Expert Explains Oak Tree Needs Few home owners realize that oak trees need careful attention if they are to remain healthy and decorative, says plant pathologist H. N. Hansen, University of California College of Agriculture. Oaks thrive on well drained soils. This should be the guide in landscaping around oak trees. Excess watering around oaks is bad business. Normally the rainy season takes care of their water needs. The rest of the year the roots find necessary water in below ground reservoirs. Soils should not be added under oaks. Any new soil around the tree trunks foster wood rotting fungi which can quickly kill the trees. Keeping the natural drainage and leaf deposits under the trees, and excess water and soil away are the best insurance for long-lived trees. If grading or leveling of lots near oak trees is necessary a retaining wall two or three feet from the trunk will keep soil from the base of the tree. Hansen warns that pavement or plantings under oaks can also weaken and kill the trees. Scholarship Award To Mary Whitney Mary E. Whitney, 522 S. The leaves of this tree are scale-like and the branchlets are arranged somewhat in a fan, making for confusion between this species and the Arbor-vitaes, which have their leaves and branchlets arranged in a similar but more pronounced manner. Incense Cedar is listed as a small tree under cultivation, twenty to thirty feet tall, but in one wild it will frequently grow well over 100 feet tall and is said to reach 200 feet, a really respectable forest tree. Bark is cinnamon red. Form of the young tree, such as would be the case in most trees under cultivation, is a fairly symmetrical narrow pyramid of bright green. A well-drained soil and open situation is needed. Watering should be thorough and at regular intervals to insure maximum symmetry. One application of commercial fertilizer in spring is sufficient. Incense Cedars are satisfactory lawn trees, where their pyramidal symmetry make them good for outdoor Christmas trees, though they do lack the spreading lower branches usually thought of as belonging to a Christmas tree. They also make good trees for a hedge effect and have been used as street trees. For Health, Eat California Fruit held Nov. 9 and 10 at Santa Barbara college. A BIT OF NORWAY—Built with a craftsman's attention to detail by its owner, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Julius J. Krogen at 809 North Janss street is an authentic copy of the French Normandy type of dwelling that has been popular in Scandinavian countries for centuries. Krogen Home is Transplanted Example Of Viking Taste and Decorative Skills Mr. and Mrs. Julius J. Krogen, native to Anaheim for the past twenty years but Norwegian by birth, have created a home here that is a shining example of the remarkable taste and skill in decoration that has been inherent in a hardy race since the days of the Vikings. Located at 809 North Janss st. amid a picturesque cluster of Scandinavian type homes built by Julius Krogen as a pastime since he retired from the building business several years ago, the dwellings of typical French Normandy design stands rugged and rustic, already charmingly mellowed by the elements. The long, low house, nestled behind protective shrubbery on a 75 x 120 foot lot combines redwood boards and bats with stucco to form a practically weatherproof exterior made especially pleasing to the eye with touches of flagstone and brick. The roof made of split shakes topped with a wrought iron weathervane has gathered a coating of green moss on its north side, a condition usually peculiar to homes of this type in the old country. 1800 Square Feet The spacious interior offers a perfect setting for antique treasures gathered from every part of the Scandinavian countries by Mrs. Krogen on her periodic visits there. It was Julius Krogen who designed the handsome formal living room, the adjoining separate dining room, compact kitchen, two bedrooms, and the typically Norwegian fireplace room, and it was Mrs. Krogen who arranged their quaint authentic decoration. Ann Krogen's name is synonymous with superior home decoration in Anaheim for she owns and operates the highly successful Bluebird Drapery and Decorating Business. designed the handsome formal living room, the adjoining separate dining room, compact kitchen, two bedrooms, and the typically Norwegian fireplace room, and it was Mrs. Krogen who arranged their quaint authentic decoration. Ann Krogen's name is synonymous with superior home decoration in Anaheim for she owns and operates the highly successful Bluebird Drapery and Decorating Shop here. It is therefore especially interesting to see the way in which she has chosen to decorate her own home. The main part of the house exudes luxurious, restful comfort, a background for truly gracious living. This is brought about by superb wall and window treatment. By deep piled wait-take-out carpeting, and by excellent pieces of mahogany furniture. A love and understanding of antiques reveals itself everywhere from the massive hand carved piano that was brought around Cape Horn in 1876 to the valuable hand hammered silver tureen which was overlooked by the Germans during their occupation days in Norway. Afterthought After the house was completed the Krogens, who like so many of their clan enjoy entertaining informally, decided to convert a large open patio at the back of the house into a sort of game room centered about a huge fieldstone fireplace. Today, this after thought is the most lived-in room of the house, and a veritable treasure trove of items native to Norway.
