NEUBAUER ... Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die.—Rev. 3:2. CALIFORNIANA — In 1856 San Francisco rose with indignation following the assassination of James King of William, editor of the Evening Bulletin, who was the outstanding crusader against crime and corrupt politics. The newly formed Vigilance committee was headed by William Coleman and composed of 8000 members. They hanged James Casey, the editor's assassin, and defied corrupt public officials, including the governor. They executed four offenders, deported 25 others before they disbanded Aug. 21. SHORTSTORY — J. Francis Lemon stopped by the Fullerton airport the other day. He saw Don Hobbs, war-time filier who is well known throughout Southern California. "Say, Don, what became of those two boys who set the record a couple of years ago?" Lemon asked. "You mean Bill Barris and Dick Reidel?" "Yes, they're the Sunkist Lady pilots." ed as the plane raced down the blacktop strip. In a moment it was airborne. Hobbs explained the traffic pattern. "You can really see a lot of things from the air that you can't see from the ground," the pilot said. "Look at that orchard down there. See how spotted it is—how some trees grow better than others and how some soil produced more than others." "That's Frank Del Giorrie's place just to the right of us. You can see how he's plowing his place." The plane flew over Manchester. Cars streamed along the busy thoroughfare just as if they had been ants. "There are no boulevard stops up here. Why you hardly notice you're moving." "We're going 120 miles per hour," Hobbs replied pointing to an instrument. DISTANCE—"Notice how close Anthelm and Fullerton are together?" the pilot asked as they passed over the "shoe string strip," which in 30 days will become part of Fullerton. "And that," the pilot pointed out, "is that Mexican labor camp they're making the fuss about." "It's bigger'n I thought it was." Lemon said as he surveyed the dormitory buildings from the air. From the air it looked as if George Graham's Citrus Growers' camp was isolated between Anaheim and Fullerton, hidden behind a plane raced down the blacktop strip. He saw Don Hobbs, war-time filer who is well known throughout Southern California. "Say, Don, what became of those two boys who set the record a couple of years ago?" Lemon asked. "You mean Bill Barris and Dick Reidel?" "Yes, they're the Sunkist Lady pilots . . ." "They're doing all right," the airport manager replied. "Bill is the pilot for Apple Valley and Dick recently signed up to fly an Oregon lumberman who lives in Southern California. They both fly $15,000 jobs." "Well, they deserve it." "Say, Lem," Hobbs said. "I have a new two-place job. I'd like to take you up and show you a few things you've been reading about." Almost before the airport manager could finish, Lemon said. "Let's go!" FLYBOY—Hobbs led the way to the plane, had Lemon fasten the safety belt and explained the intricacies of the plane. "This plane is equipped with dual control, a dual ignition system—two sparkplugs, two magnetos, two of everything. That's just a safety measure. They taxied toward the runway, Hobbs reved up the engine, swung into the runway. The engine roared which in 30 days will become part of Fullerton. "And that," the pilot pointed out. "is that Mexican labor camp they're making the fuss about." "It's bigger'n I thought it was," Lemon said as he surveyed the dormitory buildings from the air. From the air it looked as if George Graham's Citrus Growers' camp was isolated between Anaheim and Fullerton, hidden behind orange groves. BUILDING—From the sky, it seemed that ant-like men were building new factories and homes over the Anaheim-Fullerton landscape. From the air the vast panorama of Northern Orange county could easily be surveyed. There below the plane were homes, rich orange groves, factories, oil wells that make up the cities of Fullerton and Anaheim, Placentia, Brea and La Habra. CONTROVERSY—The Mexican labor camp issue brought out a recall threat in Fullerton, but Mexican Nationals—a hundred of them—are living quietly within a block of the Maple ave. school. Incidentally, these workers were pulled off the job the other day, when a government directive indicated that the packing concern employing them would be fined $2000 for each man who didn't have "proper papers." Train Wreck (Continued from Page 1) witnesses saw an electric flash, then flames rising from the telescoped coach. The PRR uses electric engines, powered from overhead wires, in this area. The fire was quenched after the current was turned off. Today's wreck was the second in the history of the New York-Detroit flyer. On Feb. 18, 1947, the express went off the tracks on a lonely mountain curve near Altoona, Pa., and plunged into a gully, killing 24 and injuring 150. A coroner's jury found the railroad blameless. Santa Ana Closes 80 House Project Gradual closing of the Santa Ana housing project, Casa de Santa Ana, at the municipal bowl, where quarters were established for service men and their families in 1946, following World War II, was approved by the city council yesterday on recommendation, of Park Superintendent Dale Griggs. The 80 families now occupying the project thus will receive one year and one month's notice to move, as the council okayed Griggs' recommendation that final closing date be set for July 1, 1952. The housing project will be closed a unit at a time, as families move elsewhere, Griggs said. The buildings will be cleared away, starting from the west end of the project, as they are vacated. If vacancies occur at other locations in the project, families on the west edge will be moved to the vacant quarters, and the units thus freed will be removed. This process will be followed, said Griggs, until the entire project is vacated and the buildings removed. But everybody must be out by July 1, 1952, he said. Griggs told the council that the buildings were of five-year class construction, and are now in their fifth year. To repaint the buildings and recondition heating units and other facilities would cost the city $10,000 he estimated. Lumber and fixtures will be saliented Sunday at Grace Lutheran, Trinity Sunday is to be observed Sunday at Grace Lutheran, 406 South Palm st., with the Rev. H. F.
