A few days ago this column made something of the fact that city officials were finding it difficult to go through the mechanics of drawing up a lease which would permit an oil company to explore for oil from the north-end industrial area. Our view was the city should give a definite "yes" or "no" on the matter. This week a surface lease and a variance were granted by the city which permit the petroleum company to begin drilling operations from a site just south of the Easex Wire Co. plant. If oil is found, the city will receive a good royalty from the petroleum production. The city, however, did not enter into the community lease which would permit city-owned property to share in the royalties Anyway, we want it recorded that this column can be complimentary as well as critical. Mayor Pearson, and the other city officials involved, cleaned up the surface lease and variance muddle in a business-like manner this week. All of us certainly can commend them for jumping into the job and getting it done. Likewise, the people of Anaheim may well be satisfied with the site selected by the Steele Petroleum Co., and the city for the first drilling operations. It is well screened by large industrial plants and will not create a traffic or safety problem. And, we believe very few people will be aware of the drilling operations. (But, since the drilling is going ahead, we hope any inconvenience...) I would like a doll house, a nurse kit, and a doll bus. Dear Santa: Please bring me a doll, and a cow girl suit. Threaten Susanne Martin. Dead Santa Claus: Will you bring me a doll chalk board. Thank you Judy Joyce. Dear Santa: Please bring an electric bulb. Thank you Santa. Bobby Hammier. Dear Santa Claus: I want a good gun. Thank Santa. Mark Oden. Dear Santa: I want a nurse kit, and a dog. Thanks. Gary Wimberly. Dear Santa: I would like a doll, and a house. Thank you Santa. Dear Santa Claus: I would like a doll house, a nurse kit, and a doll bus. and a variance were granted by the city which permit the petroleum company to begin drilling operations from a site just south of the Essex Wire Company. If oil is found, the city will receive a good royalty from the petroleum production. The city, however, did not enter into the community lease which would permit city-owned property to share in the royalties which go to holders of sub-surface leases. This may come along later. Likewise, the people of Anaheim may well be satisfied with the site selected by the Steele Petroleum Co., and the city for the first drilling operations. It is well screened by large industrial plants and will not create a traffic or safety problem. And, we believe very few people will be aware of the drilling operations. (But, since the drilling is going ahead, we hope any inconvenience to nearby residents will more than be compensated by some good royalties later.) Bound to die... This weekend some unknown American will get the honor that no one wants. It is the honor of becoming the 1,000,000th automobile fatality in this country. The person who gets the dubious distinction may even now be curiously following the National Safety Council's careful check of traffic deaths as they near the 1,000,000 mark, and saying to himself: "Boy, I'm hate to be the unlucky guy they're looking for." Who will it be? The first man killed by a motor car was a pedestrian, a broker who was run down in New York the evening of Sept. 19, 1898. Who will the 1,000,000th be? A school child darting across the street? A housewife driving home from Christmas shopping? An old lady coming home from church? A teen-ager speeding his plowy too fast around a curve? A drunk behind the wheel where he doesn't belong? There is something macabre about the air of expectancy with which the nation awaits the identity of its 1,000,000th traffic victim in 51 years. Death on the highways has become so commonplace it has become a fact of existence, a risk the American people are so accustomed to that they no longer think it very odd that motor vehicles have caused them more crises in half a century than all their wars put together. The slaughter goes on all but unnoticed except in the homes it touches... 100 yesterday... 100 tomorrow... more than 100 in Orange county this year. Who will the 1,000,000th victim be? ... Rich man... poor man... or a baby in some one's arms? The one sure thing is that it might be you. Of course, the odds are in your favor. The chances on any one day are about 1,550-000 to 1 that you won't be killed by an automobile. Your chances against being malmed aren't that high. If you are the unlucky 1,000-000th fatality, the chances are that you will die by an accident that could have been avoided. There will probably be pictures in the papers from coast to coast of how you looked alive, and how you looked dead and the story of how you kept your small rendezvous with destiny. There will be several thousand editorials to lament your passing and to point out again the old moral: "It's better to be safe than sorry." You will be a brief celebrity for sure—a celebrated corpse for a day. This kind of fame, however, is hardly rewarding. You will have made a sad Christmas season for those who loved you, and you yourself will have lost that bright gift of time—life. The automobiles will go right on killing... the toll will begin its climb toward the second million victim... and you will be forgotten, or remembered at best as only a minor footnote in the history of the machine age. Dear Santa: Please bring me a gun. Thanks. Gary Wimberly Dear Santa: I would like a doll, and a house. Thank you Santa. IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 50 Years Ago December 1901 Miss Marle Horstman was called to San Francisco yesterday by the sad intelligence of the death of her brother, Henry Horstman, who died in that city on Tuesday. Mr. Horstman visited Anaheim with his wife during the fore part of the year. He made many friends who deeply regret his untimely end. He leaves a wife, but no children. He was aged 43 years. Ed Boege and Bob Mills drove down to the Landing on Saturday night to be early at a whirl at the birds the next morning. They returned on Sunday evening with a bag of 10 fine ducks. 25 Years Ago December 1926 Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wintter were tendered a surprise party by their children—Wint J. Wintter, Mrs. Marie Turner, Albert Wintler and Mrs. Bertha Ortega—at their home at 519 E. Broadway, on the eve of their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Saturday, December 4. A large number of relatives and friends were present. Mrs. Eva Lyons Smith played the wedding march and Charles E. Stone read the ceremony. During the evening the large wedding cake was cut and served with punch. George Bauer told about the wedding of Jacob Wintter and Miss Mary Ellinger which occurred at his father's home, on Elm street, between Clementine and Helena streets in this city, Dec. 5, 1876. Among those present besides the family were, Mrs. J. Nebolung, Mr. and Mrs. J. Vetter, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Beazley, Miss Nets Borden, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kroeger, J. T. DATED DEC. 17, 1951: HENRY M. LOY, HAROLD A. HUNLEY, Mortgager and/or VERNON R. CLARK, RICHARD W. CLARK, Mortgager LEGAL NOTICES Pub. Anaheim Gazette, Dec. 21, 1951: GRunewald Causes Hard-Time for House Committee WASHINGTON (P) — Henry (The Dutchman) Grunewald refused today to testify to a House committee investigating tax scandals. Grunewald said he was acting on advice of his attorney. "The Dutchman," a mysterious man about Washington, was called before a House Ways and Means subcommittee for questioning as to whether he knows anything about an alleged $500,000 tax fix" abakedown attempt. He and his attorney, William P. Maloney, have been sparring with the committee for days over what circumstances Grunewald would testify. Maloney, a former Justice Department lawyer now in private practice, had insisted Grunewald should not give testimony except in a public hearing. The committee wanted to talk with Grunewald behind closed doors before holding any public session. Dawson, a town in Yukon Territory, Canada, has an average of 75 frost-free days a year.
