CALIFORNIANA—In 1831 Pleo, Juan Bandini and Jose Antonio Carrillo led a revolt and seized the presidio of San Diego as a protest against the failure of Gov. Manuel Victoria to convoke the disputacion (assembly) and also against the exiling of Carrillo and Abel Sterns, et al. The rebel forces marched north and on Dec. 5 engaged Victoria and his soldiers in battle. In the battle of Cahuenga one man was killed on each side and Victoria so severely wounded that he was taken to San Gabriel. On Dec. 6, he entered negotiations that led to his abdication and the calling of the disputacion.

Chamber Secretary Cites Success Of Program to Bring Payrolls Here
Addressing the membership meeting of Anaheim Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, E. W. Moeller, Chamber secretary, pointed out the record success Anaheim’s city administration and Chamber has had in inducing industries to locate here, with the consequent increase in payroll wealth. His remarks follow:
Growth Depends on Industry
“As you well know, this Chamber of Commerce, supported by the City Administration, declared that the future development and prosperity of the community depended on our ability to induce industry to locate here and supplement Anaheim’ citrus economy with diversification of industry with year-round payrolls.
“The best proof of our success in this field is evidenced by the official building permit records which reveal the astounding fact that in the year of 1951 there was completed, or in the process of completion, a total of 467,440 square feet of new industrial plant construction, with 428,340 square feet attributed to new firms and 39,100 square feet to expansion of plants of local industry. This is the banner year for industrial construction in the history of Orange county, placing Anaheim first among the cities of Orange county, industrially speaking.
Increased Electricity Use
“Let's prove the accuracy of this statement: Alex Tamale company is building 13,440 square feet; Robertshaw-Fulton, 50,400 of Class A construction; Daystrom Furniture rental of 12,000 square feet and own building of 102,500 square feet.
"Northrop Aircraft is completing or 47 per cent.
“Louis Hoskins, postmaster, also states that the Post Office shares in the gains as postal income jumped from $115,370 in 1945 to an estimate of $190,000 in 1951, and looks for his greatest gain in 1952 when Robertshaw-Fulton, Daystrom and Northrop get into operation.
Growing School Population
“Now, if you have doubt about the fecundity or fertility of our Anaheim families look what is happening to our schools. In 1945 our elementary school superintendent reported 1493 pupils—at the present time an enrollment of 2255 or 51 per cent gain. Our high school had 969 students in 1945—at present time, the rapid growing enrollment reaches 1277.
“Now, let’s return a few minutes to consideration of statistics on building permits.
“Building Inspector Homer Wallace’s records show total of all building permits issued in past year to October 1951 reached total of $20,910,120. Now, most important is the fact there were permits issued for 1627 dwelling units.
“I submit to you this is one of the most vital points of today’s factual exposition. 1627 units should house another 4500 persons conveniently, but from my observation Anaheim needs more housing; and particularly housing for industrial workers. We need to encourage building of houses the factory worker can afford to buy. We need rentals at a figure a worker with a take home paycheck can afford to pay. We need such housing now for the need is critical. If you doubt this talk to Northrop officials.
Housing May Improve
POINTED PARAGRAPHS — Anaheimers who go to Fullerton tonight to watch Clare Van Hoorebeke’s Anahi Colonists will be pleasantly surprised . . . Johnny Vuksonovich predicts an Anahi victory. He’s the chap who took genial George Jeffreys for four chicken dinners on the Fullerton-Anahi game . . . Kenny Foster gave Mark Stephenson a tough time that night until Anahi started rolling . . . Anaheim’s friendly undertaker, Josh Seale, who is now doing business in Santa Barbara also came into the picture . . . Al Clayes one of Anahi’s greatest athletes of another day can be mighty proud of his boy. He’s a chip off the old block . . . And thanks to Dick Glover, Anahi will be ready. Glover scouted Samohi and knows that Santa Monica counts on two men to beat the Colonists.
NECESSITY — Signals at Orangethorpe and Lemon are a vital necessity. Let’s not wait until someone gets hurt before action is taken on the matter.
NEWS NUGGETS — Beverly Wald and Hubert Moore, Anaheimers, had their cars damaged in different accidents at Santa Ana’s mad-dash corner — Santa Ana blvd., and Flower st. . . Anaheim’s Heavenly Helen Weir is really one of Santa Ana’s Santa’s helpers . . . Lee Long, Arkansas’ ambassador of good will, was in town . . . Al Schnoor, a former Anaheim elevator specialist to the immediate problem of housing factory workers in Anaheim in great numbers. This is the concern of all business and professional men; for the factory worker spends most of his paycheck where he lives; and, finally you may like to know that the assessed valuation has grown from $10,745,425 in 1944-1945 to the astounding figures of $23,280,510 for 1951-52, or a gain of 116 per cent in property value for taxation purposes.
"I stated that based on the above factual data Anaheim population has reached 46,500, or a 55 per cent gain over the official establishment of a t Buena Park would have more objectionable than lishment of one in Los isn’t gambling gambits you bet on quarter h and-buggy hosses on breds?

Increased Electricity Use
"Let's prove the accuracy of this statement: Alex Tamale company is building 13,440 square feet; Robertshaw-Fulton, 50,400 of Class A construction; Daystrom Furniture rental of 12,000 square feet and own building of 102,500 square feet.
Northrop Aircraft is completing its 250,000 square foot plant. Orange county's giant plant.
Expansions are attributed to Anaheim Truck and Transfer Co., Essex Wire Company, Real Gold Citrus Products, P & L Welding and Machine Works, Schultz Tool and Machinery Mfg., Electra Motors, Inc.
For further factual evidence of our growth, note the increase in use of electricity. In 1945 there were 4353 electric meters now 6300, percentage gain of 45 per cent, but in power purchased by city for Edison Power station increased from 15,484,800 KWH to the extraordinary figure of 34,-338,000 KWH for year 1950-51, a whopping increase of 125 per cent in the seven-year period; and that is only part of the story. George Ogikers, superintendent of Municipal Power and Light tells me the estimate for the calendar year is for over 40,000,000 KWH purchased, with Northrop, Robertshaw-Fulton and Daystrom plants not included.
Water Usage Up
"Water usage also grew from 7,500,000 cubic feet to 140,000,-700 cubic feet in the seven-year period."
Southern Counties Gas Company reports the city of Anaheim us meters have gained 1762 since October '45 to October '51

We need rentals at a figure a worker with a take home paycheck can afford to pay. We need such housing now for the need is critical. If you doubt this talk to Northrop officials.
Housing May Improve
"There are some encouraging signs on the horizon. Since 1945, 34 subdivision maps have been approved involving 1279 lots; 868 of these subdivisions have been completed; 64 are in process of completion; 347 have not yet been started.
But even this picture is not too encouraging for there appears no"

COMMENTARY — The Gazetteer has nothing against hossrace gambling. But why didn't the clergy of Orange county raise its voice against the introduction of pari-mutual betting at Frank Vessel's Los Alamitos ranch? When the syndicate that erected Hollywood Park at Inglewood was considering Buena Park as the site of the multi-million dollar racing plant, the clergy became rampant and shouted from the pulpit. The Chambers of Commerce and businessmen of the area also voiced objections to the establishment of a turf club in Orange county. Why didn't the business interest and the churchmen object to the Vessel's project for the improvement of the quarter horse breed? Paul R. Robinson, president of the Los Alamitos Business Mens' ass'n, and Roy Wright, president of the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce appeared before a meeting of the State Horse Racing board and spoke in favor of the meeting at which 90—mind you 90—pari-mutual machines will be in operation. Isn't it logical to assume that the establishment of a turf club at Buena Park would have been no more objectionable than the establishment of one in Los Alamitos? Isn't gambling gambling whether you bet on quarter horses, hoss-and-buggy hosses or thoroughbreds?
NITECAPSULE—Curiosity may have killed the cat, but chances are that the inquisitive feline died happy.
