Folsom to reports of a $1000 payoff gave a startling turn today to an investigation of the recent wholesale release of convicts. The story was told by a state employee yesterday to a legislative committee which is looking into pardon and parole activities during the closing months of the Folsom administration. It also involved Folsom-appointed Bill Drinkard and Glen Vinson, who dominated the parole board for 15½ months before they went out of office along with Folsom on Jan. 15. More than 1600 paroles and 250 outright pardons were granted during the time the Folsom appointees controlled the board's policy. In many instances prisoners were set free after serving only a small fraction of their sentences. The witness yesterday was W. G. Smith, a worker at the state docks at Mobile. He quoted a reformed desperado, Roy Dickerson of Mobile, as saying $1000 was paid for a pardon for a convicted killer, and that the money was WALDO SHOULD READ THIS.
