The services of an architect can be invaluable to the home builder. This is especially true whenever the prospective home builder is not completely certain of all the details involved in building or lacks precise plans for his home-to-be.
Architects are licensed by the State of California, and must pass rigid examinations prior to being admitted to practice.
The services rendered by an architect are comprehensive and amount to far more than merely drawing floor plans and specifications—a task that is often done within the architect's office by a draftsman.
It is the architect who draws on his scientific training, his vast knowledge of building materials and methods, his ingenious knack of designing a house so that it will, when completed, give you the greatest possible living enjoyment.
The architect's services to you begin before a single plan is drawn, and continues until after the final completion of your home. First, he discusses with you the kind of house you want, often assisting you in determining the best possible building site for the size and style of home you desire. Next, he prepares initial sketches which will help visualize the house of your dreams.
Then, with a plan approved by you, the detailed working drawings are prepared by the architect or by his office under his direction.
With detailed drawings completed, the architect next assists you in selecting a contractor (or, of course, you may specify a particular contractor) and attends to the important, indispensable matter of awarding contracts for the building of your home.
When construction gets under way, the architect proves of even greater value and help. He continually checks the progress of the building; he makes certain that materials are of the right

When construction gets under way, the architect proves of even greater value and help. He continually checks the progress of the building; he makes certain that materials are of the right quality, that construction is done in a workmanlike manner, that the plans for your house are being strictly followed. His O.K. is given before you pay for any item. Such services can be performed only by a responsible person trained in all phases of construction, who represents you and your interests.
The architect is paid by you; he does not get, nor does he expect nor will he receive any commission or bonus from any contractor, sub-contractor or building materials supplier. His fee is paid for services rendered to you, and you alone.

Speaking of ROSES, we invite you to come in and see the samples of TWO NEW ROSES, introduced by ELMER ROSE GROWERS, which will be available in 1952. One is a really outstanding RED FLORIBUNDA called CARROUSEL and the other is a dainty PINK FLORIBUNDA fittingly named KATHY FISCUS. We predict that the CARROUSEL will be one of the most popular ROSE INTRODUCTIONS of 1952 because of THREE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS: (1) it's VIGOROUS growing habit, (2) it's clean, SEMI-GLOSSY FOLLIAGE, and (3) most important of all, the LARGE, DARK VELVETY RED BLOSSOMS which hold their rich color until they drop cleanly from the plant. These important features will make this ROSE ideal for HEDGE PLANTINGS. You will love the delicate PINK DOUBLE FLOWERS (which improve with age) of the KATHY FISCUS. This ROSE also has GOOD FOLLIAGE and is a STRONG GROWER.
REMEMBER to keep your ROSES doing well through the SUMMER; give them PLENTY of WATER, FERTILIZE them occasionally, and SPRAY frequently. Also REMEMBER the place to get your FERTILIZERS, SPRAYS, GARDEN HOSE, SPRINKLERS and IRRIGATORS and GARDEN SUPPLIES of all kinds is at LEE'S NURSERY.

PENHALL HOME REVEALS CONTRACTOR'S Preferences in Own Ranch-Type Home
BY JOAN S. WHITE
To discover the best features modern housing, it is a good idea to have a look at the kind house a building contractor sets for his own family. You find such a home, just one old, at 9432 S. Euclid Ave. was built by Alvin Penhall for wife and two small children.
As to architecture, the dwelling comes under the heading of modern ranch type, 1800 square feet. It includes three bedrooms and den, a bath and a half, large living-dining area, and a service unit divided into kitchen, laundry and service porch.
In this country home, secluded by a grove of orange trees, recogitation of Amaheim's mild climate is seen in the provision for comfortable outdoor living. The back contour of the house partially encloses a 12x28 foot patio which is shaded by over head beams known to the trade as egg crating. The floor is of red cement, and the patio is furnished with garden furniture of aluminum tubing.
The backyard is beautifully landscaped, and guests are delighted by the utilitarian barbecue house. Children are particularly intrigued with the outdoor drinking fountain of Arizona flagstone.
The house itself is constructed on a cement slab with asphalt tile floor covering in the service unit, den and boy's bedroom. The remaining floor area is covered luxuriously with wall to wall carpeting over air foam rubber padding.
The generous amount of window space which includes an enormous picture window in the living room is dressed with pleated pull drapes of a new fabric called Cellaloom. It needs no lining and is sunproof.
Textures are important in the modern trend of interior decoration. In this home, structural glass and flagstone blend with pebbly wall paper of grass cloth and the rather rough walls of painted cement blocks.
Contemporary ash furniture upholstered in colorful frieze is used throughout augmented by serviceable built-ins.
The kitchen with its adjoining breakfast space is a joy to enjoy.
There are seventy or so species of Fuchsias found in American tropics and a few distant New Zealand, but of the lovely varieties we see in our gardens were developed by hybridization among a few those species. Cultivated varieties number many hundreds, naming the kinds seen in grazing one of the major problems fronting the Fuchsia Society.
Fuchsias usually become mant in our area, but in winter may remain evergreen. They cannot stand temperate much below 20 degrees Fahrenheit; purple kinds seem to be most resistant than the other colors.
Spring is the usual time for tearing out Fuchsias but they be set out at any time. The quire a fertile, well-drained, garden soil. Some varieties stand almost full sun all day; will do well on the east side of a building, while others like least partial shade all day. An example addition of peat moss leaf mold to the soil is beneficial.
The young plants should pinched back a few times to still small to make them larger and compact. This should not keep up too long as it blooms. This includes also basket varieties. Only enriched staking to keep the plants up is recommended.
Some recommend a s-sprung in winter, but even indicates that this is not good for the plants. Light pruning, cut out dead wood, removing feathery growth, and modifying heading back is suggested as an alternative.
Thrip and aphids are the principal pests these pests being trailed with nicotine or thrum sprays. Occasionally or mealy bugs become trodden some, especially with basket traps (because of the locations types are often grown in). Nurserymen's say.

There are seventy or eighty species of Fuchsias found in the American tropics and a few in Ant New Zealand, but most of the lovely varieties we grow our gardens were developed hybridization among a few of these species. Cultivated variety number many hundreds, and among the kinds seen in gardens one of the major problems concerning the Fuchsia Society.
Fuchsias usually become dormant in our area, but in mild waters may remain evergreen. They cannot stand temperatures below 20 degrees F but the simple kinds seem to be more resistant than the other colors.
Spring is the usual time for setting out Fuchsias but they may set out at any time. They require a fertile, well-drained, moist soil. Some varieties will end almost full sun all day, most will do well on the east side of building, while others like at first partial shade all day. An addition of peat moss or mold to the soil is beneficial.
The young plants should be chiced back a few times while small to make them bushy compact. This should not be up too long as it delays coming. This includes also the market varieties. Only enough timing to keep the plants upright recommended.
Some recommend a severe chining in winter, but evidence indicates that this is not good for plants. Light pruning, cutting dead wood, removing tall less growth, and moderate chining back is suggested as best.rip and aphids are the principal pests, these pests being coned with nicotine or pyrex sprays. Occasionally scale mealy bugs become troubleless, especially with basket types because of the locations such as are often grown in). One of highly refined oil sprays made delicate plants will usually control. Do not spray oils.
