Want to know how happy, how much loved by family and friends, how serene and contented you will be 20 years from today? You can determine the answer yourself, according to Gaylord Johnson in the March Journal on living. He reports on the results of a new study by a team of Ohio university psychologists, Dr. S. Pressey and Elizaebth Simcoe. The psychologists investigated the lives of 553 men and women whose age averaged 75 years. Rought to light were four main traits shared in common by those older people who considered themselves happy—and lacking in those who were definitely unhappy. The "happifying" traits can be developed into a four-point formula that practically guarantees our happiness 20 years from now. 1. Keep busy. Never be idle, with time for self-pity. 2. Be social. Don't be an exclusive seclude. Belong to a church and a club. Go where people meet and talk. Be a joiner. 3. Be accomplished. Play, sing, paint, make furniture—do whatever you like best, and don't be bashful about letting others benefit from it. 4. Be interested in life. Take everything it offers for your pleasure, instruction—or even opposition! If you hate the stupid way something is being done, start a crusade to better the situation. Cultivating these characteristics, points out the Journal of Living, is important for living with satisfaction at the beginning of life and all through it.
