ACCIDENTS — During 1951, from coast to coast and border to border, the screech of brakes, the whine of tortured tires, the tinkle of breaking glass, followed by the shrill wall of sirens could be heard from Boston to Balboa. Those were the sounds that accompanied the death, dealing, bone-crushing auto accidents. Accidents are noisy. Death is silent. The 37,100 souls who departed as result of those smash-ups passed from this life into eternity silently, while 1,962,600 others were injured in the wake of these accidents. The Travelers' insurance people have compiled a lot of statistics indicating that most automobile accidents occur between 6 and 7 p.m. Really, it doesn't matter when most accidents occur. What matters most, if they happen to you. It has been proven conclusively that an enlightened, safety-conscious community is a much safer one in which to live—and to drive. For some time, a member of the air police will ride with patrolmen when they are working near military installations. Clifford E.
