Drew, USN, left commanding officer at naval air station. Los Alamitos, is shown discussing the new Hiller Helicopter squadron with the commanding officer of the unit, Lieut. Commander William C. Garrett, Jr., USNR, right, 7732 Raymond st., Anaheim. Anaheim 'Weekend Warrior' C. O. Of New Navy Helicopter Squadron The helicopter, proven invaluable in modern air-sea warfare, is now to be a familiar sight to residents of the Orange county area with the commissioning of Helicopter Squadron HU 771 at U.S. Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos. The squadron's primary mission will be search and rescue work and full-scale training is expected to begin shortly. Skipper of the new squadron is Ligutenant Commander William C. Garrett, USNR of 7732 Raymond st., who until recalled to active duty for this assignment, was a special representative of the Southern Counties Gas company. LCDR Garrett has logged over 3400 hours in various types of Naval aircraft. The unit is composed of about 15 officers and 20 enlisted men and will fly the HTE, Hiller Helicopter. Pilot for the versatile "eggbeaters" were selected from the ranks of the Naval Air Reserve "Weekend Warriors" who are considered outstanding Naval Aviators and who have expressed the desire to fly this type of aircraft. They receive their training at Elysian Field, Pensacola, Florida, where they are required to log over 40 hours of helicopter time. The helicopter has proven itself an invaluable military aircraft in the Korean war. It has been used for almost every conceivable duty. Navy and Marine helicopters have spotted hits for artillery, rescued downed pilots, evacuated wounded or trapped troops, carried advancing troops from hill to hill, and carried the U.S. truce delegation to meetings as a few of their accomplishments. Simulated 40,000 Foot Flight Made By Local Ensign U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION, San Diego—a simulated altitude of 40,000 feet was attained by Ens. Robert A. Berg, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Berg of 412 S. Helena st., in the Navy's low-pressure chamber here where the squadron is stationed. This training was given to demonstrate the operation of equipment previously explained to the students in lectures. The periodic checkups are part of the Navy's program to keep its men informed of the latest developments in oxygen equipment. Arthur H. Cano Promoted to Cpl. WITH THE 25TH INFANTRY DIV.
