Track 'Stability' Bill Sidetracked
SACRAMENTO UP—Northern California racing interests have succeeded in killing a Southern California-sponsored measure to put "stability" into the handling of charity day receipts.
The Senate Governmental Efficiency committee last night tabled the bill of Assemblyman A. I. Stewart (R-Pasadena).
It would have required between three and five charity days each track, instead of any number up to five, as at present. And it would have given the Horse Racing board control over what charitable organizations would be eligible to benefit from racing.
Former State Senator Ralph Swing of San Bernardino supported the measure as a spokesman for Santa Anita track. He said it would give "stability" to several Southern California charities "dependent on this source of revenue instead of passing the hat." Hollywood Park supported it also.
Spokesmen for Golden Gate fields and Bay Meadows argued the bill was too restrictive.
The committee tabled the bill on the motion of Senator Hugh M. Burns (D.-Fresno).
