B: BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (PA) — How do they do it—dancers like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Ray Dolgen? Astaire has run through dozens of toupes, but he still dances like a whirlwind at 52¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹⁷ Bolger is back in Hollywood; doing some of his wonderful dances in "April in Paris." So I asked him for the secret on how he and his colleagues remain in such good form. "The only thing I can suggest," he replied, "is that we learned to dance differently from the kids of today. When I started out, I first learned how to dance in wooden shoes. The clog taught me to dance on my toes. That was before the graf of having metal taps on the sores of the shoes." "Because of the taps, today a dancers learn to dance on the balls of their feet. That's a lot harder on them than dancing on their toes, as I do." "But don't a dancer's legs give out eventually?" I asked. "Not necessarily," Bolger replied. "Not long ago I did a television show with Pat Rooney. I saw him do a dance that was a marvel of agility, and Pat is well into his 70's!" It's not the usual thing in show business to praise others in the same field but Bolger a high opinion of Astray. "Fred is simply said Bolger. His ex denotes class. Kelly but in a different way, athletic grace." Bolger mourned the newcomers do not have ing grounds that hid did. "VAUDEVILLE IS the repertory the marked. 'But the sit bopeeless. There are tunities for young girls ahead. For instance, a Broadway show, I helpals for the understudies of them have gone on roles because of it." "And TV is helping stars too. I know of prospect than your O'Connor. And Imogen Sid Caesar, who kno Broadway for a long come into their own on." "We used to put musical productions for no commented." A musical runs from $200,000 to $300,000. Naturally, no single person can put up that much money. That means that the money has to be solicited from backers. I've known of shows that held auditions for prospective backers for two years or more, and still could not raise enough money.
