French Moroccan Visits Anaheim To Learn Local Citrus Methods
Here to learn citrus culture methods in Anaheim, is 24 year old Michel Archaimbault from French Morocco in North Africa.
He is one of a number of foreign exchange farmers who are now in the United States, learning American ways and modern farming methods. Brought here by ECA funds, the young farmers were located by the Extension Service on farms and orchards where both family life and farming operations can be experienced by them.
Michel is presently sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Korn, citrus grower of Anaheim, until July 22, when he will be transferred to another county for varied experience on another farm. He expects to take an agricultural short course in October; a final week with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., in December and return to his base of farming near Casa Blanca, Morocco, where he is a foreman on a large citrus and peanut plantation of 2500 acres.
He was brought to Mr. Korn's ranch by Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg who made him feel much at home by citing his observations of citrus production in Morocco when traveling through North Africa in the early thirties.
The Farm Advisor has another young French farmer to place in Orange county on July 22. Any citrus grower interested in sponsoring such work till the middle of September is invited to contact Mr. Wahlberg at 1104 W. 8th St. Santa Ana, or telephone him for further information.

Witness Identifies Walker as Assailant In Second Crime
RIVERSIDE (F)—A prosecution witness today identified Lawrence J. Walker, negro Air Force sergeant, as a man who beat him and assaulted his woman companion.
Walker, 20, is on trial on charges of murdering Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cook, 19-year-old couple, last March 26, and raping Mrs. Betty Maund, 22, of Riverside, in a park here Feb. 24.
Sergeant James Hicks, 23, who was Mrs. Maud's escort, pointed out Walker in the courtroom today and said "I'm quite sure it was Set Walker's."
Of Testimony
LOS ANGELES (P)—A Federal jury deliberating the tax case of Mickey Cohen today asked for a reading of the testimony of a big-time Florida bookmaker.
The jurors informed U. S. Judge Ben Harrison they wanted to hear again what John O'Rourke, a government witness, had to say about his transactions by telephone with Cohen.
O'Rourke was an important witness in the government's attempt to show that Cohen evaded income taxes in the amount of $156,123 for the years 1946, 1947 and 1948. The West Palm Beach betting commissioner said he quit doing business with Cohen after losing more than $83,000 to him in two years.
Cohen asserted his winnings from O'Rourke were only $16,000 or $18,000.
Cohen, charged with failing to account for all his income and with making false statements regarding his net worth, has denied all along that he ever cheated the government out of a nickel.
Cohen predicted he would be convicted.
The jury got the case late yesterday afternoon and deliberated until 9 p.m. They were locked up for the night without reaching a decision.
The evidence wound up with a prosecutor's charge that some defense witnesses committed perjury.
Assistant U. S. Attorney Ray Kinnison said, in closing arguments, that Cohen's story of borrowing huge sums during 1946, 1947 and 1948 was a cover-up for his huge gambling take.
"Practically none of this income was actually borrowed," said Kinnison. "In effect, Cohen caused people to commit perjury by testifying that they had loaned him money."
Defense attorney Leo Silverstein said the government's case was "too complicated for ordinary people to understand." He said the federal prosecutors had failed to show that Cohen's claim of having borrowed $172,000 during the three-year period was greatest single advance in California citrus products going to push Florida frozen canned citrus items right off map here in Southern California and end, once and for all, fantastic sight of Southside homemakers ignoring super California citrus products those of Florida."
With this statement, Harvey Lynn, president of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, told announced one of the most important advances in Southern California citrus history in years... the marketing of processed citrus juice and concentrates under the Sunkist label.
"No longer will homemakers have to be satisfied with product shipped from the other side of nation, when California citrus furnishes the highest quality products in the world, as well as making an integral part of our state economy," Lynn said.
"The growers of the California Fruit Growers Exchange feel end should be put to this condition once and for all, with the greatest and most aggressive manufacturing and merchandising sales promotion campaign in citrus history. Two hundred thousand Southern Californians are employed in producing our $175 million annual citrus crop, which is the largest single agriculture crop in this area. Over $58 million has been spent in advertising California citrus by the California Fruit Growers Exchange. This has made our fresh fruit the most priced in the nation, and the new Sunkist frozen concentrates and juices will enjoy the same high standards."
"The creation of new processes citrus products will bring Southern California thousands of new jobs, open up and expand new foreign markets, widen the national consumption of both fresh and processed citrus, make possible to broaden our present program of service to the Army Forces and to the schools, and in general make an invaluable contribution to the economical arrows."
Maund's escort, pointed out Walker in the courtroom today and said "I'm quite sure it was Sgt. Walker."
Hicks said Walker ordered him out of Hicks' car, hit him with a gun and hit him again when he was on the ground. Hicks said he heard Walker struggling with Mrs. Maund and heard her say: "Don't hurt me, please; don't hurt me."

Defense attorney Leo Silverstein said the government's case was "too complicated for ordinary people to understand." He said the federal prosecutors had failed to show that Cohen's claim of having borrowed $172,000 during the three-year period was false.
If convicted on all four counts in the indictment, Cohen would be subject to a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $40,-000.
His wife, Lavonne, was originally a defendant in the case for having signed joint returns. But the government dropped its case against her, saying it didn't live up to expectations.

confidential posts during World War Two.
In bitterly condemning the Yalta agreement, Hurley said Roosevelt "was already a sick man at Yalta."
Hurley assailed Acheson's statement, in a State Department 1949 white paper on China, that at the time of the Yalta agreement it was feared that an assault on Japan's home islands would cost up to one million American casualties.
"The fear expressed by Secretary Acheson in my opinion did not exist," said Hurley, "but the secretary expressed both moral and physical fear."
At the time of Yalta, he said, America was in a position "to speak the only language the communists understand, the language of power. The president of the United States at Yalta was in command of the greatest land, Navy and Air Force ever assembled on earth."
