CALIFORNIANA — On Dec.
20, 1906, work was begun to close
the gap in the Colorado river levee
which Charles Rockwood had
constructed in October, 1904, to
increase the flow of Colorado river
water into the Imperial valley, and which, after getting out
of control, filled the Salton sea
and threatened to inundate the
entire valley. The crevasse was
sinally closed on Feb. 10, 1907.
Eppe Randolph, Tom Hinds and
H. T. Cory were engineers in
charge of the successful operation.

MEMO—To Keith Murdock, city manager: "Some of the residents in the southwest area of Anaheim are becoming indignant because of the poor condition of S. Walnut St. south of Manchester Blvd. . . It is the "main artery" in and out of a rather large area and it hasn't been improved or worked on in at least 15 years. Recently, the city painted white stripes in the street—nothing else . . . the large bumpy rough spots still remain." . . Can't Anaheim streets be kept in good repair, Mr. Murdock? Hmm-mm-m?
NEWS NUGGETS — Steph Bradford, the civil engineer, is moving his headquarters to Anaheim the first of the year . . . Otto Idso, the packing company manager, has a new suburban home on Acacia St. . . Vic Reudy was planting pansies along the outstanding Anaheimmer of 1851, no better choice could be made than Adolf Schoepe, the guiding genius of the Kwikset company. Not only has he devoted himself to the promotion of his industrial enterprise, but he also has made an outstanding contribution to Anaheim employer-employee relations through a unique profit-sharing plan and many other personal benefits which stemmed from his sincere interest in each member of the Kwikset team, rather than outside prodding. Adolf Schoepe, likewise, has devoted his time unselfishly to civic projects. As president of the Chamber of Commerce, he has worked unceasingly to bring additional payrolls, prosperity and the good things of life, to Anaheim. He and the Kwikset team have taken an active part in community service. It was through Adolf Schoepe that the youth of Anaheim obtained the old La Palma school as a recreation center. Truly, Adolf Schoepe is the Anahelmer of the Year. No other single individual during 1951 has contributed so much to the betterment of the community than he.
Large Aircraft Reported Down In Mountains
NEWHALL, Calif. (P)—Rep of a big plane's crash in the aged Tehachapi mountains ground and air searchers into area today, but they couldn't the supposed wreckage.
Los Angeles and Kern co-sheriff's offices received acco from residents of Gorman Frazier mountain districts, where the two counties join, plane trailing fire as it cross 8000-foot Frazier mountain.
First reports identified it as Air Force C-46. The Air Force such a plane en route for Bakersfield to Albuquerque, N.M., but quickly determined that was safe. Then the sheriff's office received a report that a 6 commercial airliner had crashed. Its information, a recheck developed, apparently came from the same source as the origin.
Despite indications that my rooming rumors had caused flurry of calls, sheriff's place from both counties and the Sea Rescue Service at March Base sent planes up to circle area, and experienced mountain rescue crews were assembled a ground search.

NEWS NUGGETS — Steph Bradford, the civil engineer, is moving his headquarters to Anaheim the first of the year... Otto Idso, the packing company manager, has a new suburban home on Acacia St... Vlc Reudy was planting pansies along the borders of the City park walks when the statue of Madame Helene Modjeska was dedicated as a memento to Anaheim's cultural past. Ralph Modjeska, the Santa Ana architect, was attending Fullerton college at the time, and took part in the dedication of the monument to the memory of his grandmother... That's the monument Waldo Hunter referred to in his col'm t'other night... Al Koenig has passed another of Life's milestones. He's in his eighty-second year... Tony Padilla, the good natured builder, is an Anaheimer who can appreciate a joke—even if it's on him.

Steel Labor Case Goes to Truman In Deadlock
WASHINGTON (UP)—Steel labor negotiations collapsed today after the dispute was referred to President Truman as being in a complete deadlock.
Cyrus S. Ching, federal mediation service director, ended his forts to negotiate a settlement.
He told reporters he was saying the case to the White House as hopeless—leaving it up to president to decide on the next step to try to avert a threat to New Years' Day strike in vital steel industry.
Mr. Truman apparently has no courses to take.
One is to invoke the Taft-Hazley Act, with its provisions set an 80-day court injunction prohibiting a walkout.
This, however, would probably shelve the unsettled steel dispute until March, with the possibility that John L. Lewis may be threatening a nation-wide coal strike then.
His second course would be refer the steel crisis to the W.W. Stabilization board for a recommended settlement.
However, it was considered highly unlikely the board could complete this process before President Philip Murray's January strike deadline.
