Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER A good name is better than precious ointment.—Ecc. 7:1. TODAY—Robert Rossberg will tell you that on February 28, 1885 The American Telephone and Telegraph co. was organized. He'll also tell you that Anaheimers use their telephone. At least 30,000 calls are made through the local exchange daily, but Rossberg, who lives in Yorba Linda, doesn't get the kind of service he give—'y'see he's on a 10-party line himself. NEWSQUIZ—Of the 12 traffic fatalities in Orange county this year, how many were pedestrians? Six—Mrs. Verdie Ellis, 72; Mrs. Mackle Sutherland, 79; Jennie Bobne, 67; Albert Morrison, 68; and Nick Demarakis, 60, and Rona R. Kittenhouse, 57. Who was the youngest traffic victim? Sammy Juarez, 4, who fell out of his father's car. How many war deaths were reported during the time these people were killed on the highways? Four were killed in action while 11 died from traffic accidents. How many people were injured? No one knows. In the two-month period, 36 people received serious injuries. Twice that many received minor hurts. Gilbert U. Kraemer, prominent Placentian, and an Anaheim quarriers announced the figure day. It explained that from who pass the physicals will the 4990 inductees California deliver as its quota to the Inyo-Alpine-Mono 26, Kerri at Mr. Mak 14,935 to Get March Greetings SACRAMENTO (Ft.)—The mailman will soon be delivering notices ordering 14,935 California young men to report for draft physical examination in March. State Selective Service headquartered the figure day. It explained that from who pass the physicals will the 4990 inductees California deliver as its quota to the Inyo-Alpine-Mono 26, Kerri MUSING—Wonder why it is so many Marines are involved in traffic accidents? More gyrenes, it seems, get crippled in traffic smashups than are injured in combat. There must be an answer. STATISTICS—There are 4,976-296 motor vehicles registered in the State of California—113,989 belong to you, your friends and neighbors here in Orange county. Orange county has 93,106 automobiles, 9950 trucks and 1527 motorcycles. That's an awful lot of rolling stock when you consider that there 214,061 people in the county (1950 census figure). That adds up to a lot of traffic. The more cars, the higher the accident frequency. So, be careful — take care of yourself and watch out out for the other fellow, too. PREDICTION — Last year 89 people lost their lives in county highway fatalities. This year more than 100 people may die uselessly. Be careful, lest you be one of those 100. HISTORICAL — Prior to 1857 there were two main roads through this part of the country actually, they were little more than wagon trails made by the stagecoach drivers as they took off across the plains on their way to San Juan and San Diego. The population of Northern Orange county could be enumerated on the fingers of the census taker's hands. There was Peter Uribe, Juan Pacifico Ontiveras, August Langenberger and the Bernardo Kotber. In less than through this part of the country ... actually, they were little more than wagon trails made by the stagecoach drivers as they took off across the plains on their way to San Juan and San Diego. ... The population of Northern Orange county could be enumerated on the fingers of the census taker's hands. ... There was Peter Uribe, Juan Pacifico Ontiveras, August Langenberger and the Bernardo Yurban. In less than 100 years, a civilization has come to the once barren mustard patch. The dusty, dirt trails have been replaced by broad ribbons of black asphalt and gas buggies have menaced life and limb. PEOPLE — Gerald Munoz, the section foreman, found a two-tailed lizard. The first he's ever seen in his long experience. Just when little Jimmy Heffron was getting ready to see the sights of Gay Parée, Maj. Gen. Huddleston gets order that Anaheim's "own" and the 40th will be sent to Japan. Maybe Ray (Gordo) Lamas will get to brush up a little more on his judo tactics. Army life hasn't changed since Merrill Royer used to put out the daily scuttlebut bulletin 1918. Rumors still are a standard army commodity. Grover Walters remembers some of those French villages he visited during his hiteh in the service. The thing that impressed him most was the municipal water well instead of the municipal water system. Papa Ed Mene will tell you that a Frenchman will stable his stock in his house, too. NITECAP — It's healthy to breathe through your nose — besides, it keeps your mouth shut. sarters announced the figure tony. It explained that from those no pass the physicals will come 4900 inductees California must deliver as its quota to the Army April. The men must appear for the physicals at one of the state's four duction stations on designated days throughout March—excludSaturdays and Sundays. Here are the county quotas for Los Angeles induction station: Nyro-Alpine-Mono 26, Kern 449, Los Angeles 4584, Orange 258, Riverside 150, San Bernardino 234, San Luis Obispo 15, Santa Barbara 96, Ventura 330. BOARD MEETING The Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold an open board meeting tomorrow night in the Chamber of Commerce office, 136 N. Los Angeles st., at 8 o'clock. All members of the Junior Chamber were invited to attend the meeting. School Attendance In LA Lowered LOS ANGELES (CD) — Virus infection is daily causing the absence of about 25 percent of the 400,000 pupils in Los Angeles city schools, estimates Assistant Superintendent Harry Howell. No general closing of schools is contemplated, Howell added, saying children generally recover after 48 hours. Crime Probers Continued from Page 1 Italy, the committee said, he "maintains associations with both groups through his former racketeer affiliates." Luciano for years was the vice and narcotics overlord of New York City. In the early 1930's he was convicted of forced prostitution and sentenced to a prison sentence of 80 to 50 years, largely through the efforts of the racket busting Thomas E. Dewey. After Dewey became Governor of New York, he commuted Luciano's sentence when the Sicilian native had served nearly 10 years. Dewey cited aid he said Luciano gave to the U.S. Army preparatory to the World War Two invasion of Italy; Luciano was quickly deported.
