The majority of contractors are responsible business men who value their reputation and standing in the community. They expect to remain in business and value highly the good will and friendship of owners for whom they have built homes. The owner who is fair and equitable in his dealings with a contractor will usually find that the contractor will go more than half way with him. An owner who is fair and equitable will very seldom have anything to regret for having built a home. He selects a contractor because of the functions that a contractor performs and he expects to pay for the work that is performed. These reasons for retaining a contractor are: 1. To obtain the benefit of his experience, knowledge and supervision. Some owners seem to think that houses just grow on the lot; unfortunately some do just that. However, good structures do not harm. The responsible one that the best of materials they can buy and the best of labor he can employ still leaves no desire. However, if they are grown in the right places where the litter is not so important, they are among the showiest of trees, with their immense masses of golden yellow in spring. Acacias are usually upright, bushy, and more or less symmetrical in form. Leaves of some kinds are finely bipinnate and feathery, while others have the leaf stalks or petioles, broadened into leaf-like structures, as in the Black Acacia. Sometimes both kinds of structures appear on the same tree. Acacias will grow in a wide variety of soils, even adobe or clay, but are averse to too much water. Native to climates similar to ours, they thrive without much attention once started. Acacia baileyana is perhaps the most popular species here. It forms a rounded mass of gray-green to 15-20 feet height, with finely divided leaves. About January or February the tree turns to a mass of golden yellow. The young trees are rather frost tender and may be protected with a wrapping of burlap. A variety of this species has purplish foliage. Acacia cultriformis, the Knife Acacia, grows to about two feet, has long pendulous branches covered with small knife-edge leaves set edgewise to the stem. Blooms open in February, bearing many heads of golden yellow flowers. Acacia laifolia is sprawling in habit, growing to about 20 feet. It can be used as a wind-break or hedge shrub; does especially well near the coast. Lemon yellow flowers are in short axillary spikes. "Leaves" are expanded petioles. Acacia longifolia var. floribunda forms a small round-headed tree, "leaves" consisting of expanded leaf blades. This species blooms most of the year, but usually not very abundantly at any one time. Blacksmiths are so called because they work in iron and other dark metals. Apple green broadloom frieze carpeting covers the floor from wall to wall, and draperies of green pebble cloth dress the windows. Three walls are papered in an ivy pattern while wood paneling is used around the fireplace. For its easy going informality, Mrs. Moon chose maple furniture, and took care to provide a goodly number of comfortable upholstered pieces. Quaint antique touches constantly delight the visitor. The magazine holder is patterned after an ancient butter churn; an old fashioned flat iron contains matches. A big, round table, five feet in diameter, started life in the dining room but has been cut down to make a wonderful coffee table. Since the Moons operate a gift shop in Anaheim it is to be expected that some of their choiceest pieces be used at home. Sure enough! Bird prints with maple frames line the walls, and a pair of Kay Finch's celebrated ceramic chanticleers grace the mantle. This is the season for the summer fire screen and it offers a place for potted plants and has a trellis for their vines. A small version of the scales of justice made ANAHEIM TRUCK & TRANSFER CO.
