BUILDING FAX By CARL MEYER Sec., Orange Co. Bldrs. Assn. For a modern, efficient kitchen today, it is wise to plan well. Since much of the family's time—not to mention the homemakers'—is spent in this room, a carefully planned kitchen means greater ease, less work. The trend today is toward the smaller kitchen An oblong kitchen is more economical of floor space than a square one and saves the housewife many steps during the course of the day. An average family finds that 90 to 108 square feet of floor space is satisfactory in the kitchen. However, the size should be determined for the specific family by these factors: First, the number of activities that will be necessary in the kitchen; second, size of the large pieces of equipment, such as stove, refrigerator, sink, etc., third, the number of doors in the rooms; and fourth, to a certain extent, the fuel for cooking. Function number one of the kitchen is of course, a place where food is prepared. But often times this room is called on to serve as a dining room, laundry, or playroom for small children. These additional uses must be considered in planning the kitchen. Minimum number of doors entering on the kitchen are two—dining room or lying room and back porch or rear entry. It is not unusual for a kitchen to have two or three more entrys, to hall, pantry, etc. Through poor planning a kitchen is often larger than need be in order to accommodate all the necessary doors. Relation of the kitchen to other centers of activity — where the home-maker works is another consideration. The laundry room or service porch should be accessible as well as the phone and dining room. Is the kitchen to be built to have the sun in the morning afternoon? Nurserymen say Orange County Nursery Association The common white Calla isn't a lily at all, but a moth of the Arum family, along with startling array of presently lar tropical plants—Diffenbilt Philodendron, Pothos, Monk Caladium, Anthunium, etc. Itists now classify the plant call Calla lilies under the Zantedeschia, except the Calla, which in the genus Argyranthemum. In addition to the white Calla a pure yellow species from the American Transvaal and a pink siphon from the Natal are offered yellow Calla, Zantedeschia omana, is almost as easily grown the white and is a fine pot object. The laundry room or service porch should be accessible as well as the phone and dining room. Is the kitchen to be built to have the sun in the morning, afternoon, or all day? What will the windows overlook? If there are children in the home will the sandbox, or swing be in view of the kitchen window? The kitchen floor should be durable, comfortable to walk and stand on, smooth but not slippery, easy to clean, impervious to grease and water, and attractive in color. Walls are best covered with smooth, hard plaster with a coat of good oil paint. This type paint stands many washings with lukewarm suds made from neutral soap. The wall may easily be renewed with a fresh coat of paint. Woodwork in the kitchen should be kept at a minimum. The baseboard should be designed to shed dirt, not, as is often the case, to collect it. Color in the kitchen depends on the lighting of the room and exposure. Light tans and greys, with yellow trim to brighten, are neutral shades and resist soiling but reflect light. Need an Electrician? JOSEPH A. Garden - Size Pool Solves Swimming Problem on Ordinary City - Size Lot By JOAN S. WHITE "If only we had a swimming pool—" has been the sigh of many an Anaheim family, but one look at the narrow confines of most city lots and another at the high cost of the usual pool construction tends to shelve that idea once and for all. Not so with the Donald Bates family who live in the fashionable Evelyn dr. section. Their rambling ranch type house, set on the front fringe of a 70x105 foot lot left precious little backyard space, but they decided that by telescoping a pool to fit their requirements, they could have not only the longed-for pool, but an enclosed lanai to help them enjoy it. The result is an oblong pool which measures 12x16 feet, four feet deep. It allows ample room for four-year-old Donna Lynn to learn to swim, and for not-so-enervetic adults to get in a surprising number of strokes by circling the pool. Visitors are irresistibly drawn to this small expanse of water which appears a deep blue because of the aqua paint used in the cement from which the pool is made and the background fence which is reflected in the water. A wide tile ledge on all four sides has been designed for lounging. For economy's sake, the cement sides of the pool were poured straight up and down and a simple drain was installed in the pool floor. A concealed pump quickly empties the pool about every two weeks, and although the water is chlorinated, it is successfully used to irrigate lawn and flowers. Mr. Bates, general manager of the Vista Furniture Co. here in Anaheim, estimates that the pool can be duplicated for well under five hundred dollars. The Lanai It is fun to watch folks swim, and the sport usually works up an appetite. The lanai at the Bates home accommodates both forms of activity. It started as an open patio but wind and flies interfered with some of its comfort. The lanai is now completely enclosed. The house forms three walls and the fourth, made of sliding glass panels, affords an excellent view of the pool. For maxi-canvas because no puddles when the swimmer sits down. Barbecue The barbecue is used round, and comes Christmas will find the holiday turkey ing on its revolving spit. A picturesque addition to lanai, it is equipped with a fireplace with a removable and various wrought iron sories to help with cooking esses. On one side is a wire for storage and the other for barbecue equipment. A bin on wheels facilitates plaining of the fuel supply. The spathe remains yellow a couple weeks and then turns green, coming closed and thickened as seeds develop. Leaves are white spotted. The pink Calla seems not so firmly handled as the other two. Color and size of the spathe varies according to local conditions. The plants do not seem to withstand the ravages of snails and bugs as well as the white or yellow species. The Black Calla lily is offered in a novelty. The spathe is a deep violet black red. Its principal downback is the odor, like that of ivory. It is a native of Palestine and is sometimes known as Solomon's lily. It is easily grown in artificial shade and readily naturalizes.
