Nurserymen say...
by
Orange County Nurserymen's Association
With the ever-present threat of acute water shortages in this semi-desert climate, it is well for the gardener to consider shrubs and trees which will survive under such conditions, and at the same time will not look "weedy." Here are a few natives and others that require very little water other than the natural rainfall to maintain their full luxuriance. Most of them are averse to excessive fertilizing so there is further saving in this—they're good for the lazy man's garden. Some like moderate watering in the summer, but others resent any extra watering—they should be watered deeply early in the year if rainfall is lacking then, but not much during summer.
Several of the Ceanothus species, or California Lilacs, are fine garden shrubs. Colors of the flowers range from white to deep blue, with different species growing from two to fifteen feet tall.

BUILDING FAX

A firm foundation is the only kind of foundation to have for your home. That is the kind you want. It is the kind you can arrange to get.
Naturally you, as the home builder, do not plan to inspect personally the laying of the foundation for your home. Oh, sure, it's fun, but it's also a bit of a science, a skill; building a foundation for your home is a job. However, you can help.
Here's how: by recognizing that a solid foundation is indispensable to the successful completion of your new house. Realizing that fact you will question your architect and your general contractor about necessary decisions which will result in the best possible foundation for your house.
For instance, will your house be so located on property as to take advantage of sloping ground so that run-off water will flow away from, rather than toward, the building; will it be advisable to spend a little more money in order to waterproof the foundation against moisture; has ample provision been made to carry rain water from the roof and away.
Constructing Large Home Style, Ranch-Type Living
By JOAN S. WHITE
Here is a house that kids will love home to. And whether they come in wearing boots, muddy from the surrounding 12-acre orange grove, in jeans from riding, in swim suits from the pool, and Mrs. Ted Dinkler want their four youngsters and their friends to feel welcome and perfectly comfortable.
The basic building plan calls for three thousand square feet built on a Us-shaped plan to enclose a patio on three sides and to permit easy accessibility to every room of the house from the out-doors. It is to be a rambling bench style dwelling, fully equipped for country living.
Stream Come True
While living at this same address, 8262 Rio Vista Road, the sinkers have been planning this house for the past ten years. When they were ready to build, they simply had the old house picked up and set to one side, and the new one was started where the other one used to be.
The new house is built on a cedent slab which, in the three bedrooms, sewing room, "family room," kitchen and two baths and half, will be covered with asphalt tile. Parquet oak floorings will be used in the birch-paneled living room and separate dining room.
Ted Dinkler, whose extensive range acreage classifies him as rancher, is master of several other trades as well as his installation of radiant heating in the door will prove. A partial basement accommodates the heating equipment which is regulated by two thermostats. The control mechanism compensates for changes of temperature either indoors or out.
wall, food can be passed conveniently to the dining space in this family room. That is, if the food is not being cooked at one of the three open fireplaces; that the house contains. The family room fireplace is of generous proportions with a raised brick hearth, a built-in Early American latch for a bean pot or tea kettle, and revolving spits for roasting.
An open beam ceiling and knotty pine paneling make this big room very attractive, and the two built-in bunks that will double as davenports are novel innovations in utility.
