For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA CCNY Quits (Continued From Page 2) New York university, the fourth school caught in the scandal. Long Island had announced abandonment of all intercollegiate sports, but later said this stand might be re-examined. In announcing Layne's arrest, Hogan said the CCNY player admitted receiving $2500 in bribes to fix games here against Missouri Dec. 9, Arizona Dec. 28, and Boston College Jan. 11. These are the same games that three other CCNY players — Ed Roman, Ed Warner, and Al Roth — are said to have admitted fixing. Hogan added that Layne also received a total of $500 in "bonuses" for CCNY games with Washington State Dec. 14 and St. John's Jan. 2. No fix was involved in these ties; the official added. Layne was one of the co-captains selected to replace Warner and Roman after the latters' arrest 10 days ago. Hogan quoted Layne as saying after his arrest yesterday: "Well, I was expecting it." Later, the player led detectives to his Bronx home where $2890 was recovered from a window still flower pot. Layne is to be arraigned today. Homemakers Forum (Continued from Page 3) Alpha Beta for singing the praises of the fabulous Hood River d'Anjou variety. Their superb flavor truly makes them the prince of pears. Add them to your apple bowl, use them to solve your salad problem or bake them into a delicious dessert. And last but not least are those sweet Arizona grapefruit. Grapefruit is in the bargain department when it comes to cost and to precious vitamins. They keep well so I buy the eight pound mesh bagful. Into fresh fruit salads they go and who could resist a shimmering mold of lime gelatin chock full of juicy segments of grapefruit, avocado slices and bright red cherries? When company comes halve the grapefruit for a first course that will add decoration to the table. Hollow out each half and notch the edges with a sharp knife. Combine the sections of grapefruit with sliced red apples (skins left on), a d'Anjou pear or two and wedges of pineapple. Arrange the fruit in the grapefruit shells and top each one with fresh mint for contrast. Hope you can cope with the compliments you are sure to receive. Layne was one of the co-captains selected to replace Warner and Romin after the latters arrest 10 days ago. Hogan quoted Layne as saying after his arrest yesterday: "Well, I was expecting it." Later, the player led detectives to his Bronx home where $2890 was recovered from a window-sill flower pot. Layne is to be arraigned today. The recovery of Layne's money brought to $26,390 the total amount of bribe cash turned over to the district attorney by most of the players. All this cash allegedly came from Salvatore Turtio Sollazzo, gambler, jeweler and ex-convict. In addition to charges that he bribed nine of the players, he is under various federal investigations of his income tax returns and a possible link to a gold smuggling ring. Besides the four CCNY players, Sollazzo allegedly made deals with four present and past LIU players and one from NYU. Of these LIU players, Edward Gard, has been named as the pay-off man to a fifth former LIU player, Natie Miller. However, Hogan indicated yesterday that another gambler, and not Sollazzo, was behind the cash that came to Miller in 1948. In most cases, the players were not paid to lose a game, but merely to keep their team's winning margin within the proper point spread; required for their "financier" to win his bets. KOREAN WAR Continued from Page 1 but presumably withdrew Wednesday night. Chinese prisoners captured in various sectors of the front reported plans for a major offensive next month by the 33 divisions of the red Chinese Third Field army —300,00 men—backed by 1000 hitherto concealed planes. AP correspondent Stan Swinton said the prisoners reported the Chinese would be joined by new red Korean divisions now training in Manchuria. "Allied frontline intelligence officers give high credence to the possibility of a communist spring counter-offensive," Swinton added. Skid Only Hurts Officer's Dignity LONG BEACH UF—Policeman John D. Emmons must carry a lucky rabbit's foot. He was thrown from a patrol car after a collision. He skidded along the pavement on his back for 80 feet. His cartridge belt took most of the brunt. Leather cartridge loops were ground to pieces. Brass on the cartridges was ground down. Two cartridges fell apart. Yet none exploded and Emmons suffered only bruises and cuts. Seepage sometimes causes the loss of as much as one third of the water entering an irrigation canal.
