consumers. It strikes us as a very good idea. The following freight was shipped from the depot this morning: two kegs beer; 200 boxes raisins, 5 pipes wine, 25 sks potatoes, 7 cars sheep. The schools are now under the charge of Mr. J. M. Guinn, Miss des Granges and Miss Austin. The Board of Town Trustees met yesterday, all present except Langenberger. M. L. PASTIMES—Dino Sbardellati, like all papas of small fry, takes special interest in Christmas shopping . . . Leavitt Ford, likewise, enjoys the Yule Tide, because it is something the kids take to so naturally . . . Homer Wallace has done a banner business this year issuing building permits. It’s quite a chore . . . Bob Larson, former Anahelmer, is now an outstanding young Santa Claire leader. Just about a year ago while on a trip to New Zealand, the Santanans named him the man of the year . . . Which reminds us that Lloyd Rutteel, another Anahelmer, is being boomed for a mighty important civic role in Fullerton . . . Howard Hineman, another local boy who made good, is an engineer with the State Department of Highways. His trying to unravel the mystery of metropolitan traffic. It can’t be done. Traffic will get a whole lot worse before it gets any better. PETS—Elmer Williams is looking for a cat to replace Smokey, a black cat that had a mind of its own. Maybe we should make him a present of our pedigree Heinz 67. This is a cat! It won’t eat meat, but prefers a diet of corn and other vegetables. Guess it wouldn’t harm a mouse unless the mouse ran in its mouth. Never seen the likes of it. MEMO—Santa Claus is coming! Only eight more shopping days left in which to do your Christmas shopping in Anaheim’s friendly stores.
