Trans-Continental Microwave System In Service Today
NEW YORK CP—In a historic event in communications, a $40,000,000 microwave radio beam system spanning the continent goes into operation for long distance telephone service today.
Telephone calls—and later network television will travel through the air on invisible, finely focused microwave radio beams relayed from horizon to horizon by 107 towers spaced about 30 miles apart.
A group of notables gathered for an opening ceremony (about 10 a.m. EST) at the headquarters of the long lines department of the American Telephone and Telegraph co., which built the electronic communications superhighway.
The towers, some of steel and some of concrete, stretch across the continent from New York through Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo, Chicago, Davenport and Des Moines, Ia., Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City and San Francisco.
Field, 901 N. Helena, at 840 N. Resh st., for $9000; the other to Williams and Vary, contractors, for $12,000 at 524 Sherwood dr.
Miscellaneous permits issued, amounted to $5000.

MORE ABOUT... A.U. School (Continued from Page 1)
well-known name—the city engineering department has requested the school to donate seven rectangular property along Citron and Bycrowlea from Cypress through Torrance in order that the city may widen the roads in accordance with nearby city street improvement project. Appraisals of the cost of removing the fence alone was over $900. That was without mentioning the cost of pulling down trees, digging out pipe and putting in a euro. The school board is debating the decision of going ahead and spending the money to do this as the city requests—or, of donating the property to the city with instructions of doing what they wish with it, which of course means that the city would have to spend the money, not the school district.
SANTA OLAUS?—Fire Chief Ed Stringer found neither as he peered down this incinerator chimney at 400 N. roof of the garage below had already been quickly exited.

McArthur Inquiry Group Won't Make Any Final Report
WASHINGTON (AP)—The Senate's McArthur inquiry committee voted 20 to 3 today against making any report on its two months of hearings.
Charman Russell (D-Ga.) told reporters the majority feeling was that any report at this time on the firing of Gen. Douglas MacArthur would only "revive bitter controversy at a critical period in the Korean peace talks."
However, it was decided to let individual members file a statement of their views to be included in the hearing record to be transmitted later to the Senate.
This apparently would give a group of Republicans a chance to join in a tentative report they have prepared criticizing Truman administration foreign policies in the Far East since the 1945 Yalta conference.

Optimistic of Early Rising Youth Center
Members of the Anaheim Optimist club were even more optimistic today.
The boys' clubhouse they are building, with community aid, to serve the youth of Anaheim is one step nearer completion. One hundred and seventy pounds per square of roofing paper was mopped into place by a combined crew of Optimists and Consolidated roofers early this week thanks to Ivan Elimore, the 400 square feet or roo, who was covered at considerable less than cost, saving the Optimists several hundred dollars.
The job was supervised by Mr. Ellmore and his own experienced roofing crew, laying paper with two Optimists getting into the act, Building Chairman Oscar Leeb carried up the "hot stuff," while President Harwood Larson filled in doing odd jobs.
Hugh Kelsey of Kelsey Sheet Metal is another whose generosity deserves recognition. Every bit of sheet metal needed on the job has been donated by the Kelseys. Roof flashing, gravel guards, rain gutters, down spouts and roof ventilators were all made to specifications and installed as needed.
The past week end saw most of the steel sash windows installed. This is another sizeable gift coming from the Fulerton concern of John Potts, Inc., manufacturers of Feenstra windows. They presented the youth activity and scouting center with half of the necessary windows. Hafer and Mason are already making ready for heating installations that their concern is contributing.

EAST GERMANY HARBORS
REAL RATS, TOO
BERLIN (UP)—East Germany is a trap-less paradise for mice.
Communist state planners forgot to include mouse traps in their economic plan, so none are being made. There are not enough old ones left to combat the rodents effectively. Millions of mice are busily gnawing. So what can be done?
"Keep cats" is the best advice the communist farmers' association can give at the moment.
Long Distance service is faster when you call by number
You'll find your Long Distance Operator can put your call through much quicker if you give her the out-of-town number you want...rather than just the name and address. That way, you see, you won't have to wait for her to get the number from "Information" in the town you're calling. So why not start a Long Distance list...by jotting down the number when the operator reports it to you.
look am up-jot am down-then call
You know, it's awfully easy to get telephone numbers "turned around" in your head. So to get the right number, it's a good idea to look it up in the telephone book...jot it down on a slip of paper...then make your call.
