For Results and Quick 5 Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, APRIL 16, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Anaheim’s Co. K. Looks Different Anaheim’s Company K underwent considerable of an evolution before it was shipped to Japan recently, according to reports from the company. Capt. Gus Luzania, who took the company from Anaheim to Camp Cooke and put it into training, is now at Port Benning, taking an advanced infantry course. Upon its completion he may rejoin the 40th Division in Japan. First Lt. Ralph Comstock, who left Anaheim as one of the Company K officers, has been assigned to a cadre company at Camp Cooke. The company’s mission is to train replacements and fillers for 40th Division units. Other personnel in the company include Lt. Elton Roberson, Brea, Sgt. James Heffron, Sgt. Ray Bersticker, and Sgt. Norman Brock; Sergeants Bersticker and Brock and Sgt. William B. Burr, Jr., are awaiting call to the Infantry Officer Candidate school. Sgt. Larry Richards and Sgt. Augustine Pinedo have received Ranger training at Fort Benning and are awaiting assignment to AUHS ANGLES BY JEANNINE PANNIER The talk of the school since Thursday morning was the exchange assembly we had from Newport Harbor high. The program was made up of members of the drama club and every number literally "brought down the house." Just about everyone agreed that "it was the best assembly we'd had all year." The Colonial Co-eds and the Sub-Debs, service clubs of the school for junior and senior girls are both now accepting applications for new members for next year. The clubs each have their own separate activities, qualification for membership, pins, and sweaters, but both organizations are mainly for the purpose of enabling the girls to be of better service to their school. The students of AUHS may feel that they are being cheated, (we hope not.) but it can't be helped...for from now until the end of the year, the Anoranco will be Lewis Lemke, 52, Dies in Placentia Second death in recent weeks to come to board members of Orange County Water District struck Lewis Lemke, 52, of Placentia ave., Placentia. Just elected a few weeks ago as vice-president of the Anaheim Union Water Co., Mr. Lemke unexpectedly last night of a heat attack. Previous cardiogram tests had indicated no serious effects. The Lemke family came to Orange county about 65 years ago, and were pioneers in the district. Lewis Lemke was son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lemke. He graduated from Fullerton schools and was active on local boards and committees up until his death last night. Mr. Lemke was a director of the Orange County Water District, vice-president of the Anaheim Union Water Co., a director of the Placentia Pioneer Orang Assn., a director of the Santa Ana River Development Co., a member of the Placentia Rotary, Fast Master of the Anaheim Music Lodge, a member of the Anaheim Royal Arch Masons, member of the Fullerton Co. mandy, and a member of Other personnel in the company include Lt. Elton Roberson, Brea, Sgt. James Heffron, Sgt. Ray Bersticker, and Sgt. Norman Brock. Sergeants Bersticker and Brock and Sgt. William B. Burr, Jr., are awaiting call to the Infantry Officer Candidate school. Sgt. Larry Richards and Sgt. Augustine Pinedo have received Ranger training at Fort Benning and are awaiting assignment to units. Sgt. Al Miller, one of the original members of Company K, and Corp. Tony Taffolla are at Camp Cooke awaiting discharge. Several other members of the company have been discharged over the past few months for age, physical conditions, etc. Their places in the company have been filled by men recruited by the Guard and the Army. Capt. Charles Barnhart is at Fort Benning taking an advanced course. Major Loren Lukens, well known Orange county athlete, is taking an advanced course at Fort Benning and will rejoin the 40th Division as Plans and Training officers. Third Battalion; 224th Infantry, of the 40th Division. Awaiting orders to join Company K in Japan are Sgt. Bob Latimore, who has just completed a cook's course at the Presidio in San Francisco, and Corp. Donald Brent, who is on convalescent leave because of a recent operation. Some of the non-commissioned officers who took Company K to Japan include 1st Sgt. Maurice Carmichael, Sgt. James Palmer (supply), Corp. James Coburn (clerk), Platoon Sgts. Norman Leonard, C. F. Coburn, Leslie Crowell, and Schultz. About 40 per cent of the company is made up of Anaheim men. Before leaving for Japan, Company K made good use of the fund donated to them by Anaheim people. The company had a rousing Christmas party, purchased photographic equipment, bought a record player and records, and purchased other items intended to make life more pleasant in Japan. The clubs each have their own separate activities, qualification for membership, pins, and sweaters, but both organizations are mainly for the purpose of enabling the girls to be of better service to their school. The students of AUHS may feel that they are being cheated, (we hope not.) but it can't be helped... for from now until the end of the year, the Anoranco will be putting out a smaller paper... a pony edition. The reason is that the big printing press is busy working on the '51 Colonist, and the Anoranco will be run on a smaller "job" press. Seniors only... a special meeting for seniors was called for an activity period Tuesday morning in the auditorium. Representatives from Orange Coast and Fullerton Junior colleges and Santa Ana college spoke to the students on "Why Graduating Students Should Attend College," acquainted the seniors with registration procedures and the advantages of attending their schools. In the spotlight this week was Philip Taylor, an AUHS junior who was violin soloist with the Huntington Park Symphony orchestra Tuesday night. Philip is concertmaster of the AUHS orchestra and is active in many of our student activities. The Anaheim Union High school P-T will have its annual meeting on April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the library. The program will consist of the installation of new officers, numbers by the a cappella choir, and a talk on South America by Mrs. J. Lee Rogers. Rotarians Hear Invention 'Czar' "Invention is the mother industry." Don L. Davis, of Los Angeles, today told the Rotary club at its noon meeting. He then went on to say how everything used anywhere, anytime had to be invented and developed. Mr. Davis, president of the Gadget of the Month club, the National Gadget Assn., and many other invention groups said "fortunes will be made by many average men who will produce new inventions and better ways of doing Mr. Lemke was a director of the Orange County Water District, vice-president of the Anaheim Masonic Lodge, a member of the Anaheim Royal Arch Masons, member of the Fullerton Commandery, and a member of the Al Malaiki Temple Shrine in Angeles. He was a member of the Placentia Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, Mr. Etakla Lemke; two daughters Miss Wilma Jean of Fresno, and Mrs. Barbara Wales of Daval Calif., four sisters, Mrs. D. Hasson of Placentia, Mrs. A. Schinhofen, aviation storekeeper, second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schinhofen of Route 14, 15252 Anaheim Olive rd., and Chief Machinist Carl E. Scott, USN, husband of Mrs. Margaret M. Their ship, the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge, returned to the United States for overhaul last December but was ordered back to the Far East when the Chinese communists entered the Korean conflict. The Valley Forge had been in the Far East for nine months and was the first carrier to launch her planes against the invading North Koreans. The ship is now at her home port at San Digo.
