NEUBAUER WEATHERWISE — While the East and Midwest were sunparched by blistering summer heat, Anaheim and Southern California remained relatively cool. Overcast skies, cool breezes kept the thermometer from spurting upward. NEWSWISE — Little Gary (Skipper) Kauffman, Jr., two-year-old son of an aircraft worker, was given a 50-50 chance for survival following delicate brain surgery. The child was shot through the head during the fusillade of bullets that climaxed the brief reign of terror when his father, Gary Kauffman, Sr., 30, kidnapped James Merritt and his two year old son, Jimmy, together with little Gary. Kauffman was cut down when he elected to shoot it out with police. A Santa Ana boy, Jimmy Kilvore, 12, was killed accidentally near Oceanside by a rifle shot.
