LEE'S GAL FRIDAY Garden Gossip
When you meander through our nursery at this time of year, your eye is attracted to color of all kinds here and there:
the lacy-foliaged DIOSMA (pink and white), the feathery yellow CASSIA, the ever-blooming lavender PEA SHRUB (POLYGALA), the dainty LEPTOSPERMUM in pink, white and red, the lovely white WISTERIA VINE, the showy BOUGAINVILLEA VINE, the novel little CHORIZEMA, the spring-flowering DECIDUOUS SHRUBS such as FLOWERING QUINCE and WEIGELA, and perhaps the most colorful of all—the always popular PELARGONIUM. We have them in GALLON-CAN SIZE as well as smaller plants in pots. The later-flowering CAMELLIAS also show a great deal of color. By the way, those large-sized CAMELLIA PLANTS we have on special for $3.50 have been going like hot cakes, but there are still some nice PLANTS with BLOSSOMS.
A great many folks paid attention to my REMINDER last week on BARE ROOT TREES. If you weren't one of them, here I am again prodding you to get that old SPADE out and start DIGGING.

Valued at an estimated $30,000, the new home of Erwin Pitra and Mason Ratekin, 8911 Katella ave., is one of the most widely discussed houses in Anaheim. Because of its notable architectural innovations and its gorgeous Oriental furnishings, some of which date back 1000 years, it is soon to be featured in a forthcoming issue of Sunset Magazine.
The house is located 150 feet from the road, centered acre grove of young orchid. The ranch theme gives texture its long, low gravel and the modernistic touch over from there. This utilizes glass extensive bination with stucco and natural redwood. A room mica covers the main car port and small guilder Erwin Pitra drew up himself and with the "OUT OF THIS WORLD"

from the road, centered in an acre grove of young orange trees. The ranch theme gives the structure its long, low graceful lines and the modernistic trend takes over from there. The exterior utilizes glass extensively in combination with stucco and polished natural redwood. A roof of white mica covers the main building, car port and small guest house. Erwin Pitra drew up the plans himself and with the help of a carpenter, completed the building in three months.
The floor plan of the house allows for 1735 square feet which includes two bedrooms, bath, kitchen, entrance hall, living room and music room. It is a house with many entrances. The front door opens into a central hall which gives access to every room in the house. The walls and ceiling of the hall are painted a deep fuschia. Silhouetted against this bright background is the lush greenery of growing plants in a planter box.
A side entrance leads into the music room which houses an extensive collection of records. The beautifully appointed kitchen which features tile on counter and cupboard tops has a service entrance at the rear.
Erwin Pitra built the house, but Mason Ratekin, his friend for many years, furnished it. Ratekin who is in the steamship business has spent a lifetime collecting art objects from China, Japan and Tibet. He has contributed some of his choisest pieces to the house.
There is an elaborately carved cabinet put together in true Oriental fashion without nails. It was given to him by the first American Ambassador to Japan. There is a Chinese chest of teakwood covered by a rare tapestry. The handsome hand-carved tables and intricate Japanese screens date as far back as the Seun Dynasty of 1426. The miniatures in jade, crystal and ivory are priceless.
Throughout the house, the old and the new complement each other. As a background for these antiques, the living room walls are of honey colored combed plywood combined with sections of plaster painted a dark aqua. Gold-biege wall-to-wall carpeting with a deep pile covers the floor and is

Question: Is a survey necessary when buying property today?
Answer: Property changes hands often and quickly these days and the new owner may often be accepting a deed which, while valid, does not contain vital information that should be included.
When property is purchased the seller agrees to deliver to the buyer a certain bit of property. It is the seller's responsibility to hire a surveyor and have the property laid out to indicate the amount of property to be sold in the transaction.
In the county surveyor's office the description is checked for accuracy of measurements and locations, and the buyer's name is listed on the records.
Corners and angle points are established by the surveyor, who then writes a description, certifies it, and gives it to the lawyer representing the seller. The lawyer makes up the deed. Federal tax stamps (55c per $500 value) are then attached and the deed is sent to the map division of the county surveyor.
Next the county auditor lists the new owner's name and the value of the property for tax purposes. Upon completion of this step the county recorder records the deed and the property officially belongs to the new owner.
If the survey on property you intend purchasing is doubtful, it's a wise move to have an accurate, complete survey made.

Budding Brings New Life to Old Healthy Plants
Few gardeners realize that an old plant can be completely remodeled by budding. Magic can be accomplished by placing a single bud in contact with the live wood of a growing plant. A new variety of rose, for example, can be introduced into an old plant, missing branches of an espalier can be replaced, or a flowering tree can be changed into a fruit-bearing tree.
Plants which are usually budded, rather than grafted, include peach, cherry, and plum trees, and most stone fruits. Commercially grown roses are invariably propagated by means of budding.
Unlike grafting, budding requires only a single bud. Further information as to the tools to be used, the best times to bud various trees and shrubs, means to force young growth on an old tree to produce wood suitable for budding, and suggestions for protecting the tender buds until active growth starts can be obtained from your local nurseryman.

Our common geraniums which are not really geraniums at all, but members of the genus Pelargonium, are among our best garden subjects. Native to South Africa, they have been cultivated for more than 200 years and much hybridizing has been done. Although the group has suffered lack of popularity in our area, some of the very fine recent introductions have revived interest. Lack of popularity may have been due in part to the ease with which slips can be passed around and the ease with which the plants can be grown in this area.
The name Pelargonium is usually reserved for the type known as Martha Washington geraniums, but the common garden geraniums, the scented leaf geraniums, and the ivy geraniums also are all Pelargoniums. There is considerable confusion in the matter of names.
Pelargoniums—or geraniums, as you may wish to call them—require very little cultivation. Weed control with a hoe or getting the soil ready for planting is about all that is necessary. Cultivation should be shallow to avoid injuring the roots.
Bedding varieties require very little attention during the growing season. Regular pinching off of the tips makes for stockier and bushier plants that yield more flowers and makes heavy pruning unnecessary most of the time. This includes the trailing ivy type as well as the bush types. Martha Washington are inclined to become rangy unless they are pinched back. Heavy pruning may be done at any time except just before the cold season. If done at this time, new growth is forced which is easily injured by frost. Also little pruning is desirable during periods of heavy bloom.
