Earl Warren in Disagreement with Senator Robert Taft Over China
NEW YORK (UP) — Gov. Earl ritory."
Warren of California expressed disagreement last night with Sen. Robert A. Taft on the latter's proposal that Chinese nationalist forces on Formosa be equipped with U.S. arms for an invasion of communist-held territory.
Both Warren, who was the Republican vice presidential candidate in 1948, and Taft are campaigning this year for the Republican presidential nomination.
Taft made his proposal Tuesday night in a Lincoln day speech at Seattle. He foresaw an assault by the communists on southeast Asia and said the "only chance to effect this invasion, Taft said, American arms and training should be rushed to nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek on Fornosa.
Warren, in the second of two television appearances here yesterday and last night, said he disagreed with Taft on this point and added:
"I don't see how we can just arm 300,000 soldiers and send them to conquer China unless we are prepared to follow through and finish the job for them if they failed."
Warren was told on one of the
NBC Disbands Idea About Telecast of Queen Coronation
NEW YORK (UP)—The National Broadcasting Co., has decided against an attempt to telecast the coronation of Queen Elizabeth to viewers in this country.
Network spokesman yesterday disclosed that plans for such an attempt were in the works. But last night, after a conference of top network officials, a statement was issued saying, "NBC has no plans for a live telecast of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II."
The plan, as outlined by a network spokesman, would have been to relay the signals across the Atlantic by means of planes flying 250 to 300 miles apart, carrying lightweight microwave radio relay equipment. The equipment would be a miniature version of the apparatus used on towers for the microwave radio relay systems used for television network circuits. Such a method of spanning the Atlantic with TV has been suggested by a number of industry leaders.
NBC did not amplify its statement as to reasons for dropping the plan. However, industry circles said that even if the airborne relay should prove technically feasible, the expense would be very heavy.
WOMAN FOOLS EXPERIENCE
SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—Sure, a woman may lie about her age. And it's a man's fault if he's fooled, especially if he's already been married three times.
That's what Superior Judge Melvyn I. Cronin said yesterday in granting Max Kornhaber, 57, a divorce instead of an annulment from Anna, 72, whom he married four months ago.
Kornhaber, a painter, told the judge his wife said she was 60.
Judge Cronin snapped:
"A man of your experience should be a better judge of a woman's age."
JETS COLLIDE IN AIR
TOKYO (UP)—Two U. S. Thunderjets collided on a routine patrol flight today and plunged into the sea in Tsugaru straits between Hokkaido and Honshu islands.
One of the F-84 pilots was rescued by Japanese fishermen. The other apparently was killed by the force of the collision, Far East Air Forces said.
Headquarters quoted a witness as saying one of the jets exploded after the collision.
The rescued pilot was reported only slightly injured. Names were withheld.
