Mississippi flood dangers were increasing, though levees were holding.. Services for Don Nickey, 22-year-old private, were held... Yorba Linda won the civic beautification award. Mrs. John H. Anderson accepted the trophy.... The El Toro Marine base was using more than a million gallons of water supplied by four wells. The base metro-water line was under construction.... County employees were granted a pay hike totaling $246,444... Sportswise, Fullerton college beat Santa Ana, 4-3, in baseball. Huntington Beach whacked Anahi, 11-4... Rev. Phillip Selfridge announced that the United Brethren had purchased a new church site at Lemon and South Streets.. That was the news Anaheimers read a year ago. Remember? He’s out to “prove” himself. Although he wasn’t altogether satisfied with this contract, he didn’t dare to ask for more because of his layoff last season... There’s a certain young lady who knows Larry Kirchmann is going to beat Landon Carter. Lynn Arnett, the Anaheimer who moved to Orange, is still making bowling history. He’s quite a kegler. In fact he's as good as he was on the softball diamond.. Dr.J.W.Truxaw is what you’d call a good tenant. He’s had his office in the same building for 40 years or so. John Trezise missed an opportunity of a lifetime. He could have been Hans Kohlenberger's partner in the ice machinery manufacturing business. Both were icemen working for the same concern when Handy Hans got his big idea. Next to lending small fry a helping hand, Tom Henry, the cold storage man, would rather go fishing. Frank Maldonado’s claim to fame is the nicknames he hung on some famous Anaheimers. They stole... The government is running about three million checks behind last year in disgorging its annual golden flood of taxes in reverse. Treasury officials told a reporter today the Revenue Bureau is giving refund requests a closer scrutiny than usual this year, thus causing a lag. But don't worry too much—the rate of output is stepping up rapidly. Paul Banning, chief distributor for the treasury, estimated about eight million checks will be malled in April and nine million in May. From the start of the fiscal year last July through April 17, the Treasury dropped 16,200,000 refund checks into the mail. During the same period last year, it sent out 18,900,000 individual income tax refounds. The average refund is bigger this year—$60.72 compared with $50.58 last year. The dollar total through April 17 this year was 983,000,000 compared with .945,-000,000 at the same point last year. For Health. Mort was too busy building houses, storefronts and remodeling old homes. He made a lot of money and saved most of it... "Well," he used to say, "I'll work while I'm young. I'll salt it away, and when I go old I'd be able to sit back and take it easy." ... "It's later than you think;" his friends would say. "Why don't you go fishing or hunting? Why don't you get yourself a hobby?" ... "I have a hobby," he'd say, "Work!" .. His friend couldn't understand him Neither could he condone his friends. His bank account grew and grown. He smiled when he compared his lot in life with his friends who spent their earnings—in his estimation—a foolishly. He had property. He was well to do. As the years rolled on, his friends had to keep on working. He could retire after he's built one more house. Well, Old Mort has retired。他 had to。He's an inmate in a sanitarium — he lost his mind。他的朋友,though not financially solvent still enjoy life。 NITECAPSULE — What's become of the little taxpayer?
