Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Three-Man Evangelistic Team To Continue Meeting in Anaheim Wakefield Turns: To Play for $1 OAKLAND (UP)—Oakland Oaks Owner Clarence L. (Brick) Laws is elated over outfielder Dick Wakefield's change of heart—"I'll play baseball this year for nothing, just for the fun of it." The boss exclaimed today: "By golly, I'll charter a private plane as soon as possible and go to Florida to pick him up before he gets a chance to change his mind." In Lakeland, Fla., yesterday. Wakefield said he would accept Laws' offer of $1 plus expenses for the Pacific Coast League season, but couldn't get a reservation to fly here for spring training. Earlier, Wakefield had screamed loudly when informed of the $1 offer. Laws tempered that by explaining expenses could tote up to the $17,000-Dick received with Oakland last year, if Dick has a good season. Wakefield, a $52,000 Detroit Tiger bonus baby 10 years ago, but a flop in the American League; said playing baseball, not earning money, is his big aim at the moment. Laws lauded: "Wakefield's decision proves he's even a bigger man than I" SPORTY—Perfect match-mates are the short, bat-wing drums modeled by Anita Robertson. Gen. Ennis Whitehead, air defense commander, told Senators today a long range striking Air Force should be given top priority on building defenses for this country. Second priority, he said, should go to a defensive Air Force capable of (A) preventing American long range bombers from being destroyed at their bases and (B) protecting the industrial might of the nation. Whitehead gave his view to a joint Senate group considering the troops-to-Europe issue. He appeared as the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees prepared to wind up military testimony on the controversy. The groups plan to call top Republican leaders pext for testimony that may have repercussions in the 1952 presidential campaign. Whitehead declined to be drawn out on whether or not troops should be sent to Europe under the North Atlantic pact. The Joint Chiefs of Staff have recommended sending four divisions in addition to the two already there. Whitehead said he has confidence in the judgment of the Joint Chiefs, but was not familiar in detail with their recommendations. If you drink! Don't drive. Chairman Wood (D-Ga) was not available for immediate comment, but only last Friday told news men that further hearings on communism in Hollywood were "inevitable." Committee sources told reporters the investigators were armed with subpeonas and instructions to determine what basis, if any, exists for hearings. Some members of the committee Rep. Kearney (R-NY) said he further testimony in connection with movie actor Edward G. Robinson. Robinson, movie tough guy, at his own request made two voluntary appearances before the committee last fall to denounce public allegations linking him with communist front activities. Rep. Kearney (R-NY) aid he had two witnesses he wanted to call in connection with Robinson's testimony. A previous committee investigation of communist influences in the movie capital resulted in contempt citations and eventual sentences for the group of producers and writers known as the "Hollywood Ten." They had refused to answer committee questions.
