The council approved the bill with an admonition to use more care in the future on expense accounts. Seaside Oil Company was low bidder for supplying the city with 8000 gallons of gasoline for its fleet this year with a price of 15.73 cents per gallon in 400 gallon lots. Union Oil Co. bid 17.5 cents. The contract was awarded to Seaside. Bidding was close for electric light bulbs for the city street department. Winner was P.-Moody of Orange County Wholesale Electric Co. His bid offered a straight 30 per cent discount with an additional two per cent discount for cash in ten days. The council accepted a check for $4790 from the Southern Counties Gas Co., representing a franchise charge of two per cent of the company's gross receipts for 1950. The State Division of Highways last night assured the council that a survey of traffic hazards at Center and Olive sts. would be made soon. Petitions for a light signal at this busy intersection have been received by the council and passed along to the state. The city is buying the veterans' housing units at La Palma ave. and N. Olive st. from the state. Last night the council decided to pay off the state and take over full operation of the units. Still owed was $9000. Having accumulated $6000 in rental income from the property, the council appropriated $3000 from the general fund to make up the difference. Preliminary designs for six signs to be posted at strategic points near the city limits were approved. REV. The council authorized E. W. Moeller of the Chamber of Commerce to have Tucker make a small model of his signs and to prepare specifications. Local sign writers will be given an opportunity to bid on the work of executing the signs, Moeller said. Highlights of department monthly reports showed that Judge L. P. Bonnat had a busy February in city court. He heard 404 cases, including 269 parking meter violations, and collected $4270 in fines. Income from parking meters was $1650, the slowest month since the meters were installed. The police department accounted for 67 arrests, 13 of which were drunk drivers. Citations totalled 113 plus 258 parking meter citations. High praise was given the fire department for the current inspection campaign being carried on by Chief Ed Stringer and his men. Five paint stores and 17 cafes were inspected in February and 2400 feet of fire hose tested.
