'Over Back Fence' Visits
By Anita Robertson
Photos by Leonard Kreidt
A Gazette photographer and I took a trek along N. Helena st. this week and made our first stop at 207½ to visit Mrs. Jeanette Yates.
Mrs. Yates collects antiques; china, glass, crystal and porcelain. Her collection is still quite small, she started in the summer of 1950 when she and her husband, James, took a trip to Kentucky. While there she acquired a 160 year old crystal wedding compote. So far as she knows, that is the oldest piece she has. Since then she has come by a 125 year old cut glass vinegar cruet; a porcelain shaving mug, forget-me-not pattern, which is 75 years old; a "Daisy and Button" pattern cut glass fruit bowl, 50 years old; and cut glass napkin rings and a china mustache cup that are quite old but she is not sure of the exact age.
Enough about antiques and more about the person.
Mrs. Yates was raised in Mayfield, Ky. She was with Army Ordinance in Detroit for 2½ years, from 1941 to 1943. During the year of 1946 she married James Yates and they came to California on their honeymoon. They never went back (except for a visit). They landed in Ventura and while they were waiting for her California State Board of Cosmotology examination to come through, Jeanette taught cosmotology at Ventura School for Girls as an emergency teacher. This school

Mrs. Roy Waite shows her collection and they are planning to stay.
At the present time Mr. Waite is visiting in Chicago and Michigan. His father, who is 95 years old, and his brothers live there. He left a week ago and drove Mrs. Waite said that he had written some wall shelves on the far of the living room. Upon investigation, I found that Mrs. Waite had been keeping her salt and per shaker collection a secret.
She claims that she only got about it in sports and in about years has only collected about one pair. Two pair are made from per and are the size of a chihuahua. One pair is made from 155 mm. shells. Her oldest pair are about 50 years old and made from the elaborately decorated china that was so popular at that time.
Most of her collection has come from the States but she has sold from Germany, Mexico and Alaska.
Well, that about ends it for day. See you next week.

Mrs. Roy Waite of 209 N. Helena was our second and last stop for the week.
Our conversation had not been under way for long before I realized that Mrs. Waite was one of those conscientious people who spend their life doing things for other people.
She is a Past Noble Grand in the Anaheim Rebekah lodge and is a member of the Christian Science church. She herself states "working with and helping people is the most important thing to me."
Mr. Waite is an independent painter, he paints anything "inside or out," and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
They have been married 18 years, 7½ years of that time they have spent in Anaheim. They were both reared in North Dakota, but both of them had been to California previous to their marriage. As soon as they could manage it, they returned. Since they first moved here they have bought several pieces of income property

Corporation and business leaders are showing tangible support of our efforts by their increased contributions, but indications are that average givers are not awake to the needs of the present situation which include the urgent requirements of our fighting men. In view of this year's early Easter season aggressive steps will be needed to keep campaign rolling at high speed until you have achieved maximum possible oversubscription. urge you to intensify campaign tempo and coverage. This is vital if Red Cross is to serve effectively our armed forces at home and abroad. Please see that this message is transmitted directly to your workers. Best wishes for successful results."

The Chinese 28th army corps has pulled back across the Imjin river.
An American spokesman said the Chinese regiment mauled by the Americans Tuesday was part of the 77th Division. He said the division could no longer be regarded as an "effective, organized fighting force." The second Chinese force was not identified.
Although the main U.N. line is within small arms range of 36, only one penetration in force has been reported. On the east coast, Republic of Korea troops occupied the small village of Younpo. U.S. Eighth Army spokesmen said the villagers had no military significance.

Murder Trial Of Costa Mesa Mother Delayed.
Date for the trial of Mrs. Cordella Green, 23, Costa Mesa mother charged with murdering her 4-months-old baby, Patricia Ann, is being delayed, following her plea of not guilty last Friday, while the defense seeks medical witnesses for Mrs. Green.
Public Defender N. D. Meyer requested Judge Kenneth E. Morrison to appoint two psychiatrists to examine Mrs. Green, and when the court demurred, unless Mrs. Green enters a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, Meyer indicated he may ask the county supervisors to appropriate funds for medical witnesses.
Meyer's motion to dismiss the charge on the ground that no probable cause had been shown for holding Mrs. Green for trial, was denied by the court. Meyer argued that the autopsy performed on the child after her death last Feb. 9, did not show that death was caused by the skull fracture and brain hemorrhage inflicted, allegedly, by a beating the previous day.
Lockheed Veep Forecasts Rockets
LOS ANGELES (P)—Passenger rocket planes that will fly from New York to London in an hour at altitudes up to 500,000 feet are forecast by Hall L. Hibbard, vice-president in charge of engineering of Lockheed Aircraft Corp.
Speeds in excess of 10,000 miles an hour will be practical with such craft. Hibbard told a luncheon group yesterday. He did not say when the rocket ships will be placed in operation.
Jet passenger planes capable of maintaining five-hour schedules between Los Angeles and New York already have been designed, he said, and await only the appearance of an interested customer. Their speeds would be around 600 to 700 miles an hour, he added.
