Tonight will be the 44th anniversary celebration of the founding of the SQR store in Anaheim. Doors of the SQR were first opened for business March 15, 1907 and since that time has grown until it is Anaheim's leading mercantile establishment today and is fourth largest in Orange county. Only Sears, Rankin's and Buffums in Santa Ana surpass it. The story of the SQR is the story of the two men who spent the greater portion of their lives with the store—Oscar H. Renner and A. E. Schumacher. A third man, Wes Quorton, was a partner with Schumacher and Renner at the time the store was founded but he dropped out several years later and left only the initial of his last name to the remaining history of the establishment. Originally, according to Renner, the store was called "Schumacher, Quorton and Renner" department store, but common usage soon shortened that to "SQR," so the partners adopted the new handle and SQR it has been ever since. Two years ago, Schumacher died and his share of the partnership was taken over by his widow, Mrs. M. K. Schumacher, who now lives at 213 N. Helena st. She has taken charge of the store's second floor, the position occupied by her husband. Renner, now 73 years old— "closer to 74"—this year marks his 59th year of mercantile experience. In 1892 he began working in the store which became the SQR when he and his partners purchased it. Reminiscing, he recalled that twice a week he made a trip to a feed and fuel store in the rear of his own store to get five gallons of kerosene to replenish the kerosene lamps which illuminated the SQR. In Anaheim stores then, except for those in two millinery stores," Renner related. "Typewriting machines hadn't come to town as yet and no ready-to-wear items were for sale. Each housewife made her own clothes and household furnishing, including curtains, rugs, table cloths and comforters." In those days," he continued, "five yards of muslin with a seam down the middle sold for 10 cents per yard; shoes were $1.95 and sold for $3.50 and $4. Men's all wool suits were $1.50 and $2.00 on all-day hard, dusty trips by horse and buggy." Working conditions were quite different then, too, according to Renner. He recalled that store hours were 7 a.m., to 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., and the store was open half day on Sundays. Grocers... Happy Birthday...
