Lewis Boys, Table Topic Chairman started the fireworks by choosing the subject of the recent steel mill seizures for his topic of the evening. Interest ran high. Toastmaster Dick Herman presided over the program of speeches which were as follows: Ralph Alexander spoke on "Gold Is Where You Find It"; Britt Gray upon "Imperialism"; Bob Edison took as his topic, "All In a Day's Work," and Louis Taylor expounded upon "The Weather." Evaluation and criticism was by Head Evaluator Bob Allan and his assistants, Hank Allan and Guy Holman. Visiting the club for the first time was Mr. M. C. Smigielski, of Anaheim. The meeting was at Lum's restaurant across town. Asked yesterday how many desertions occurred at home and overseas since the Korean war started, a spokesman told a reporter the figures are classified. (That means they bear one of these stamps: top secret, secret, confidential or restricted.) Members of a Congressional committee who recently asked a somewhat similar question also apparently didn't get an answer, although they weren't told the information was classified. During hearings by a House appropriations subcommittee on the military budget for the next fiscal year starting July 1, the Army asked for $1,957,000 for the apprehension and return of deserters, an increase of $300,000 over last year. Rep. Sikes (D-Fla) asked the colonel testifying if that meant the cost was up "or do you have more deserters?" Col. V. M. Budge, chief of the Army's budget division, answered, "we do not maintain any statistics about deserters" in his office, that budget requests are estimated by the field armies and overseas commands on the basis of the information they have. The published report on the hearing indicates Sikes never did learn whether there are more deserters. The colonel subsequently explained that one item in the increase was accounted for by a change in law. The Army now bears the cost of sending men out to bring an apprehended deserter back. Until recently, the travel cost of the guard, plus that of the prisoner, was charged against the pay of the returned deserter. Wingtip Fuel Tanks Predicted For Airliners BURBANK (AP) A top aircraft engineer predicts that wingtip fuel tanks will appear on commercial airliners within three years. He said they'll give the planes a smoother ride and will add more range to flights. Clarence L. Johnson, Lockheed Aircraft Corp.'s chief research engineer, said tiptanks will be necessary when turbo-prop engines come into use on commercial planes. The turbo-props consume fuel as much as 54 percent faster than conventional engines. The 600-gallon tiptanks, standard on military ships, curb vibration and strengthen an airplane wing in flight. Johnson said, despite their loaded weight of 3000 pounds apiece. Associated Farmers Row with Labor Department over Farm Unionization SACRAMENTO (CNS) — The Associated Farmers of California barreled head-on into what promises to be a major row with the federal department of labor last week. Charles E. Gibbs, executive secretary of the organization, charged that Maurice Tobin, secretary of labor, is "attempting to ram unionization down the throats of California farm workers." Gibbs charged that Tobin, in appointing a committee on importation of foreign farm work, Y's Men See New Kwikset Lock Film The "world premier" of the new Kwikset Lock motion picture film "Securily You're" was presented for the Anaheim Y's Men's club at a regular dinner meeting held last night at the YMCA. The film, graphically describing the unique master-keying and masoning techniques employed by Kwikset Lock firm in Anaheim, demonstrated the methods of either creating one key for many locks, or one lock for many keys. The meeting was the first presided over by new club president Bob Quast. Other activities included the club approval of the patio project for the Y building ers, had ignored both farmers and their employees. All 18 members of the committee, said Gibbs, were named from the ranks of the AFL and CIO. The Associated Farmer group said that the Tobin committee, among other things, urged that imported farm labor be guaranteed the right to be represented in their dealings with employers by genuine trade union, and stated this is a bold attempt by organized labor to force unionization of farm workers in California and the nation. Gibbs said California farmers will "fight this attempt at unionization to the last ditch." He pointed to a recommendation of the committee which urged that no estimates of need for foreign workers be released until public hearings have determined availability of the domestic labor supply. “This,” he said, “amounts to no more than asking the farmer to wait until his crop is ready for harvesting before making plans for the workers he needs to do the job. Anyone with even a faint knowledge of farming knows this would be too late, and could only create a crisis that could be capitalized on by the union.” FUNERAL SERVICES Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held for Mrs. Laura Graves tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of Back, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary. Requiem Mass will be said Thursday. The film, graphically describing the unique master-keying and masoning techniques employed by Kwikset Lock Firm in Anaheim demonstrated the methods of either creating one key for many locks, or one lock for many keys. The meeting was the first pressided over by new club president Bob Quast. Other activities included the club approval of the patio project for the Y building that will see the walling-in and paving of the entire area to the rear of the building. A life sketch was given by Warren Smith and group singing was led by Tommie Thomason. Don Hein presented a brief inspirational talk. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
