Los Angeles Anaheim 2215 General Electric Company May Need To Many People—But to Anaheim Probably no one in the United States needs an introduction to the name General Electric. Products bearing the circled GE trademark are commonplace in everyday life and the name itself is used almost synonymously with progress and research in most scientific lines of endeavor. Electronics is the field generally associated with General Electric, and justly so. However, significant offerings have been made in many other fields and one of those, alkyd resin paint vehicles, has directly profited Anaheim. Glyptal is the trade name for the paint base, which looks like warm honey, put out by the Anaheim General Electric plant on N. Olive St. Last Friday the plant celebrated the fourth anniversary of its activities in Anaheim with a dinner attended by officials and employees. In addition to the birthday celebration, the management and 33 employees celebrated 3½ years of no lost-time accidents, a record of which they all are proud. Superintendent of manufacturing in the local plant is Joe Holmes, who works under James R. Patterson, West Coast manager of the Chemical Division of General Electric. Henry C. Neilsen superintendent of engineering, charge of developmental chemistry activities and Harry C. Korn is superintendent of account and service. Glycerin, from Texas, vegeta oils, from the West Coast and M west, and phthalic anhydride, from the West Coast, are the raw materials used by GE's Anaheim plant in producing Glyptal. The manufacturing process is largely one mixing ingredients at the pro-pressure and temperature in hydroelectricly operated mixing kites. Holmes explained that a large proportion of employees at the plant are laboratory technicians which are necessary to supply that type of operation. Glyptal was developed in 1920's, primarily by GE. Holm said most similar products are based on the original research done GE in producing Glyptal. This is G.E.'s first chemical plant on the West Coast. HEART OF SYSTEM—In the above photo, process kettles shown are the center of the Anaheim General Electric plant's production activities. A workman is shown operating valves of the Dow-therm heating system. A sight-glass port may be seen in the center of the left kettle cover. The scale at the center top background weighs liquid raw materials before they are valveed through pipe lines to the process reactors. Mother's Day (Continued from Page 28) of the Sunbeam appliances (Mixmaster, toaster, coffee maker, waffle iron) or one of the lighting fixtures, television, table and floor lamps, free coupons redeemable in William Rogers silverware are given. So that makes two gifts for the home at the price of one. Mitchell's are holding a special sale of dinnerware this week, an exceptional value in a 65 piece set and also a smaller set of 25 pieces. The new 1951 patterns in china and crystal are truly lovely. Frostoria's new dual purpose pattern is a sensation. It comes in the smoky or clear. Mitchell's have so many wonderful items for the home that it is difficult to single out just one or two to talk about. The same is true of the Weber Book Store. Collectors delight in the array of cup and saucer sets and there is an almost endless variety of ceramic vases, candy dishes, wall brick-a-brack, and starter sets of dinner ware and crystal. Something new in the line of pictures are the Lady Hamilton Cameos. These have adorable golden frames made of plastic which are light in weight and will not 20 STORIES OF CONCRETE NEW YORK (F) — Reinforced concrete is taking the place of the usual steel skyscraper skeleton in the construction of a 20-story luxury apartment project on New York's East river front near the United Nations headquarters. The $7,000,000 structure for 390 families will be New York's first building of this height to be constructed entirely of concrete, according to Paul Tishman, the builder. A two-level underground garage will take 200 automobiles off the street. All living rooms and master bedrooms with large windows facing the river, will be five-sided rooms. tarnish. In other departments of the versatile Weber Book Store, are boxed stationery, desk sets, greeting cards, and the best selling books—from cook books to novels. What's that you say, sir? You don't think any of these gift suggestions would please her? Then better buy her the Weber Book Store's most popular book. It is entitled: "The Care and Training of Husbands." Company May Mean Electronics but to Anaheimers it is Glyptal CONTROLS. DRAFT NOTHING NEW SAUGUS (P)—Price controls and exemption of skilled industrial workers from military service have three centuries of American tradition behind them, Professor E. Neal Hartley of Massachusetts Institute of Technology disclosed here. Professor Hartley, conducting historical research for the First Iron Works association, found that a Massachusetts Bay Colony court in 1644 ordered that skilled workmen at the iron works be exempted from military service and "watching for Indians." Later a price-control law was passed for beer. The law set "maximum prices and minimum standards of quality for beer made by tavern owners." Expecting Biggest A-Bomb Explosion WASHINGTON (P) — U.S. atomic weaponers probably will set off the world's greatest explosion within the next 10 days. The nuclear fission blast will be the grand finale to a new series of tests at the Eniwetok proving grounds in the Marshall Islands. Completion of the series will make 1931 the boom year for atomic explosions. At least half a dozen atomic explosions will have been touched off by the United States before the year is half over. There may be still more. An Atomic Energy commission announcement in late March indicated, by the use of the present tense, that the series of experimental explosions may have been underway then. The latest Eniwetok series, like those during January and February at the proving grounds at Frenchman's Flats, Nev., have become one of the lesser-kept atomic secrets so far as the time element has been concerned.
