Gazette SPORT Colonist Bee Football Team Opens Defense of Their League Title with Co-Champ Santa Ana Tomorrow at 3 P. Tomorrow on the local high school practice field the Anaheim Bee football team will open defense of the co-league title with Santa Ana, the team they tied for the title with last season's game will start at 3 p.m. The two teams have almost completely different records incurred in their practice season. Saints haven't won a game this year while the local Bee team hasn't lost a contest, yet. Santa Ana really has tackled the tougher competition, tackling such noted powerhouses as Celsior, Long Beach Wilson, Chaffey and Montebello while the locals have done battle with Redlands, Chaffey, Citrus and Corvina. The Chaffey game with the locals ended in a tie, 6-6 while the Saints lost by one point, 12-13, so by that one game the teams should be fairly evenly-matched. The Saints, coached by Johnny Wilson, the regular swimming coach, use the single-wing formation, while the locals use the T-formation under the tutoring of Coach Sam Keith and his assistant, Bill Hunstock. The main threat in the Saints' attack is tailback John McFadden who passes, runs, punts and blocks with the best of the team members. McFadden Is the Ace McFadden is helped in the year are the undefeated Colonist Bee team and they will be going all out, not only to beat Sammy Saint, but to continue their unbeaten record and to get a strangle hold on first place in the league race. The Colonist attack revolves around T-quarterback Al Salaets and left halfback Gayle Herbel. Salaets has been a consistent ground gainer up the middle of the field on his tricky quarterback sneaks, while Herbel moves the team up and down the field by his accurate passing and running attack. Herbel even fools some of the opponents on his fake punts, although he fooled the coach and his teammates several times. Teaming up with Herbel at the other halfback spot is bullet Bill Saints in Poor Shape, but Go Enough to Play The situation over at San Diego this year has truly pathetic, not only for the coaches but for the school just hates to lose a football especially to a Sunset League. The Saints captured the football championship in 1987, the league title the next to Huntington Beach and then have never come close though they did give Fullet couple of close games two three years ago when the The main threat in the Saints' attack is tailback John McFadden who passes, runs, punts and blocks with the best of the team members. McFadden Is the Ace McFadden is helped in the backfield by right halfback Bill Swisshelm and left halfback Dick Fraser. The fullback duties are left up to Pete Norton and this combine, although not having won a game, certainly is one of the tops of the whole league. They are fast, confident, hard runners and above all want that league crown all by themselves this year and not hooked on with someone else. Last year in the dual meet between the two teams the game ended in a 6-6 tie, and the Saints will not only be trying for a solid victory over the locals, but will be trying for their first win of the year, something they all want very badly. Wilson has only one returning letterman on the team, Harry Phillips, the center and defensive linebacker. Returning with Phillips are only three reserves who played in a few Saints games, but didn't make their letter. Since then the Saint hasn't really looked too hot. Two years ago little and the coming Orange High beat Ana for the first time in no moon and many were called the fall of the empire—the ful Santa Ana empire. Won Only Two No, they are no longer there to beat if one expects to take league championship. They now just a member of the team and one that has to stump keep in the top four on the ladder. Last season they won two league games and won the loop race in fourth playthind winner Fullerton, run Newport and third place for Anaheim who beat the Saint to establish quite a distance third spot to fourth. But all good things must go to an end and the Saints feel this is the year for them to up into the top three positions though from some quarters are rated a cinch for the cell Started With 57 They started the season on a large turnout of some 57 players including six returning letters of which only one was a ball player. Thomas J. Halligan of Flint, Mich., head of the Central League (Class A) made the suggestions to a House Monopoly Subcommittee. Under the farm system, a major league club owns or controls minor league teams. One of the purposes is to train and develop young players for later use with the parent big league team. The subcommittee is studying baseball to determine whether some of its operations conflict with anti-trust laws. Halligan suggested putting an eight-year time limit on the reserve clause. This is an arrangement under which a baseball club owns the right to a player's service as long as he stays in the professional ball. Halligan also recommended that all major league broadcasting and telecasting should be stopped if that minor leagues be permitted to negotiate with the sponsors of broadcasts or telecasts of major league games. Several baseball sports writers were scheduled to follow Halligan on the stand. SORTS Opens le with row at 3 P.M. See football team will open the title with last season. The contest yet, such noted powerhouses as Ex-Saints in Poor Shape, but Good Enough to Play The situation over at Santa Ana this year has truly been thetic, not only for the team, coach, but for the school that hates to lose a football game, specially to a Sunset League foe. The Saints captured the CIF football championship in 1945, lost the league title the next season Huntington Beach and since they have never come close, although they did give Fullerton a couple of close games two and three years ago when the highly- Fullerton Junior College Cage Team Starts Official Practice Monday Fullerton junior college's basketball team will officially open practice Monday night in preparation for the defense of their Eastern Conference title and for their Alumni game to be held Wednesday, Nov. 28. The Hornets have been working hard these past few weeks in the Fullerton gym, but it has not really been an official practice. Several players have yet to report to the team, but on the whole the squad has seen several days of practice and for the most part look pretty sharp. Working on the first team unit which the Coach, Alex Omaalev, says is his first team right now, is ex-Anaheim ace Jumpin' Joe Bruce, who will be in the starting lineup at one forward post. Last year Bruce was a second team choice at center, but so far this season he has been playing with the first team and by the style he has shown, he is slated to stay. He can rebound with the best of them, and is definitely one of the roughest off the boards on the whole team. Thompson Now at Forward Teaming up with Bruce at the other forward post is Walt Thompson, who was the teams center last year. He was an all-conference second team choice at that position and was accorded a position on the Compton Tourney top ten. Taking over the center spot is the ex-Montebello ace, Roy Irvin who was an all-CIF second team choice last year. He is 6'6" and combined with the 6'2" of the two forwards, it will give the Hornets one of their tallest teams in recent years. The guards are Jerry Philip, returning letterman from last year's championship team and Charles Holloway, who is still out for football. But Holloway isn't slated for a first team berth, what with little 6' Jimmy Spudich from Detroit, Michigan, who last year was an all-city first team member. Shining Light Spudich is really the shining light of the team. He can set shot with the best of any 'em and on set-ups and drive-ins, he truly is un-erroring. He is a real team player as well and is certainly one of the great players to come to Fullerton in a long time. Yesterday t.h.e announcement came that the Hornets will play Bakersfield in the first round of the annual Charley Tourney which gets under way Dec. 11-15. In the other first round games Santa Ana has the honor to go up against Pasadena, Orange Coast vs. E. L.A.; Riverside tangles with San Monica; Mt. Lanky Fred Snyder of Loyola at Los Angeles, who was grabbing passes at a record pace a week ago, had a rough time Sunday against Santa Clara. Although he caught 11 the previous week, Snyder was able to snare only two passes for a season's total of 24. Dewey McConnell of Wyoming picked off seven against Colorado A & M and now has 22. Dave Mann of Oregon State maintained a substantial lead in punting, booming five for an average of 45 yards Saturday to make his season's average 46.5 yards. His closest competitor is Harry Agannis of Boston University with 43.8. Ed Dawson of the University of San Francisco is third in punting with a 43.2 average and UCLA's Bob Moore tenth with 41. Joe Watts of Furman intercepted one pass for a season total of six and runbacks of 124 yards. George Shaw of Oregon and Bill Snyder of West Virginia nabbed two enemy tosses each to tie Watts at six interceptions, but their returns have not been as long. Hill Prince Rider Under Tough Quiz NEW YORK UP—Why did Hill Prince, America's No. 1 horse of 1950, lose the $50,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup by a nose to Counterpoint? Casey Hayes, trainer of C. T. Chenery's four-year-old, said after Saturday's Belmont Park race: "Eddie Arcaro thought he was going to play around with those horses, then turn him loose to win as he pleased. He kept a tight rein on the horse when the Prince showed he wanted to run. Eddie waited too long." To which Jockey Eddie replied today: John Bergen and Bill Miller, the other, Steve Andrake, reportto the team later in the season. The back was Dick Bennett, a heavy hurdler on the track team and one who likes to run, but not get hit. Then things, unfortunate things, gone to happen around the camsion. First two were ruled out of competition due to low grades, then injuries began to pile up at exceedingly fast rate, and their player with which they had planed to revolve their attack around. Paralta, picked up and left for Anaheim to leam up with his other. For The Age Unit Steve Andrake, letterman end, had to stop coming out for the quad because he was 19, the CIF Limits. Then Dave Sitton, Tony Smith and Leon Karr were ruled eligible because of citizenship incidences. More recently halfback Jack Mick injured a knee in the safety game and was not out to actice for several days. He has turned to the squad, but has got back up to the condition was in before he was hurt. The Saints have lost to Excelr, 0-6; Long Beach Wilson, 13Chaffey, 6-28; and Montebello week, 0-27. However, the pice is not too black; that is, not ck enough to be taken too lightbecause those Saints seem to take a way of getting "up" for the hockey games, and after the taking Anaheim gave them last year, they aren't going to be in a pleasant mood. The La Venta people of SouthMexico were forerunners of Mayas. Eddie waited too long." To which Jockey Eddie replied today: "If I had to do it over again, I'd ride him the same way. The way the race came up, I don't know what I could have done differently." Arcaro didn't blame Hayes "for getting mad, especially when you blow all that money by a head." George Grune, a halfback on the Duke football team, is also editor of the school literary magazine, "The Archive." Sandy Ross, who copped the USGA Amateur championship in 1932, was the only Canadian ever to win the title. The University of Arizona has had 17 football coaches since it began competing on the gridiron in 1899. Joe Luchl, newly acquired player on the New York Knickerbockers, won four varsity cage letters at the University of Cincinnati. Phone 4618 ERMISCH "MY CLEANER" Branch: 250 W. Center Plant: 117 W. Cypress Anaheim Mann Defeats Tom Jefferson, 24-12 Horace Mann's "A" team made it a clean sweep of the first round Tuesday by trimming Thomas Jefferson's "A" team 24 to 12. As before, it was Bill Larson, Lewis Acosta, and Robert Gadoy, who were the "big guns" of Mann's attack. Bill Larson started the game rolling with a beautiful pass to Robert Gadoy for a quick TD, and Mann was off to a 6 to 0 lead. Gary Wardin quickly evened things up though, as he took the kickoff all the way back for a touchdown, tying the score at 6 to 6. It was not until about two minutes remained in the first half that another score was made. Bill Larson circled end for 25 yards for the TD which put Mann out in front to stay. In the second half, it was Bill Larson who again started off the scoring. He tossed a pass to end Robert Gadoy, who made a beautiful catch on the Jefferson ten yard line and then raced over for the TD. Lewis Acosta passed to Robert Gadoy for the last Mann TD. Gary Wardin ended the scoring on an end run, which accounted for the final Jefferson TD. George Washington's "B" team handed Benjamin Franklin its third straight loss yesterday as they whipped them 12 to 8. Larry White scored on an end run to put Washington ahead 8 to 0. But this lead was short lived as Mike Rice evened up the score for Franklin with a line plunge. There was no more scoring until the first play of the first half. 2 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA League Opener For Oilers Postponed Today's scheduled Sunset League Cee game between Fullerton and Huntington Beach has been postponed until Friday afternoon because of the Orange Coast-San Bernard JC game tonight at Huntington Beach. The game Friday will be the league opener for both schools while Newport Gees are playing at Orange today and Anaheim's Gees went to Santa Ana. Last year Fullerton was the bowhouse of the league when they raced through the league competition with only six points being scored upon them and their coach was Ed Goddard, now coach at Huntington Beach. Wisconsin won the first Western Conference gridiron title in 1896. The University of Chicago captured the first baseball title the same year. Old 'Case' Will Be Back in New York LOS ANGELES (AP) — If Mrs. Casey Stengel has her way, the manager of the New York Yankees will stay in baseball next year and try to make it four world championships in a row. "Casey hasn't conferred with the Yankee officials yet about his future plans," Mrs. Stengel said, "but I feel he wants to continue in baseball and this is the first time I agree with him. For the last 10 years I've urged Casey, even threatened him, to quit baseball. He has everything he wants and baseball never can bring him the financial satisfaction he can realize in other, less demanding fields. But now I think he owes it to baseball to go on. Baseball needs him more than I do." Lt. General Franklin A. Hart, commandant of the Marine Corps schools, Quantico, Va., was a member of the varsity football, track and soccer teams at Auburn from 1911 through 1914.
