For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... The Lord will give strength unto his people: — Psa. 29:11. CALIFORNIANA — Sixty-five years ago, the City of Glendale was incorporated. It is located on the site of Rancho San Rafael, first land grant in California. On October 20, 1784, the grant was made by Gov. Pedro Fagus to Jose Maria Verdugo. Glendale dates back to the partition of the rancho in 1870 to 28 individuals and was founded by Capt. C. E. Thom and Judge Erskine M. Ross. QUICKIES—No, we didn't overlook Guy Ledbetter's little Olinda schoolhouse which graduated three scholars this year ... It was a tough pill for City Attorney Preston Turner to swallow when Fullerton legally annexed the shoestring strip last week. It ended a long drawnout court squabble ... Noel Sweeney is having his troubles. He's looking for a coaching job, waiting for the stork, and has a sore arm that keeps him from play. It's California Day At Wimbledon LONDON (UP)—Officials of the all-England tennis championships opening at Wimbledon Monday gave Uncle Sam's gals the first seven seeded positions. Louise Brough of Beverly Hills, who has won the singles title the last three years, seeded No. 1 in defense of her singles, mixed and women's doubles titles. Seeded next in order are Mrs. Margaret Osborne duPont of Wilmington, Del., U.S. titleholder; Doris Hart, Coral Gables, Fla.; Shirley Fry, Akron, O.; Beverly Baker, Santa Monica, Calif.; Mrs. Pat Canning Todd, La Jolla, Calif., and Nancy Chafoe, Ventura, Calif. Frank Sedgman, Australia's Davis cup ace, was seeded No. 1 and Budge Patty, defending champion from Los Angeles, No. 4. Angels Lose (continued from Page 2) and enabled them to retain their third-place tie with Oakland's likewise victorious team. The Angels scored in the second inning when Max West led off with a double, moved up as Joe Gordon booted Les Layton's grounder and scored on Leon Brinkoff's fly. Chuck Conners lead-off double produced another Angel tally in the fourth scoring on Layton's ANNOUNCEMENTS Death Notices COLLINS, MARY ELLEN—of 550 S. Clementine, died Monday, June 18, 1951, age 87 years. Survived by her husband; two daughters; three sons; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. It was a tough pill for City Attorney Preston Turner to swallow when Fullerton legally annexed the shoestring strip last week. It ended a long drawnout court squabble... Noel Sweeney is having his troubles. He's looking for a coaching job, waiting for the stork, and has a sore arm that keeps him from playing softball... Freddie King, former Anaheim milkman, is making good as a lifesaver. Last week he pulled a woman out of a burning building. He raced the stork to the hospital when he took an expectant Buena Park mother to the maternity ward in nothing flat... Ponce de Leon may not have found the fountain of youth, but Edwin (Bud) Tyreman swears that Don Maxson has... FACTUALLY—Orange county's dairy industry is second in importance to citrus according to Dr. Clarence Runney. There are 28,000 dairy cows on 160 farms in the county. The $15,000,000 industry employs about 1400 men. LINE-O-TYPE—E. E. Turner is establishing a model chicken ranch west of Anaheim. Bruce Martin and Herman Lenz have planted two 15-acre experimental plots to a new fast-growing snap bean variety. Heavy April showers didn't bring May flowers, but damaged Orange county's strawberry crop. Those same rains more than doubled the Santa Barbara bean crop, we're told. It's as Mike McGonigle said: "One man's good fortune may be another's tough luck." Avocado shipments have already surpassed the 1950 mark... The Angels scored in the second inning when Max West led off with a double, moved up as Joe Gordon booted Les Layton's grounder and scored on Leon Brinkoff's fly. Chuck Conners lead-off double produced another Angel tally in the fourth, scoring on Layton's fly. The Solons cashed two runs in the second on a walk to Joe Marty, infield hits by Herm Reich and Gordon, a fly to center by Keltner and a single to right by pitcher Walter Clough. Clough went the distance giving up only seven hits, three runs, two free passes to first and struck out one. The Angel's top rookie, Fred Baczewski started, but was lifted in the eighth for a pinch hitter. He had given up six hits, three runs, walked four and struck out four, high for the evening. Bill Moisan finished for the Angels and was charged with three hits, two runs, both earned and no strike-outs. In games tonight Pinky Woods (9-5) will go for Hollywood and will be opposed by Lyman Linde (7-6) Portland chucker. Woods is 1-1 against the visitors after whitewashing 'em last week while Linde is 1-0. Bailey (7-5) will chuck for Oakland against the strike king of the loop, red-haired Sad Sam Jones (9-4). Sacramento will send Elliott (8-7) against the Angel's Lade (1-0). If Seattle has found a way to get to San Francisco they will send Calvert (2-0) against the Seal's Burdette (6-5). Paxton deserves a posy for his outstanding scout work. Nice going, nice guy... He has really done an outstanding job in fielding a winning team. NEWSNOTES — Alpha Beta, they tell me, is figuring on consolidating its two Anaheim stores and making a super super market. Vie started at the city park as the pansy settler-outer and he knows from experience how a little bit of color can liven up the scene. Good going, Victor...
