Trabert Out of Navy for Few Weeks–Tennis
BAINBRIDGE, Md. (AP) — The Navy today released big Tony Trabert for a long vacation so he can play on the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.
The 21-year-old Cincinnati holds the national intercollegiate and clay courts championships. He is expected to be on both the singles and doubles teams for the Davis Cup interzone finals in Australia in December.
Trabert came to the Naval Training Center here Sept. 24 after his summer tennis campaigning. He had been in the reserve and was assigned here for 11 weeks of boot training.
His leave starts Saturday, at the end of his fourth week, and he is expected back about Jan. 1 to complete the other seven weeks.
"I'm lucky," Trabert said. "I think we have a 50-50 chance of bringing back the Davis Cup."
The U.S. team will meet Australia in the challenge round if it wins over Sweden in the interzone finals. Australia now holds the cup and the championship matches will be in Australia soon after the interzone elimination.
Appropriation Bill Cut Five Per Cent
WASHINGTON (AP)—The Senate today debates the $8,025,128,-000 Foreign Aid bill from which its appropriation committee cut five per cent in the amounts voted by the house.
Senator McMahon (D-Conn) and other administration senators said they were disturbed over this cut and would fight it.
JC Track Coaches Decide on Dual Meet for Title
Announcement came yesterday in regard to the Eastern Conference Track Coaches recommendation of the track championships which they decided, in a meeting held recently, to have the championship decided in a dual-meet basis.
Their recommendation was approved by the administrators at a meeting held Tuesday, at Mt. San Antonio junior college.
Following the end of the track season this past spring, a majority of the coaches indicated they favored deciding the title in the all-conference meet as is the custom in most major conferences.
However, Tuesday's recommendation was submitted with the unanimous approval of the coaches.
Baseball coaches of the conference gained a point when the administrators approved their request for a three-round conference schedule, which will begin March 7 and continue until May 27.
Administrators voted to continue charging $1 for general admission football tickets. The price of reserved seats will still be left up to the discretion of each school.
The question of the eligibility of 17-year-old non-high school graduates was tabled, pending a ruling from the state board of education. However, administrators voted to return to World War II rules in regard to veterans of the Korean campaign.
It was announced that the California Junior College Association will submit definite plans in the near future for state championship playoffs in basketball, track and baseball to begin next spring.
Appropriation Bill Cut Five Per Cent
WASHINGTON (P)—The Senate today debates the $8,025,128,000 Foreign Aid bill from which its appropriation committee cut five per cent in the amounts voted by the house.
Senator McMahon (D-Conn) and other administration senators said they were disturbed over this cut and would fight it.
Senator Knowland (R-Callif) replied that any such effort would bring on "a major controversy" and probably lead to proposals for bigger reductions.
Knowland, who serves on the appropriations group, said many members would have preferred slicing ten per cent off the House Bill.
He added that the committee had made a "modest" cut, particularly in view of the House rejection of a House-Senate compromise tax boosting bill.
NEW STYLE WATERMELON
Watermelons with only two or three seeds apiece are being grown at Purdue University's experimental farm near Owensville.
W. B. Ward, extension horticulturist, reported today that commercial seedsmen will offer the "seedless watermelon" seeds next year.
The round melons from eight to 10 pounds a handy size for refrigerators, and Ward says they are of high quality. The reduction of seeds almost to the vanishing point was effected by treating the plant with a chemical compound, colchicine.
