by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty—II Cor. 3:17.
VALENTINE — Roses are red; violets are blue; sugar is sweet; and so are you. Reckon those are the sentiments of most Valentines.
YESTERYEAR — A year ago, this Valentine's Day, the Yanks were hammering back a giant red offensive in that Korean "police action." ... Lloyd C. Douglas, the famous author, died ... The accused Costa Mesa mother, Mrs. Cordelia Green, told officers that she beat her infant daughter with her fists, because she cried ... War casualties numbered 48,035 ... Glenn Stroud resigned from the Anaheim Police department. Richard Hoag was appointed in his stead ... Work on the Santa Ana freeway in Orange county will soon begin as $1.5-million earmarked for the project ... Robert Hutain was presented with a Valentine by his wife, Jean — a baby girl ... Sportswise, Garden Grove won the Orange county league cage title by beating Tustin, 45-37, at Fullerton ... That's what transpired a year ago today. Remember?
ANAHEIM NEEDS — Adaquate interurban transportation is a vital necessity to a growing community.
Check Being Made Into Files of Prominent Man
SAN FRANCISCO GP—A House investigator said today the San Francisco Internal Revenue office "at best was very slovenly in handling" the income tax case of George T. Davis, prominent San Francisco Democrat.
A Ways and Means subcommittee spent yesterday questioning Treasury department agents. Members said they wanted to determine if Davis received favored treatment from the bureau.
"It seems to be a case—at the best—of very slovenly handling," said Chairman Cecil King (D.C. Calif) of the bureau's dealing with Davis. "Perhaps it is unfortunate that a prominent political figure happens to be the one involved, with its very reasonable implications."
Davis was 1948 campaign manager in Northern California for the President Truman-Barkley ticket.
Under questioning, three Treasury agents told King's committee that (1) Davis' bank deposits exceeded his reported income by more than $10,000 in each of 1946, 1947 and 1948; (2) Intelligence agent William Sherman saw no evidence of fraud and so "suggested" a routine audit "at the convenience" of regular revenue agents; (3) Apparently no such audit was made; (4) An investigation still is going on into Davis' 1949 taxes.
Today, the subcommittee resumed its study of charges against Justice department prosecutors during the tax office investigation here.
Valentine by his wife, Jean — a baby girl ... Sportswise, Garden Grove won the Orange county league cage title by beating Tustin, 45-37, at Fullerton ... That's what transpired a year ago today. Remember?
ANAHEIM NEEDS — Adaquate interurban transportation is a vital necessity to a growing community. Anaheim is the business hub of Northern Orange county. A bus service to the communities surrounding Anaheim would be beneficial both to Anaheim and the respective communities served.
FATE—Roy S. Patterson, 45, was seriously burned when he attempted to light a coal stove with gasoline at the McCoy-Mills Fullerton auto agency last week. He suffered burns on the leg, thigh, groin and about the face and arms in the backflash from the explosion. That was what the news story concerning Pat said. There is more to it, though. The good-natured, soft-spoken fellow is the original hard-luck guy. During the war, he was a shipyard worker. His job crippled him when he was hurled down a hold of a ship by a hatch cover. He lost a leg and practically the use of a hand. But he didn't complain. Just a year or so before his step-daughter—a junior college student—lost both of her legs when she was caught between the bumpers of a couple of cars. She overcame this handicap... His wife, Maude, likewise must have been a very plucky person for she has had to make the best of adversity. Her first husband was killed in an industrial accident. Such people as the Pattersones must be admired. Life has given them a tough go, but they make the best of it without complaining; because, as Pat once said: "If I think I've got tough luck, I just look around and see a lot of other folks who ares so much worse off than I. Most folks don't know how lucky they actually are."
Senator Kefauver Off and Running In New Hampshire
MANCHESTER, N. H. (P) — Senator Estes Kefauver's "grass roots" campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination swung into high gear in New Hampshire today in sub-freezing temperature.
The tall Tennesseean—intent on meeting the rank and file people to test his popularity with President Truman in the first-in-the-nation primary March 11—headed away from the state capital in Concord this morning on the first leg of an automobile tour that was scheduled to take him to every sizeable community in the state.
The southerner opened his campaign officially last night in Concord where scores of his friends visited him in his hotel.
His supporters, particularly Hugh Waling, New Hampshire chairman of the Kefauver presidential movement, expressed high

Such people as the Patterson must be admired. GOLF NOTE—Anaheim will be well represented in the annual Hot Stove League golf tournament at the Fox Hills course. Competing with the big name baseball golfers will be Harold (Skeets) Gregg who will be playing in the same foursome as Jack Salveson. Bobby Adams will also be an Anaheim colorbearer. Jess Flores, La Habra's contribution to the national pastime, will also participate. Peanuts Lawrey is the defending champion, but look for Gregg to give 'em a lot of competition. If the guy doesn't choke up in the last hole, he'll win it t'marrow.
POLITICS—Now that it's municipal election time, it's strange that there aren't more candidates for the vacancies. Anaheim has been especially fortunate in having a first-class city council. They're for the welfare of Anaheimers, rather than for pressure groups as is the case in many municipalities.
NITECAPSULE — Folks who have time to spare, generally spend it with someone who hasn't a moment to spare.

the first leg of an automobile tour that was scheduled to take him to every sizeable community in the state.
The southerner opened his campaign officially last night in Concord where scores of his friends visited him in his hotel.
His supporters, particularly Hugh Waling, New Hampshire chairman of the Kefauver presidential movement, expressed high optimism the senator would get more votes than the president in the "popularity" vote as well as more delegates to the Democratic national convention.
President Truman and Kefauver are entered in the presidential preference primary and both have candidates for delegates "favorable" to them.
Martin Fay, liaison man for Kefauver in New England, said the tentative schedule called for stops in Manchester and then a swing around Hillsborough county communities including Milford, Jaffrey, Hillsborough and Keene.
An overnight stop probably will be made in Keene. Friday's itinerary may include Claremont, Newport and Lebanon.
Fay said it was likely the snow-covered area to the north, including some ski slope territory, might be visited. This would take in Berlin, North Conway and Laconia.
Mrs. Kefauver is accompanying her husband on the trip.
