Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Marine Back (Continued from Page 1) the service of the Marines to take them where they wanted to go. Collier left the U.S. with the First Marine Brigade, August 2, 1950, for the Korean war zone. He was with the First Marines when they were trapped at Cho-sin reservoir and survived the march out to Hungnam. He told of the bitter march, made under continuous Chinese fire in cold that dropped to 32 degrees below zero. "That cold was a very important factor in the march," he related. "We were equipped with winter clothing that was designed for use in zero weather, but not the 32 below variety. We were wearing snow packs, which consist of rubber boots with a leather liner and top and two pairs of heavy woollen socks. They were fine as long as one's feet stayed dry, but if they began sweating the sweat froze and we found ourselves walking in ice." Many cases of frostbite developed just that way, according to Collier, and he was one of the victims. Otherwise he suffered no wounds from enemy action. The most tragic victims of the war, according to Collier, are the civilian refugees. Bombed, shelled and shot out of their homes, they wander through the country, clogging the roads and slowing up the military, ever on the move with no place to go. Their main interest, Collier said, seems to be to get behind the U.N. lines and stay there. That is true of Saddler 1-4 Pick Over Salas Tonight. LOS ANGELES UP—Featuring weight Champion Sandy Saddler New York, is rated a 1-4 favor for tonight's 10-round, non-tilt fight with Lauro Salas, Monterrey Mex., holder of the California 126-pound crown. Saddler scored a technical knockout over Salas a year ago Cleveland. He has a record of knockouts in 129 matches. Salas has 13 defeats and two draws 50 fights. North Koreans, too, he said. Even in the mass tragedy war there is a grim humor. Collier told of the civilian in Seoul who was wearing an arm-band saying "Welcome U.N. Army when the Marines marched in during one of the numerous conquests of the southern capital. A Korean interpreter, wise in the war of his own people, took the arm band off the civilian's arm and turned it inside out. On the inside were the words, "Welcome Peoples' (red) Army." Collier has been in the Marine Corps since 1942 and participated in the campaigns for Tarawal Saipan and Tinian during the last war. May 1 he will report back to Camp Pendleton for duty. Whiles beyond, he doesn't know. He hopes to stay in the State however, he said. U.S. Game wardens travel 388,938 miles in Alaska in 1945 mostly by plane. NEIGHBORLY NEIGHBORS WHY WON'T IT WHEN IT FIRST WATER? AND IF ANY, WHY WONT DRAFT VANKTE APART? OH, THE TOMLINE WON'T BE TIED TO THE PLANE...IT'LL BE TIED AROUND YOUR WAIST! Bombed, shelled and shot out of their homes, they wander through the country, clogging the roads and slowing up the military, ever on the move with no place to go.
