Gazette Homemaker Reminds Us That Mother’s Day Is On its Way—So, She Goes on a Little Shopping Tale By JOAN S. WHITE Nothing’s too good for mom. That is the way dad and the youngsters feel when “her” special day rolls around. Because she deserves only the best, shopping for a gift is sometimes a problem. What will please mother the most? With Mother’s Day only a short time away, Anaheim stores are ready with a variety of excellent gift suggestions. Their stocks have been chosen with Anaheim mothers in mind and a glance at the displays in their windows will probably solve your problem immediately. Mother sometimes unknowingly hints her needs. Perhaps she has longed for a colorful summer coat like the popular shorties or the more sedate longer ones at Walburg’s. These are all nationally advertised brands that can be depended upon for style, fit and wearability as are all of Walburg’s smart dresses, blouses, suits and skirts. Penney’s is loaded with lovely things with many unusual values especially for Mother’s Day. Mothers are partial to the smooth fitting half-size dresses that Penney’s stores carries. And the budget priced luncheon cloths, towel sets and costume jewelry are sure to please her. If she likes jewelry, stop in at Moon’s Gift Shop. Penney Co. photo) Anaheim Supermarkets Would Awe A Visitor From England, Joan Says By JOAN WHITE “Grocery palace” is the name applied to our supermarkets by an awed visitor from England. How right he is! Nowhere else in the world is there an institution to compare with the American supermarket. The sound of the word itself brings to mind an endless variety of fresh-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables, row after row of canned goods, inviting show cases filled to overflowing with quality meats, fish, cheese, delicatessen items, foreign delicacies, fresh bread, packaged candy, etc. And in case a customer is in doubt as to what to do with any one of these foods, pictorial recipe books are on hand to give step by step directions. Usually the label on each package gives adequate information. Sometimes we get so close to these wonders of the American scene that we fail to appreciate them fully or to take advantage of all that is offered. If you doubt this, stroll down the aisles of Safeway or Alpha Beta stores in Anaheim this week. Look at their wares through the eyes of that English visitor—the fellow who is rationed at home to about nine cents worth of meat a week and has to get in line at his neighborhood store to receive his share of the few unrationed items on his bill of fare. What Shall We Have? We are in the midst of plenty, but in spite of that, the question of what to have for dinner continues to puzzle the home-makers. You say your husband won’t eat salad? That may be the cook’s fault. If your salads are greeted with “what do you think I am, a rabbit?” drop the subject for a while and when you get up courage to put salad on the menu once more, start with very small portions. Be sure the salad greens are dried well after being washed, and coarsely chopped so that each vegetable retains its own identity. Just before meal time, pour on the salad oil first, tossing the vegetables between fork and spoon until each is well coated with oil. Then add your vinegar or lemon juice and other seasonings. Sounds simple, but this trick insures a crisp, fresh tasting salad every time. Do serve the salad first when folks are the hungriest and even hubby will find that he likes it. Tender Meat Pork is a good buy this week, and thrifty home-makers are selecting fairly large pieces. The shoulder makes an excellent roast and you may want to trim off enough lean meat for chop suey, meat pie, or a casserole dish. Did you know that pork is a good source of the B vitamins. Cook it slowly and well to enjoy tenderness and full flavor. For the makings of a quick meal, pork chops and steaks can be tucked away in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator and cooked with or without thawing. Another inspiration for a tasty main dish is a package of frozen goods and services. It keeps prices in line and complete selection of my commodity you could nibble on in a progressive town, or not content with past tastes but moves along in the times. How wonderful to raise in a community which offers fortable “country living” in the beautiful trees and gardens, green fields and of citrus and at the same senths the advantages of a lis—the fine stores, job ties, excellent schools and cultural facilities. Looking Back During the past year, that has been devoted to new Anaheim home-makers of interest to Anaheim herers. Many of the com best cooks have contribu favorite recipes. Through her ed word we have met Anaheim’s most outstanding makers. You will miss Messrs. Sam Christensen. What Shall We Have? We are in the midst of plenty, but in spite of that, the question of what to have for dinner continues to puzzle the home-makers. The need for economy is usually the basis of indecision. The food budget calls for careful planning and for this reason, it is helpful to watch for advertised food specials. Anaheim's leading super-markets list their specials on the pages of the Anaheim Gazette each week, and these budget priced foods can form the basis for many a thrifty meal. It is wise, of course, to take advantage of produce in season. For instance, why always rely on apple pie now that strawberry time is here? It seems sad to think of peeling and mashing potatoes night after night when sweet little new potatoes can be had for a song and can be popped into boiling water, skins and all, and brought to the table with a dressing of butter. The assortment of fresh green foods is wonderful just now and their high quality and pin money prices make a "must" of tossed vegetable salad. Cook the vegetables if you like, but to serve them raw is a healthful habit. An appetizing way to start a meal is with a green salad. By adding bits of fish, left-over meat, chopped eggs or cheese, you have a filling main dish around which a whole meal can be planned. There is nothing nicer for a spring luncheon than this combination Did you know that pork is a good source of the B vitamins. Cook it slowly and well to enjoy tenderness and full flavor. For the makings of a quick meal, pork chops and steaks can be tucked away in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator and cooked with or without thawing. Another inspiration for a tasty main dish is a package of frozen chicken a la king. It becomes party fare when you serve it in easy-to-make toast cases. To make the cases, trim the crusts from slices of bread and press the slices into muffin tins to form cups. Toast in the oven or under the broiler. Fill at once with the hot chicken a la king. New Foods Variety is the spice of life at meal time and adventures in good eating often come from trying something new. The best of the new mixes offer unexpected pleasure. Have you tried the one for blueberry muffine or the one that makes a big snowy white angel food cake? And now they've done it; grown seedless figs. The Pacific Health Food Store has a new shipment of these unusual figs and reports that the supply hardly keeps up with the demand—they are that good. The Pacific Health FoodStore has two more dandy new values in nourishment: pancake flour made with soya and whole wheat flour and 100 per cent soya fruit bars. These fruit bars are especially recommended for between meal snacks for youngsters. They are a soft, cookie type bar which are high in food value, plump with fruits, and very tasty. An anniversary is an exciting affair; it is a time to look back over the past and to gaze into the future. You, dear reader, are an Anaheim home-maker. What has this past year of Anaheim's progress meant to you? First there was the extensive building program—the new dwellings and places of business that we watched go up all around us. This has meant a wider choice of quality housing for our family and even more up-to-date schools for our youngsters. Industrial expansion. What a good feeling it gives us. It offers more job opportunities, a higher standard of living and a greater sense of security than ever before. As bigger and better stores come to town it means wider range of goods and services. Competition keeps prices in line and offers a complete selection of nearly any commodity you could name. It gives a home-maker a feeling of pride to know that she is living in a progressive town, one that is not content with past performances but moves along in step with the times. How wonderful to raise a family in a community which offers comfort. Clark, Claude Slack, Le Roy Hildebrand, Wayne Held, Linnie Campbell, Victor Jacobsen, Don Chamberlin and the host of others.
