The five-man committee, headed by Senator Hugh M. Burns (D-Fresno), asserted the communist party has teamed with its secret members on the faculty and with front youth organizations to spread its "warped" ideas. "The communism," it observed, "is soldom advocated in the classroom by undercover members of college faculties", because exposure and expulsion would follow, ending the instructor's value to the party. Instead, the investigators said such agents work off the campus, through the youth groups, to recruit new adherents. "The access to students and to critical research projects are the reasons for communists to seek employment in universities," the report said. It recalled the case of Irving David Fox. He was dismissed from his job with an atomic research laboratory at the University of California after he admitted he had been a communist member. The report declared that if university officials "persist" in aiding the communist conspiracy, however innocently— "Then this committee, at least believes it is high time they were replaced by people who take a more realistic attitude toward such a serious condition."
