Reason for such belief is that science has made astounding discoveries concerning lighting, ventilation, and climate conditioning—three factors which windows do affect. For centuries windows have been used mainly to let in daylight. Often, too, of course, windows have been used for letting in fresh air. And, also, windows have been used for air conditioning—to let in cool breezes or to keep out stormy winds. But now we know that windows serve us better when they are used, and therefore, designed, for just one purpose—letting in the daylight. The regulation of fresh air, and the warming effects of the powerful sun should be managed through other means. Special Opening Needed: Air, as such, should be regulated by special openings which have no connection with the window the extra warmth of the summer time should be thrown without shutting out the sun. But how? First, home owners and builders will quickly be aware that sunlight is so prudent inside a room, that the room so, its windows) must be designed to let the sunlight in, and it enter the room in the most effective manner possible. That include having windows which tend right to the ceiling, across the length of the roof will mean a designed house permits two or three outside Seasons Greetings The foundation of all business is Greetings The foundation of all business is confidence, and to you, whose confidence we treasure, we sincerely wish a Christmas of great joy ANAHEIM 2271 PLACENTIA 317 GIBBS LUMBER FULLERTON 2942 XULE DECORATED HOME of Mr. and Mrs. Vic Bonnat, which is the first home that strikes the eye as one enters Evelyn dr., was a brilliantly lighted Christmas pageant last night as the lights were turned on for the first time this season. Each of the 36 families that reside in this exclusive residential area has been at work for weeks in preparation for the grand opening. Life size animated figures cut from plywood or metal and accompanied by sound effects and lovely colored lights are beautifully done, and reflect the effort for each room, so that ample light will enter from more than one side — thus diffusing sunlight throughout the room, and not just splattering it here and there so as to create more glare than useful light. Engineered Circulation Second, it will mean that houses will use some other means than windows to let fresh air into the lighted Christmas pageant last night as the lights were turned on for the first time this sea-land.—(Gazette photo by Kreidt) BUGS PLAYS SANTA—H. F. Barnesberger's home at 13252 S. Orahgewood ave. features Bugs Bunny playing Santa Claus with bunnies replacing reindeer as the sleigh's motive power. Behind the sleigh, Pluto searches for an elephant and Elmer Fudd brings up the real usual, chasing bugs. The whole display is mated.—(Gazette photo by Kreidt) The Warren Pucketts have chosen puppets to portray their version of fairyland and a cow really jumps over the moon. An extremely realistic life-size Santa stands at a big fireplace outside the Leonard Bouas home while youthful figures watch wide-eyed. Down the street, he cracks his whip from a well filled sleigh as his reindeer race along the roof of the D. O. Norland home. The Donald Bates have created the illusion of toyland with their wooden soldiers which march in unison. These appealing scenes built upon childhood memories are interspersed with deeply moving religious themes designed to catch the real spirit of Christmas. The E. G. Spraetz family have done so with a life size nativity scene lined with lights. Turned on at Darlt. The colorful lights which a warm glow over the neighborhood are switched dark and are turned off at 10 o'clock. During the between is a steady process folks who come to see play. Some walk and somber by car. If you join the you will see that they quiet, peaceful crowd who content to feast their eyes in interest and awe. Last by actual count, fifty cars toured Evelyn Drive the holiday season. Evelyn Drive is named V. J. Bonnat whose husband built each of the in the settlement and who instrumental in starting the mas tradition there. Childless themselves, the nats give an annual party for the more than 50 sters who reside in the little munity. The party is for each room, so that ample light will enter from more than one side — thus diffusing sunlight throughout the room, and not just splattering it here and there so as to create more glare than useful light. Engineered Circulation Second, it will mean that houses will use some other means than windows to let fresh air into the home. The obvious solution is to design houses so that, at logical scientifically designated spots, adjustable louvers or openings will let incoming air enter the rooms so as to create no draft, yet promote housewide circulation. It will also mean that stale air will be routed out of the house by mechanical means—probably electric fans. Third, it will mean that the heat of the sun must be deflected from the window—from the outside. (Once the sun's heat is inside your house, it is costly to cool it). The outside protection against the heat of the sun, will be accomplishable without shutting out the light. Many of them are among our finest and sturdiest trees, and produce a useful crop with comparatively little work. This still applies to the English walnut, which has been losing face lately because of the inroads of codling moth and husk fly. If control work is done on these pests in time, the home owner can get a good yield of nuts, at less cost than he would have to pay the grocer. English walnuts grow well in any deep fertile soil, furnish ample shade in summer and in winter the white branches have a beauty of their own. Deep irrigations are necessary for avalnuts because they are deeply rooted. Among varieties available Placentia has been the most popular in this area. The nuts are smooth, rather oval, with thin shells. The tree is a heavy bearer. Payne is an early bearing strain with nuts similar to Placentia. The tree is rather smaller than Placentia and apparently not so long-lived. Eureka is a larger tree, really better than the above for shade tree. It stands more heat and cold, is a lighter bearer and begins bearing later, but the nuts are good sized and very fine, both in appearance and eating quality. The black walnut is not very popular in this area at present, but it is a good shade tree. There is a variety of the Eastern black Thomas, which is thinner shelled and easier to shell than the usual varieties. Black walnut wood is valuable and likely to increase in value, a point to think of for the future. Pecans generally bear well only in the interior and are slow to start, but their peculiar flavor is very appealing and they do make fine shade trees. For coastal areas the Nellis is perhaps the best. Nuts are long and thin-shelled. Success is an old variety with oblong nuts. Mahan is a large nut, thin-shelled. Eat More California Oranges DON'T FORGET YOUR HOME at CHRISTMAS TIME!
