OPINION—I believe the schoolboard acted rashly in "terminating" Supt. M. A. Gauer's contract
after 26 years of faithful service.
He has proven himself a capable
administrator who was just and
honest in his dealings both with
students, parents and teachers.
H. H. Stabbert, John P. Mary, Jr.
and Tom Henry might do well by
reconsidering—or at least make
public their reasons. A good man
cannot be easily replaced. In the
three years of public service, Mel
Gauer could train his successor to
coordinate the myriad details that
go into running a large school system.

MEMOS — H. P. (Horsepower) Holmes, one-time Anaheim elementary school woodshop instructor, has become a man of countless hobbies since he retired. He acquired his nickname in the rip-roaring twenties when he rode a belt-drive motor bike to and from school. Thomas Park Hunter, senior Modus Operandi technician of the California Criminal Identification and Investigation bureau, tagged the shop instructor with that HP rating. James Sparkes was recently granted permission to expand his sand and gravel operations to a pit in the Santa Ana river. Larry Kirchman, the blond blaze who set the Anaheim High half-mile mark, is being hailed as the Colonists' greatest speedster since Al Clayes. Howard Irwin heads the industrial committee of the Associated Chamber of Commerce. He replaced Wilson Phelps who was forced to resign the honor because of illness. With such capable leaders as Dave Collins, Bob Quast and Jim Morris, the Anaheim Y Men's club just can't miss.
ACCOLADE — The Gazelleer wishes to praise Judge L. P. Bonnat for cracking down on drunk drivers. Anyone who drinks shouldn't drive. Those who do should be severely penalized.
PASSING PARADE — Billy Cantrell will make history when he drives his midget racer at Pomona April 1. He won the Phoenix 100-miler last week. Vic Reudy is looking for a capable man to handle the destinies of Anheim's junior Legion baseball team. Joe Huarte is his man, but like Vic, Joe is busy as the proverbial beaver. Joso Correa knows that traffic is really getting rough. A guy can't walk across the street without getting hit anymore. T. N. (Brick) Gaines, one-time Anaheim newspaperman, should-a been a race car driver.
Beudy is looking for a capable man to handle the destinies of Anaheim's junior Legion baseball team. Joe Huarte is his man, but like Vic, Joe is busy as the proverbial beaver... Joso Corres knows that traffic is really getting rough. A guy can't walk across the street without getting hit anymore... T. N. (Brick) Gaines, one-time Anaheim newspaperman, should-a been a race car driver. He used to have a lead foot, but he's mellowed (slowed down), with the years... Bill Gilmore does a lot of driving to look after his oil interests... Bob Strain, incidentally, can recall the reckless days when hoss-and-buggy races between Fullerton and Anaheim were popular.
PEOPLE — T/Sgt. George McGlumphy may be spending a lot of time in a baseball umpire's uniform this spring, but he's still in there pitching as a recruiter. He signed up Earl Newkirk for the airforce... Tony Cano has gone back to work for the naval dry-dock. He's helping to keep the Navy afloat... Chuck King quiff baseball to play softball because Uncle Sam says he must go in June. When y'gotta go, y'gotta go... And they tell me Oscar Seller has the most beautiful sales girl in Anaheim working for J. C. Penny. That must be beautiful Paula Dorsitt.
NITECAPSULE — Folks who have the least to boast about, always seem to do most of the bragging.
"Mach number," the term used to express the speed of jet planes, is derived from Prof. Ernst Mach, who died in Germany 35 years ago.
