LEE'S GAL FRIDAY Garden Gossip Did you wish on Mother's Day that you had some lovely CARNATIONS flowering in your yard? Why not get a start right now by planting some nice stocky ROOTED CUTTINGS so you won't have the same regrets next year? CHRYSANTHEMUM and DAHLIA PLANTS should be set out soon. It's always a problem to a new homeowner to select TREES That will distinguish his yard from others. There are numbers of ATTRACTIVE SHADE and ORNAMENTAL TREES that are not too commonly planted, but still are quite practical. The EVERGREEN PEAR, grown as a TREE, is most distinctive with graceful branches of GLOSSY LEAVES and a myriad of WHITE BLOOM in the very early SPRING. The RED-LEAFED PLUM TREE will lend a touch of COLOR where needed. TULIP TREES make a very satisfactory SHADE TREE. We are happy to help advise you and show Modern Alden Home House Of Historic Alden Family It is usual for passers-by to pause to admire the new house on the southwest corner of Ken Way and Citron st. for its flagstone and stucco exterior with touches of fluted ironwork is set off to perfection by lovely landscaping and a thick, velvety lawn. The four bedroom house is just a year old and its up to the minute architecture belies the fact that most of its 2200 square feet of living area is furnished with antiques. A collection of family heirlooms in this modern setting makes it even more attractive on the inside than it appears from the street. Priscilla and John This home at 800 Ken Way belongs to Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Alden. Mr. Alden is a direct descendant of the historic John Alden, famed in story and poetry, and the Aldens are lucky indeed to have so many heirlooms of this illustrious family in their possession. Their family Bible bears the date 1646 and a rare old plush bound photograph album on its stand is displayed in the library. To tell the time, the Aldens glance at the face of a wall clock set in an intricately carved walnut case, the work of Mr. Alden's father some fifty years ago; or at one of those famous German Shatz four hundred day clocks in its glass case atop the grand piano. An organ lamp lights the piano now, but it once lighted the organ at the wedding of Mrs. Alden's mother and father. The handsome solid silver twin holder for cigarettes was originally designed to hold spoons and is a conversation piece. Reaction to these flowers is not uniform approval, for some folks do not care for the daisy type flower and the species is not happy in soil with poor drainage or in cool damp situations. Yet, planted in a warm sunny spot and provided with light well-drained soil, no flower is more showy or attracts more attention. Gerberas need an open sunny location in this area—inland they like a little shade during the warmer part of the day. Since the plants are perennials and will grow in place for some time, it will pay to go to a little extra work to prepare the bed. If soil is heavy, excavate the bed. Wanderer Sets Local Citizens Gerberas need an open sunny location in this area—inland they like a little shade during the warmer part of the day. Since the plants are perennials and will grow in place for some time, it will pay to go to a little extra work to prepare the bed. If soil is heavy, excavate the bed to a depth of 18 inches and mix about equal parts sand and the top soil removed, some well rotted steer manure, and a little lime, unless lime is already excessive in the soil. Leaf mold, peat moss, or acid compost are not needed as they are more acid than the Gerbera prefers. If your soil is sandy, merely loosen it and add a little lime if needed. In planting divisions—the plants usually obtained at the nursery—avoid covering the crowns. Irrigate thoroughly to settle the soil about the roots. Irrigate the plants often enough to avoid drying out of the soil. The plants will stand considerable drying, but will not produce good flowers under such conditions. Very little cultivation is needed, beyond cutting weeds. Top soil should be loosened occasionally, but care should be taken not to injure the rather fleshy roots. Gerberas require very little fertilizing. A tablespoon of 6% mixed fertilizer or bone meal once in the spring is usually sufficient. Aphis sometimes attack the plants, gathering mostly on the under sides of the leaves and around the crown. Ants will be attracted by the aphis and are prone to make nests around the roots. Nicotine or pyrethrum sprays are needed for the aphis. Chlordane dust or spray around and under the plants will take care of the ants. Wanderer Sets Local Citizens Agape at Dress, Flower Bumming By ANITA ROBERTSON George Gustav Zidbeck visited Anaheim recently and left a trail of gaping locals staring after him on his jaunt about town. He is not a man who is conscious of the latest apparel fashions, just so long as he is dressed for rather aimless wandering, he is satisfied. On an average day he walks 30 or 40 miles. During his travels he stops and chats with whom ever is handy and collects as many flowers as possible. A housewife who is weeding her garden, or a gardener may give him a few, he picks others, which he claims are wild flowers. These flowers are his main passion. If he stops to chat with someone who has no flowers, he gives them a few out of his crowded and tired looking store. Mr. Zidbeck lives at 917 Quarry St., Corona, and he has been married for 22 years. He claims that when he does something, he does it well. His wife is attending Corona night school and will receive her high school diploma this spring. Their 16-year-old daughter will graduate from high (Continued on Page 7) The Finishing Touch for Your Windows — INSTALL — Air Ray Venetian Blinds FOR BEAUTY and COMFORT OR SHADES Made To Fit Any Window While You Wait AIR RAY VENETIAN BLINDS Factory to You 1233 N.
